Sports-Medical Korean Drama 'Dr. Champ'
Posted by ahswara

The upcoming sports-medical Korean drama ‘Dr. Champ’ starring Kim So Yeon, Uhm Tae Woong, and Jung Kyeo Woon, has gradually released its stills. The first stills were Jung’s scenes when he trains in his judo champ. Then, there were Kim and Jung’s scenes taken when Jung’s character saves his doctor played by Kim from being injured in a hit and run. The latest stills released were Shin Dong Hee’s when he is in the middle of judo training.

The drama focuses the story at the Olympic training facility, Taerung National Village. The friendship, love and rivalry will make the story more complicated. Unfortunately, the real Taerung has denied the crew’s request to shoot at their site because they are busy preparing for the upcoming Asia Games in Guangzhou, China. Taerung’s side is afraid that the shooting would probably disrupt the athletes’ training and they couldn’t accommodate the filming crew. Therefore, the filming moves to Yongin University, which is called the “judo mecca”.

Besides Kim, Uhm, Jung, and Shin, the drama also stars including Cha Ye Ryun as a swim coach, Kang So Ra as a swimmer, Jung Seok Won as judo player, Song Ji Eun as Jung’s friend.

‘Dr. Champ’ premieres on September 27 on SBS, following ‘I am Legend’.

[REVIEW] SBS TV series "Doctor Champ" - 1st Episode
Reporter: Kim Sun-young (TV Critic) Editor: Jessica Kim jesskim@ <ⓒ10Asia All rights reserved> 10Asia

The first episode was light and refreshing. The main reason for this was that the drama was effective in its method of slowly establishing its characters by telling of their everyday life to reveal what they are like on the inside, instead of being obsessed about beating rival dramas through hasty development of various incidents and conflicts.

The rigid and cool-headed doctor Yeon-woo (played by Kim So-yeon) does not live an easy life because of her immature family and her complex that she is "a woman and did not graduate Korea University [name of top college in the drama]," while the aggressive go-getter Ji-heon (played by Jung Gyu-woon) is battered emotionally from continued misfortune from constantly being No. 2 and being pained by his family.

The beginning of "Doctor Champ," which focuses on how the two meet and what their stories are by having them witness each other's pain on their first encounter rather than using the cliche of romantic dramas where the two become involved in a misunderstanding and start to bicker, faithfully laid a ground solid for the theme of 'healing' of medical dramas.

The scenes, said to have been shot with DSLR camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II, delivers that story with warm colors which neutralize the cold ambience medical dramas usually give off and sets the tone closer to that of a human drama. And Uhm Tae-woong, who had responded playfully to people's pointing out that his character Do-wook has been imitated from U.S. drama "House" because of the single scene where he eats chewable vitamins instead of Vicodin, also made the series worthy of looking forward to by displaying how seasoned he is by nonchalantly responding to the prejudice through a short scene in the car.

What was impressive of the purpose of creating the series was the words it is 'a story not about the successful but the ones who do not give up.' Just like it declared, the first episode of "Doctor Champ" presents the viewer with the premonition that the characters, who each carry a deficiency, will heal and mature through their relationships during an era where stories of one's life turning around and success are the general trend.

Brisk start for Dr. Champ, Sungkyunkwan hits 10%
by javabeans Via OSEN, OSEN l dramabeans.com

Medical-sports drama Dr. Champ premiered this week, replacing I Am Legend in the Monday-Tuesday SBS lineup, and has gotten off to a promising start with solid ratings and general praise from viewers. Episode 1 brought in a 12.4%, and Episode 2 followed that with a 12%.

For comparison purposes, I Am Legend (which got off to a solid start but began faltering in the latter half) ended on an 8.9%, so this is hopeful news for Dr. Champ. It stars Kim So-yeon and Uhm Tae-woong as doctors at Taereung, the Olympic training facility, while Jung Kyeo-woon and Cha Ye-ryun join the romantic mix as a judo player and a swimming coach, respectively.

Spring training takes Dr. Champ to the beach

The drama has been getting ratings in the 10% range, which is in the middling range. It does lack the adultery-revenge-makjang formula that tends to shoot dramas to ratings highs (see: Baker King Kim Tak-gu), but I’m enjoying the refreshing pace — and the awesome cinematography.

SuJu’s Shindong, face size humiliated beside Kim Soyeon “Impact of Perspective?”

[Reported by Park Youngjoo, Newsen] Actress Kim Soyeon has proudly showed off her superior face size.

On the 2nd of October, Shindong wrote on his Twitter account that “One shot with Soyeon noona!! Doctor Champ hwaiting!!” and attached a photo with it.

In the photo, Shindong and Kim Soyeon were both smiling while wearing the Taekwondo uniform. A healthy-looking Shindong was seen with Kim Soyeon, who unlike him, boasted a slim figure. In addition, Shindong also tasted humiliation because his face was twice as large as compared to that of Kim Soyeon’s.

Netizens who saw the photo left reactions such as “effect of perspective?”, “Isn’t Kim Soyeon’s face small?” and “Do the drama well”.

On another hand, in the new SBS Monday/Tuesday drama ‘Doctor Champ’ (screenplay by Noh Jiseol/Directed by Park Hyunggi) which was first broadcasted on the 27th of September, Shindong played the national Judo athlete Kang Wooram, appearing alongside the friendly Kim Soyeon.
