Heidfeld and Renault officially split
Nick Heidfeld and Lotus Renault GP have officially split ahead of this season’s final seven races, with both parties agreeing an ‘amicable settlement’ on Friday afternoon. The German was due to take legal action after Bruno Senna replaced him in Belgium last weekend, but has now decided to move on and focus on his future.
"Obviously I’m disappointed to be leaving Lotus Renault GP in the middle of the season," Heidfeld explained. "I thought I could still make a big contribution to the team, but I have to see things as they are and I want to turn my attention to the future.
"We have taken the right decision by choosing to end our collaboration today. I would like to wish all the friends I made at Enstone a successful end to the season. One thing is for sure - I’ll be back racing at the highest level soon."
Renault Team Principal Eric Boullier added that he is extremely grateful for Heidfeld's services in 2011, describing his contribution as ‘highly valuable’.
"Our disagreement with Nick has been the subject of much media coverage lately, and we are pleased to have reached a swift and reasonable solution," he said. "Our separation process was already a painful one, and neither of us wanted to go through another legal hearing.
"We’re very grateful to Nick for the highly valuable contribution he’s made to the team. We certainly had good times together, in particular remembering our podium finish in Malaysia. He is a very strong and determined racer and we wish him every success in the future."
Heidfeld signed with Renault in February to replace the injured Robert Kubica, joining Vitaly Petrov who is contesting his second Formula 1 season. However, despite a podium finish at Sepang, the 34-year-old failed to cement his place in the squad. |

Raikkonen and Grojsean to do Lotus demo run in Las Vegas
he Lotus F1 team is planning to hold a demonstration run with their Formula 1 cars in the streets of Las Vegas on February 18 and 19, 2012. The team’s new drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grojsean will participate in the demonstration run, which will be held between the first and second winter testing sessions in Jerez and Barcelona.
The Lotus demonstration run is part of a three day event called “F1 comes to Vegas”, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada from February 17-19. The event will also feature a Lotus car show which will showcase the entire range of Lotus sports cars, including the Lotus Evora GT4 and the Lotus T125 Exos.
The event also promises to include one-on-one interviews with the Lotus drivers, press conferences, autograph sessions, as well as passenger rides for VIP guests in a three-seater Lotus F1 car that has been specially adapted to take two passengers.
The Lotus event is intended to be part of a marketing strategy by the team to attract potential sponsors in the United States. Formula 1 will returning to the United States in 2012 to Austin, followed by the New York Grand Prix in 2013. Bernie Ecclestone has also said in the past that there should be ‘three or four’ races in the United States in the future. |

Lotus to unveil new car on 5 February
Lotus Renault GP, known as ‘Lotus’ for the 2012 F1 season, has confirmed that it will uncover its new car on Sunday 5 February. The second black and gold contender to be raced by the team, this year’s machine features an innovative active ride height system and will be raced by Romain Grosjean plus 2007 Champion Kimi Räikkönen.
With the squad formerly known as ‘Renault’ having been bought out by Group Lotus (owned by Proton, which in turn is owned by the Malaysian government) the outfit remains based in Enstone, England. Its launch will take place through the team’s new-look website, starting at 4pm GMT on Sunday 5 February. An event relating to the launch will also be held in Jerez on Monday 6 February, prior to the start of pre-season testing 24 hours later.
On the Monday, a press conference will be held with both race drivers, Team Principal Eric Boullier and Technical Director James Allison. As the team will rent out the Jerez circuit, Räikkönen will perform several demonstration laps for the media in the afternoon. |
