Patrice puts pen to paper

Patrice Evra has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Old Trafford until at least the end of the 2013/14 season.

The 29-year-old left-back joined the Reds in January 2006 and has made 226 appearances, scoring three goals. He has won three Premier League titles, three League Cups including one as captain in 2010 and winners' medals in both the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

“Ever since I arrived at United, it’s been a dream come true playing here,” Evra told ManUtd.com. “The fans, the players, the manager and the staff all work hard to make this club the best in the world.

“I’ve won a lot in the last five years, but I want to win more and I know that’s the mentality of everyone here.”

The deal secures the services of a player Sir Alex Ferguson describes as “unquestionably one of the world’s best left backs”.

The boss added: “Patrice has developed into a key character in the dressing room. It’s great that he’s committed himself to Manchester United. His experience and talent will be increasingly important to us.”

It’s agony for Anderson

MANCHESTER UNITED'S treble charge has been dealt a huge blow with the news that Anderson faces up to two months out.

The Brazilian midfielder took a knock to the knee in Saturday's clash with Crawley and scans have revealed cartilage damage.

Yesterday Anderson left the Carrington training ground on crutches.

United are still hopeful he could avoid surgery but have resigned themselves to being without the 22-year-old until mid-April.

And that will come as a huge blow as United are short in midfield with Antonio Valencia, Owen Hargreaves and Ji-Sung Park all still crocked.

But there was some good news as Patrice Evra penned a new 3½-year deal at Old Trafford.

SunSport told you first back on October 26 that the full-back was ready to commit his long-term future to the Red Devils.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona were eyeing a swoop.

But Evra, 29, has ended any doubts by agreeing a £90,000-a-week contract which keeps him at United until 2014.

Evra said: "I've won a lot in the last five years, but I want to win more and I know that's the mentality of everyone here."

Manager Alex Ferguson added: "His experience and talent will be increasingly important to us."

Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov are also close to extending deals.

Injed plak dah negro neh.

Seven miss Marseille trip

United return to Champions League action on Wednesday night without a number of experienced players.

Ryan Giggs and Anderson joined Jonny Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Owen, Ji-sung Park and long-term absentee Antonio Valencia in missing the flight to France. Further details are likely when Sir Alex Ferguson holds his pre-match press conference in Marseille later this afternoon (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, new goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard is travelling into Europe for the first time with United, although Edwin van der Sar is expected to reclaim his place in the side after being rested from Saturday's FA Cup win over Crawley Town.

The 22-man party also includes two teenagers in Norwegian striker Joshua King and Bury-born midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe. The young pair were in knock-out action last week, helping the Reds to reach the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals, and were registered with Premier League squad numbers on Friday.

The Reds' squad to take on Olympique Marseille is as follows:

Goalkeepers: van der Sar, Kuszczak, Lindegaard
Defenders: Vidic, O'Shea, Brown, Rafael, Fabio, Evra, Smalling
Midfielders: Scholes, Gibson, Nani, Carrick, Fletcher, Bebe, Obertan, Tunnicliffe
Strikers: Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, King.

p/s: aduh x boleh blah bebe & obertan nie ada dalam list rase cam x layak jer.. plis ler improve cepat2 @ bagi loan terus nyampah tgk bajet emcem jer.. hahaha..

Five ways Manchester United can beat Marseille

Ferguson's side have the resources to secure a first-leg lead    By Chris Davie    22 Feb 2011 13:58:00

  1. Lasso Lucho Gonzalez

The Argentine playmaker has come into form after getting caught up in Marseille’s languid start to their domestic season.

Luchonetted at the weekend against St Etienne and has been heavily involvedin the majority of Marseille’s build-up play this term.

Playingin a midfield accompanied by Benoit Cheyrou and the anchor of EdouardCisse, Lucho is given licence to roam along Marseille’s right, whichcould force Patrice Evra to drift inside, in turn creating space forRod Fanni to push forward from full-back.

Manchester United willneed to be aware of Lucho’s movement and Darren Fletcher, who is likelyto play deep, will need to pick up the midfielder’s runs and preventhim from linking up with Loic Remy and Brandao.

