Angry people are more likely to be successful, a neurologist has claimed.
Dr Guy Leschziner said experiencing wrath or rage can be an “important driver” for success in the modern world as it pushes us to “clear any threats” and achieve our goals.
The academic, who is a professor of neurology and sleep at King’s College Hospital in London, said anger can serve a “very useful purpose” and enable more favourable outcomes.
Speaking to the Instant Genius podcast, Dr Leschziner said that testosterone played a key part in this, as the hormone – which some studies suggest is linked to aggression and anger – responds to success.
He said: “So, if you win at a sport, for example – even if you win at chess which is not particularly known to be associated with huge amounts of emotion – testosterone surges.”
One theory is that testosterone is “fundamentally important” to men in particular to drive success, he said, because it pushes them “in evolutionary terms to sexual success”.
‘Anger is an important emotion’
“And of course, as part of that, being aggressive, being able to defend yourself against other rivals, is going to be crucially important.”
But even in the modern world, anger still remains an important motivator of success.
Dr Leschziner explained: “If you give people a very difficult puzzle to undertake, and you make them angry before you give them that puzzle, they’re much more likely to persist for longer, and they’re much more likely to achieve resolution of that puzzle.
“So essentially, anger is an important emotion that drives us to clear any threats from our ultimate goal.”
The issue in human societies is when anger “turns to aggression” because that’s when it causes harm, he said.
But anger is not the only emotion at risk of causing harm, as he noted that any other “sins”, such as lust or gluttony, are capable of creating problems too. |
