Vettel was wrong - Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says he will hold discussions with Sebastian Vettel behind closed doors after admitting his driver chose to ignore a direct team order at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Vettel won the race in Sepang but only after he took the lead from team-mate Mark Webber after both drivers had been told to hold position. Horner said he felt his driver had deliberately ignored a team order and that Vettel knew what he did was wrong.
"He'd had the communication and knew what it was and he chose to ignore it," Horner said. "He put his interest beyond what the team's position was and he was focused on those eight points difference between second and first.
"That was wrong, he has accepted it was wrong, and from a team's perspective Formula One is a team sport. But there is also a drivers' championship and that's where sometimes you end up being in conflict, and I believe exactly the same conflict was going on with the two cars [Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg] just behind us.
"It's important that we learn from it and I think that Sebastian acknowledges and knows what he did wasn't right. But these situations have happened previously, and no doubt they will happen again in the future."
Asked if he would be disciplining his driver further, Horner added: "It's the type of thing we will talk about behind closed doors. He and I have had the discussion already, once we've taken the emotion out of it with time to reflect we'll have another discussion before the next race."
Vettel made the pass on lap 46 and Horner was asked whether he considered radioing his driver to tell him to give the position back.

"Do you honestly think that if we'd told him to slow down and give the place back, he would have given it back?" Horner said. "There was no point, there was no point. He made it quite clear what his intention was by making the move."
Webber and Vettel have a long history of conflicts, going back to the 2010 Turkish Grand Prix where a similar battle ended in contact. After the race in Malaysia it appeared as though the pair's relationship had hit another low, but Horner said it was nothing new.
"Let's be honest here, there's never been much trust between them since Istanbul 2010, but there is a respect between the two of them," he said. "If you think of Brazil at the last race [of 2012], Mark was told to hold position and he started racing him.

"These things happen, they are race drivers and they will push to the limit. That's part of their DNA and that's part of why we signed them to do the job they do and why they have performed so well for us as a pairing for the last five years."
Explaining the reason why team orders had been imposed in the first place, Horner said the high levels of tyre degradation meant the pit wall was trying to do the best it could to secure maximum points.
"Following cars very closely destroys tyres and what we didn't want to do was run out of tyres and take an unnecessary risk. So from a team's point of view we are trying to manage the race from that final stop to the end of the race because at this point of the season it made sense to try and bank the points. All you are doing by allowing the two to race, from a team's perspective, is take unnecessary risk. Obviously Sebastian chose that he wanted those eight points and chose to take things into his own hands. He's apologised to team for that and to Mark for that."

Webber ponders Red Bull future

Mark Webber admits he will consider his future with Red Bull in the wake of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Sebastian Vettel's decision to ignore team orders and overtake Webber to win the race in Sepang left Webber fuming and claiming on the podium that Vettel "will have protection as usual" from the Red Bull hierarchy. Later, Webber was asked if the developments will make him consider his future with the team and maybe even in Formula One, to which Webber responded: "My mind, in the last 15 laps was thinking that many things, yes. Many, many things."

Expanding further, Webber said his anger wasn't solely based on the actions of Vettel in Malaysia.

"Let's just say there were a lot of things going through my mind in the last 15 laps of the Grand Prix, lots of different reasons, not just from [the race] but also from the past. We'll see what happens. We've got three weeks before the next race."

Webber added that he will spend some time between races in Australia to contemplate his future.

"I think it's very early days right now, it's very raw, obviously, and we need to work out how the team goes best forwards from here. That's obviously going to be discussed this week. I will be in Australia on my surfboard, the phone won't be engaged, see what happens."

Webber won't quit - Horner

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes Mark Webber will not quit the team over Sebastian Vettel's actions in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Following Vettel's decision to ignore team orders and overtake Webber to win the race, Webber said he would return to Australia over the next few weeks to consider his future. Horner, however, believes that Webber's comments were made in the heat of the moment and that he has reassured his driver that it was not the team's decision for Vettel to win the race.

"The team's position was clear," Horner said. "Mark knows the team didn't manipulate anything, there was no conspiracy, so why he needs to be thinking about his future is just pure emotion."

Horner also said that Vettel apologised to Webber once again in the team's post-race debrief, and that thoughts within the team then turned to preparing for China.

"We've conducted a de-brief and I've spoken to both drivers. Sebastian has apologised to both Mark and the team. We've conducted our de-brief as we normally do and now we focus on the next race."

Webber's father, Alan, told the Australian Broadcast Corporation that Webber won't be leaving the team ahead of the next race, saying: "We'll be up in China for the next one."

AUSTRALIAN F1 driver Mark Webber has reportedly signed a new five-year contract to lead Porsche in their return to famous 24 hour endurance race Le Mans.

Overnight Radio Le Mans announced that Mark Webber had put pen to paper making the deal official, meaning he would join Porsche in their assault on the World Endurance Championship.

Webber is expected to quit F1 at the end of the season, when his contract with Red Bull expires.

Rumours of a move to Porsche have been simmering for some time, and the car giant last week did not deny an interest in hiring Webber for their new Le Mans sportscar program.

Rumours of a move to Porsche ramped up following the controversial Malaysian Grand Prix.

German publication Bild reported that the Webber was is in talks with Porsche in the wake of Sebastian Vettel's ignorance of team orders by denying Webber victory at Sepang.

Webber was quick to deny any rumours before the start of this year's F1 season, but is yet to make comment on the latest announcement.

Porsche's new LMP1-class car will hit the test track later this year.
