KUALA LUMPUR: Several foreign sex workers around Jalan Petaling have said they were not forced into prostitution nor victims of human trafficking syndicates.
Instead, they claim to have chosen the path voluntarily.
This was evident during an undercover interview, where there were no signs that the women were under any form of coercion.
One foreign woman, known only as Sulastri, 33, said she had "migrated" legally to the country, posing as a tourist.
She said the 30-day period allowed in the country was sufficient to earn around RM10,000 before returning home.
"On average, I can make a net income of RM300 to RM400 a day after deducting room rental fees charged by the agent (prostitution syndicate)," she said according to Harian Metro.
However, as a sex worker in Kuala Lumpur, she is bound by a 30 per cent collection system that must be handed over to the agent or premises manager to cover daily room rental.
"Purchases of condoms and other necessities are borne by myself. I work from morning until 10 pm. I meet all kinds of people. Most are construction workers from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal.
"There are also some locals, usually appearing around midday," she added, saying she has travelled to Malaysia four times to carry out the work.
Meanwhile, in a narrow room on the second floor of the same building, another woman, who wished to be known as Dewi, 26, greeted with a weary smile.
She said job opportunities in her hometown were very limited and incomes were insufficient.
"Selling my body in Kuala Lumpur is easier and faster to make money, though there is a risk if caught by immigration," she said.