2. Keep alert when defending dead-ball situations

ManchesterUnited’s defensive flaw this term has come from set-pieces. Recentlyagainst Blackpool, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side showed an alarminginability to deal with high balls flicked on in the box and both goalsIan Holloway’s men scored at Bloomfield Road came from a Charlie Adamcorner.

Mick McCarthy’s side also used a combination of graftand resilience, along with a quick corner, to end United’s29-league-game unbeaten run earlier this month.

Thetried-and-tested combination of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand willprovide reassurance for United fans, but since the latter is a doubt,Chris Smalling could be the man to deputise. The 21-year-oldcomfortably dealt with Carlos Tevez in the Manchester derby just over aweek ago, and Ferguson could be tempted to draft in the centre-back inorder to quell the threat of Souleymane Diawara from corners.

Tight marking | United must improve their defending from set-pieces

3. Involve Nani as much as possible

Needlessto say, the Portuguese winger has been something of a talisman forUnited this term. Although the tendency to frustrate still surfaces onoccasions, generally his crossing and attacking mentality has causedproblems for numerous defenders since September.

His marker islikely to be either Gabriel Heinze or Taye Taiwo, both of whom like toventure forward, so Nani should have the opportunity to exploit thespace left behind by the full-back.

4. Expose Marseille’s lack of speed in defence

Diawara,Stephane Mbia and Heinze are Marseille’s three regular centre-backs butthey offer little pace regardless of the combination chosen by managerDidier Deschamps.

As already highlighted, Nani has theopportunity to use his guile to full effect on the wing but perhapsFerguson may spring a surprise and opt to hand Javier Hernandez a moresignificant role than anticipated.

The Mexican has displayed hisability in playing off the shoulder of the centre-back and shouldMarseille decide to play a high line with their slow defence, theforward can easily exploit the space left behind with his acceleration.

Speed is the key | Marseille's weakness is a stagnant defence – is Nani the man for the job?

5. Keep the faith in Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov

A4-3-3 has the potential to ooze negativity, particularly away from homein the Champions League. The wide-men often tuck back to form afive-man midfield, which in turn isolates the striker.

An awaygoal is vital in Europe and playing Rooney and Berbatov should causeMarseille problems. Ferguson has shown a reluctance to pin his side’shopes solely on the Bulgarian this term but after coming on as asubstitute against Manchester City, he showed he is able to bring acalmness to United’s play and his strength will be craved, particularlyagainst the bullish Diawara.

Should Ferguson opt to play bothBerbatov and Rooney, the latter is likely to operate on the wing and,if given encouragement, will move inside to form a front two. TheEngland man frequently drifts deep to receive the ball when hespearheads an attack but this causes United to lose their focal point.

WithBerbatov leading the line, Ferguson’s men constantly have an outlet aswell as having Rooney who is given licence to roam without harmingtheir attacking threat.

Valencia set for United return

Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia could make his return from injury in their FA Cup quarter-final.

United will host the winner of the Arsenal-Leyton Orient replay, with their Premier League title rivals expected to progress at home to League One Orient.

The Ecuador international has been sidelined since suffering a badly broken ankle in United's UEFA Champions League game with Rangers in September.

But the 25-year-old returned to training last week and Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that the cup game on March 12 has been pencilled in for Valencia's comeback.

"Antonio is training very well now," said the United boss.
Contact

"He is involved on the contact side and the signs are very encouraging. We expect him to be ready by the Arsenal cup tie."

Valencia was one of seven senior players missing as United flew out of Manchester for Wednesday night's Champions League game in Marseille.

United laboured to a 1-0 win over non-league Crawley in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday but Ferguson is confident many of his injury absentees will recover in time for the second leg with Marseille in three weeks' time.

"Anderson got injured in the first half on Saturday," Ferguson added.

Specialist

"We have sent him to Portugal to see a specialist he has dealt with over there. That will be two weeks - three at the most.

"Ryan Giggs should be okay for the Wigan game on Saturday, while Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans should be back for the Chelsea game next week.

"We have missed Park Ji-sung because he has been such a good player for us, but he should be back in two or three weeks."
