KUALA LUMPUR - Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir has ordered all programmes and activities scheduled to be attended by a foreign lecturer believed to be pro-Zionists at Universiti Malaya (UM) to be cancelled immediately.

He said the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) viewed seriously the actions of the lecturer, whose statement has sparked controversy and disrespected the sentiments of the community.

The university has also been asked to investigate the matter and report further details as soon as possible.

"I would like to remind every agency and institution under MOHE to be alert and conduct thorough background checks before inviting anyone to events or programmes organised.

"Every decision made must take into account sensitivities, and align with the government’s policies and stance,” he said in a statement here.

Zambry said that although higher education institutions are given autonomy to decide on intellectual programmes, it does not mean they have the complete freedom to disregard the sensitivity of Malaysia’s majority.

"If someone’s scholarship is clouded with various controversies and questionable academic values, why should they be brought in as a scholarly visitor? There needs to be a fair assessment before making a decision,” he said in a post on X today.

The presence of Bruce Gilley at a programme in UM went viral on X yesterday after it was uploaded by the political science professor himself.

However, it received a backlash from Malaysians before the post was deleted by Gilley, who also informed that he had departed from Malaysia today. - BERNAMA

  PETALING JAYA: All programmes and activities scheduled to involve US academician Bruce Gilley have been ordered to be cancelled by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
  

Universiti Malaya (UM), which had a talk by Gilley on Tuesday (April 25), was also ordered to investigate and report on the details to the ministry.

In a statement by the ministry, it said it took note and takes the issue involving a foreign speaker issuing statements that are seen to provoke controversy and disrespect sentiments of the community seriously.

"Following that, any scheduled programs and activities attended by the speaker have been directed to be cancelled immediately.

"UM has been asked to investigate this matter and report further details immediately," it said.

Zambry, in the statement, also reminded all agencies under the higher education ministry to be alert and conduct background checks before inviting them to an event, and all decisions must take into account sensitivities, and align with the government’s policies and stance.

"Although institutions of higher education are given autonomy to decide on intellectual programmes, it does not mean they have complete freedom to ignore the sensitivities of Malaysia’s majority," he said.

On Tuesday, Gilley, who is a political science professor from Portland State University, allegedly downplayed Malaysia's ties with the US and was criticised on social media after he purportedly claimed that Malaysia had pushed for a "second holocaust against the Jewish people" during a talk in UM.

In his talk titled "Will Malaysia Become an Active Middle Power" at the university, he was quoted saying "A country whose political leaders advocate a second Holocaust against the Jewish people will never be a serious player in world affairs, and will certainly never be a friend or partner of the US."

Explaining the matter on X, formerly known as Twitter, Gilley said he had removed the post containing the quote taken from his keynote address for the safety and well-being of his colleagues at UM, whose leadership has responded to the student outcry.

He added that the quote from his keynote address reflects on his views alone and regrets the harms that he had caused to his academic colleagues.

Malaysia, Which has no diplomatic ties with Israel, has repeatedly condemned the country for its numerous attacks on Palestine, including the current war in Gaza which had seen more than 34,000 Palestinians killed and 77,000 wounded since October last year.

US academic regrets harm caused by ‘second Holocaust’ post

PETALING JAYA: A US academic has expressed regret for the harm caused by a post related to a talk he delivered at Universiti Malaya (UM), where he purportedly claimed that Malaysia was pushing for a “second Holocaust against the Jewish people”.

Bruce Gilley, a political science professor at Portland State University, said he had deleted the post containing the quote from his keynote address at the talk for the safety and well-being of his colleagues at UM.

“The quote from my keynote address reflects my views alone. I regret the harm I have caused to my academic colleagues,” he said in a post on X.

In his talk titled “Will Malaysia Become an Active Middle Power” at UM on Tuesday afternoon, Gilley was also said to have played down Malaysia’s ties with the US.

“‘A country whose political leaders advocate a second Holocaust against the Jewish people will never be a serious player in world affairs, and will certainly never be a friend or partner of the US,’ from my keynote address yesterday in KL on Malaysian foreign policy,” he wrote in his post on X yesterday.

“This has been a long-standing vice of Malaysian politicians going back to (former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s) advice to learn from the Germans on how to kill Jews.

“Most explicitly, in October, agriculture (and food security) minister Mohamad Sabu promised a rally that ‘Israel will soon disappear’,” he added.

Following Gilley’s statements, higher education minister Zambry Abd Kadir ordered the immediate cancellation of all programmes and activities involving the academic.

“I have asked UM to investigate the matter and report all further details,” Zambry said in a statement yesterday.

Gilley had been scheduled to give three talks at UM as a visiting professor.

Malaysia has no diplomatic ties with Israel and has repeatedly condemned the country for its numerous attacks on Palestine, including the current war in Gaza which has seen more than 34,000 Palestinians killed and 77,000 wounded since Oct 7 last year.

UM student union calls for clarity and accountability

Meanwhile, the Universiti Malaya Students’ Union (UMSU) called on the university management to clarify its position and respond promptly to the issue.

Acknowledging the importance of academic freedom, UMSU nonetheless said that using a university platform to promote “Zionist propaganda” was unacceptable.

“We also call on UM’s top management to involve UMSU in all programmes organised at every level of the university’s responsibility centres.

“Each programme should also obtain the approval of UMSU’s president or its cabinet committee,” it said in a statement, adding that this was to prevent the recurrence of issues that incite the sensitivities and anger of Malaysians.
