KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian woman stranded in Lombok, Indonesia, for 18 years was finally reunited with her family yesterday.
The return of Norida Akmal Ayob, 45, and her two children was confirmed by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.
Shamsul said Norida originally moved to Lombok with her Indonesian husband and their daughter, before later having a second child.
"However, the marriage ended, and Norida fell into poverty. She worked as a cleaner to support her children after her husband remarried and left," he said in a Facebook post.
Media reports previously highlighted her family's plea for government intervention to bring her home. It was alleged that she lived in constant fear following death threats from her former husband.
Shamsul, who met with Norida's family to discuss her plight, said her children had been unable to attend school and were neglected.
"Alhamdulillah, they have now safely returned home after nearly two decades apart from their family," he said.
He said the mission to repatriate Norida and her children, Nur Fateen Akmadiana and Muhamad Sabani Daniel, was a coordinated effort between Wisma Putra, the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia, the Immigration Department, and Indonesian authorities.
An officer was also dispatched to Lombok to facilitate their return to Malaysia.
