Fairuzizuan may pay for losing cool

PETALING JAYA: National doubles shuttler Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari can expect to be penalised albeit lightly for losing his cool during the Thomas Cup Finals at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil last month.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) disciplinary board had hauled up Fairuzizuan for questioning and they had come up with a recommendation on what action should be taken against him.

And whether the recommendation will be approved or not is in the hands of the BAM exco led by the association’s president, Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh.

The BAM’s new secretary, Ng Chin Chai, said yesterday that the disciplinary board who met on Friday were satified with their findings.

National doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky had referred Fairuzizuan to the board for his reaction to a vulgar sign and profanity directed at the defeat in the second doubles match in the group tie against Japan in which he partnered Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif.

Malaysia went on to lose the tie 2-3.

“At the board hearing, Fairuzizuan regretted his action and made an apology. He promised that there would be no such behaviour from him again,” said Chin Chai.

“We have taken into consideration that it was the first time that he had lost control of his emotions. We have forwarded our recommendation to the exco and it is for them to make a final decision,” he added.

For the record, Fairuzizuan-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif were not fielded for the Singapore and Indonesia Opens pending the outcome of the investigation by the disciplinary board.

Indonesians pose big threat at Malaysian Open GP Gold

PETALING JAYA: Indonesia’s old and young hands are set to be the stumbling blocks for Lee Chong Wei and the men’s pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in chalking up a second consecutive double for Malaysia in the Malaysian Open Grand Prix Gold championships in Johor Baru from July 6-11.

From the draw released on Tuesday, Chong Wei is tipped to play against second seed Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in the final.

But there is one young Indonesian who can make life difficult for Chong Wei in the form of eighth seed Andre Kurniawan Tedjono. Also in the same half are Denmark’s back-up shuttler Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Thai veteran Boonsak Ponsana.

In the other half, Malaysia will bank on several back-up players – Tan Chun Seang, Chan Kwong Beng, Misbun Ramdan Misbun, Zulfadli Zulkifli and recently crowned Sukma (Malaysia Games) champion Mohd Arif Abdul Latif.

Besides Taufik, the others in the half are Hong Kong’s Hu Yun, Malaysian veteran Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.

In the men’s doubles, top seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong have in their half of the draw Indonesians Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan, who are seeded third, and newcomers Tri Kusuma Wardana-Komang Sandy Wijaya. The other pairs in the fray are the formidable Japanese Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato and two seeded Malaysian combinations – Tan Bin Shen-Gan Teik Chai (6th) and Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah (7th).

The second seeds are top Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and the Malaysian pairs in their half are Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng.

In the absence of top players from China, South Korea and Denmark, Malaysia will bank on Wong Mew Choo and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty for honours.
