MIRI (Oct 26): Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) should prioritise communication and understanding with the local residents instead of forcibly erecting 5G telecommunication towers, said Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak leader Peter Hee.

He stressed that explaining the necessity of such towers and listening to the local community is important to avoid misunderstandings and disputes.

“It should not be a case where every time there is a telecommunication tower erected, a YB (elected representative) is called to the scene,” he said.

Hee made these remarks after meeting a group of residents at Jalan Sim Kheng Hong in Bakam, Miri, who are protesting against the proposed erection of a 5G tower there.

He said while it is understandable that more towers are installed to facilitate 5G connectivity, it is essential for the government to be considerate of the legitimate concerns raised by the residents.

“SMA should make it a priority to find an appropriate location further away if there are legitimate concerns raised by the public,” he said.

By engaging in open dialogue and finding mutually acceptable solutions, SMA can ensure that community development aligns with the well-being and interests of the residents, he pointed out.

Earlier on, complainant Ling Siuk Chea said she had registered her protest with the relevant authorities due to concerns of road safety and potential adverse health effects of the 5G telecommunication tower which would be erected in front of her house.

5G towers are telecommunications sites capable of transmitting 5G ‘New Radio’ signals for wide-area coverage. They are typically 50 to 200 feet tall and designed to blend into the natural environment.

Ling claimed that no notice of the plan for a tower was given to the over 100 residents of the area, who were caught by surprise.

“The tower could be as tall as 200 feet, and my house is less than 200 feet away and located at a cross-road exit junction,” she said.

She has also written an appeal letter to SMA calling for the tower to be located elsewhere and contacted local elected representatives for help.
