Quiet Bath for Kien Keat

ISOLATION is the best way to keep  fun-loving Koo Kien Keat fully focused on his preparation for the London World Championships,  hence  national doubles coach Rexy Mainaky's love for the on-going training stint at the University of Bath.

Rexy and his charges were there last year and reaped dividends as Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong made the final of the World Championships in Paris for the first time.

Kien Keat's outgoing nature has often seen him lose focus but Bath, a quite town about three hour's drive from London, is an ideal way to prepare for a big event and Rexy has no complaints.

Rexy, in an e-mail, said Kien Keat has been utilising the situation to his favour and has  remained sharp in training over the last two days.

"There are no distractions here and it is good for our players, especially Kien Keat. He was slowed down by a knee strain for a couple of weeks but he has recovered and has been sharp in training. In fact, all the players have been preparing hard," said Rexy.

"There is nothing to look forward to in Bath except for training,  video analysis and discussing strategies. They have a one-day break tomorrow (today) but most just want to rest.  It would have been different if we were based in London where there are lot of things  the players would want to do.

"We came here before the last World Championships and Kien Keat-Boon Heong's results were good. There is an added advantage this time as we have acclimatised and don't have to travel to another country. Last year, it was a little hotter when we played in Paris."

National Sports Institute (NSI) coordinator Kol (Rtd) Wong Ah Jit  said the arrangements this year are much better.

"We have eight courts and that's more than enough for 22 players and five coaches. Chong Wei and Kien Keat are in good condition and are training well," stated Ah Jit in an e-mail.

"This time around, we brought along two chefs and a nutritionist to cater for the  entire team. We even managed to get a  Pakistani butcher in Bristol (about 20km from Bath ) to supply  halal meat."

With just about every detail looked after, the players have no reason to complain and should be looking at a successful assault on the World Championships.

Kien Keat thriving on the absence of distractions in Bath

BATH (England): National men’s doubles shuttler Koo Kien Keat took a dip in the icy cold pool and came out shivering – and with a grin.

It was his final activity of the day together with the rest of the Malaysian World Championships-bound team at the Sports Village of the University of Bath, where they have been based for the last seven days.

The team have also been flexing their muscles at the Fitness Suite, sweating it out at the well-lighted eight-court Badminton High Performance Centre as well as running and sprinting at the indoor and outdoor athletics track – all within the boundary of the sprawling Bath’s famous sports village.

And the 26-year-old Kien Keat gave the thumbs-up for all the efforts to keep the players focused for the world meet, which will be held at Wembley from Aug 8-14.

“I would not have been able to do all this at home without having to deal with so many other distractions,” said Kien Keat.

“At home, I have to spend a lot of time travelling from the training venue to the gymnasium. I also like to hang out with my friends ... and there are other chores to do.

“Here, I have nothing to do but just focus on my training. The facilities are all under one roof. The cold water in the pool (10°C) is just adjacent to the warmer one and this process helps us to recover better after a hard day’s work.

“The whole ambience here just makes you want to push yourself in training.”

Kien Keat hopes that the final push during the low-key centralised training in Bath would result in him and partner Tan Boon Heong achieving satisfying results in their fourth World Championships.

The duo have choked three times in major events over the last one year, falling short in the finals of last year’s World Championships, Asian Games and All-England.

“Our challenge now is to deal with our own expectations on court,” said Kien Keat.

“We tend to make our lives difficult when the draw is kind to us and we tend to do the unexpected when the least is expected of us. We hope to cope with all this in a better way.

“Boon Heong and I want to do well. We are not afraid of anyone in the field.

“It is important that we stay relaxed and do the best that we can.”

Fourth seeds Kien Keat-Boon Heong are in the lower half of the draw with second seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark, South Koreans Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano of Indonesia.

In the top half are three-time world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng, Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, South Koreans Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung and Malaysians Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How and Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah.

Kien Keat has been one of the most successful doubles players when it comes to the world meet.

He won a silver medal with Boon Heong in last year’s edition in Paris and took home two bronze medals – one with Boon Heong in 2009 (Hyderabad) and another with Chan Chong Ming in 2005 (Anaheim).

He also won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles with Wong Pei Tty in 2006 (Madrid).

The one thing missing is a gold medal – and he is quietly hoping that their preparation in the serene city of Bath will inspire him to complete his collection.

The Malaysian team will leave for Wembley tomorrow.

aku sependapat dgn kayla....chen long mampu berikan ancaman pada chong wei...

fizikal yg tinggi...lompat yg tinggi....smash laju, tajam menjunam menjadi senjata utama chen long....dari aspek ini sahaja chen long atasi chong wei....lain2 aspek, chong wei lebih hebat dari CL

Malaysia banking on Japanese to ease path for our shuttlers

MALAYSIA will be counting on some favour from a bunch of Japanese players to “weaken” China’s men’s singles challenge in this year’s World Championships, which will begin on Monday.

Japan’s Sho Sasaki, Kenichi Tago and Kazushi Yamada are seen as spoilers in this year’s tournament.

Malaysian coach Tey Seu Bock said that the Japanese singles players had shown improvement “although they are not consistent enough to win titles regularly”.
Favours please: Malaysia are banking on Japanese singles players led by All-England finalist Kenichi Tago to knock out one or two players from China to ease Lee Chong Wei’s path to a possible world title in Wembley.

“We hope that they can cause some upsets in the early rounds – especially against China – to pave an easier path for others,” said Seu Bock.

Sasaki and Yamada are in the same quarter as second seed Lin Dan of China.

Sasaki beat a well below-par Lin Dan in the second round of the Indonesian Open in June. It was Sasaki’s first win over Lin Dan in five years.

Yamada may meet China’s fourth ranked player Du Pengyu in the second round.

Tago, the 2010 All-England runner-up, may face defending champion Chen Jin in the third round. Tago beat Chen Jin in the quarter-finals of the All-England last year.

Tago and Chen Jin are both in the top half with top seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, Park Sung-hwan of South Korea, Chen Long of China, Germany’s Marc Zwiebler and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat.

Said Seu Bock: “China are quite strong, with four players to go after the title. We, however, depend so much on Chong Wei. So, it will be good if we have other players to weaken China’s challenge by upsetting one or two of their players.”

Seu Bock added that Zwiebler and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana could also pose a big threat.

“If they rise to the occasion, these two players may pull off some surprises and it should make this year’s competition even more exciting,” said Seu Bock.

Zwiebler, who did well to win both the US Open and Canada Open prior to the world meet, is in the same quarter with two-time world junior champion Chen Long.

Boonsak is in the same quarter as Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann, Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark and Indonesia’s Simon Santoso.
