Liverpool's interest in Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing has cooled with the Reds lining up St Etienne wideman Dimitri Payet in a £13.5m move instead.

St Etienne have told Liverpool they will need to pay £13.5m to sign winger Dimitri Payet.
The France international has been on the Reds' radar ever since Damien Comolli left the Ligue 1 club to join Liverpool as Director of Sporting Strategy last year.
Liverpool are understood to be keen on signing a winger this summer, with Aston Villa's Stewart Downing their priority target.
But Payet, who is of a similar style, could be an alternative for Kenny Dalglish and now St Etienne have set the price for the 24-year-old schemer, after rejecting a £7m bid from PSG. |

Downing closer to Liverpool move
Stewart Downing is on the verge of joining Liverpool after being told by Aston Villa that he is free to leave the club, according to a report in the Daily Mail.
Downing is understood to be on his way to Anfield if the Reds are able to meet the ￡19 million asking price for the winger. It is believed that new boss Alex McLeish is reluctant to lose the England international, but with recent contract talks at Villa Park stalling, the club may be prepared to take accept a transfer fee and move instead for Charles N'Zogbia from Wigan. |
