Rossi heads back to Yamaha for 2013 on two-year contract

Valentino Rossi first joined Yamaha in 2004 and achieved four MotoGP World Champion titles with the Yamaha YZR-M1 in 2004 & 2005 and again in 2008 & 2009. He won 46 Grand Prix races with Yamaha over a 7-year period before leaving at the end of the 2010 MotoGP season.

Rossi, who is presently 8th in the Championship standings, will partner Jorge Lorenzo who currently leads the 2012 MotoGP World Championship by 23 points, having taken five victories from the first ten completed races of the 18 race series.

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director, Yamaha Motor Racing

"This announcement is once again excellent news for Yamaha. In June we were able to sign Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013-14 campaign and now we are able to confirm Valentino Rossi for the next two years. In doing so we have been able to put together the strongest possible team to challenge for victories and to promote the Yamaha brand.

We have run this ‘super team’ together in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and during that time we achieved the ‘triple crown’ titles with Rider, Manufacturer and Team World Championship victories for three consecutive years.

The target for the future is obvious and we will do our utmost to achieve our goals.

I have no doubt that with the experience, knowledge, skills and speed of these two great champion riders we will be able to challenge for many race wins and for the 2013 & 2014 World Championship titles.

The signing of Valentino completes our future planning for the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team. Now that this is done we will put our 100% efforts into completing the job at hand and to supporting Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo in their search for race victories and for Jorge’s 2012 World Championship title challenge."

Dovizioso to replace Rossi at Ducati

Andrea Dovizioso has been selected as Valentino Rossi’s Ducati replacement for the next two MotoGP seasons. A press release was sent out on Wednesday afternoon, with the Italian moving up to the works team as his compatriot returns to Yamaha.

With Nicky Hayden already signed up for 2013, Dovizioso’s deal will see the 26-year-old Italian – who won his first race for Honda at Donington Park in 2009 - stepping up from the Tech 3 Yamaha squad. He had been a favourite candidate to join Jorge Lorenzo at Yamaha before Rossi made the decision to move back to his previous team.

“Andrea’s technical sensibility and test riding abilities are of great value, as are his talent and determination,” says Filippo Preziosi, General Manager of Ducati Corse. “The knowledge that we will have him on our team and be able to count on his collaboration serves as an additional incentive to continue with the growth and development of our MotoGP project.

“I’m pleased that he has chosen to be a part of our team. He is aware of the work to be done and he approaches it with enthusiasm and confidence, which are fundamental requirements for achieving success and for competing in this challenging championship.”

To date, Dovizioso has won a total of ten races when including his five 125cc victories and four 250cc successes. He has achieved a total of 62 podium finishes across the three MotoGP classes and was the 125cc World Champion of 2004.

Historic first pole for Khairuddin in Sepang

Moto3™ qualifying for the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Sepang saw AirAsia-SIC-Ajo’s Zulfahmi Khairuddin clinch a historic maiden-pole position at his home grand prix in a fantastic display ahead of Jonas Folger and Sandro Cortese.

Khairuddin chose the best occasion to score a personal hat trick, consisting of his first-ever GP pole position, being the first Malaysian rider to get pole, and doing so on his 21st birthday. The Malaysian youngster found another gear as qualifying got underway, yet left it until the very last laps to put the hammer down to get pole with the fastest lap of the weekend so far with a 2.13’885.

Mapfre Aspar Team Moto2’s Jonas Folger, who had been the quickest rider in all the preceding practices, encountered some traffic on his final laps and just missed out on pole, while Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Sandro Cortese suffered a similar fate on his hot laps. Heading the second row in fourth is Racing Team Germany’s Louis Rossi who increased his pace significantly in the afternoon qualifying, with Estrella Galicia 0,0’s Miguel Oliveira lining up next to him in fifth.

JHK t-shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez carried over his solid form into the afternoon and completes the second row in sixth, whilst seventh spot went to surprise inclusion Brad Binder on his RW Racing GP machine. What made Binder’s feat all the more impressive was the fact that he missed a large part of the morning session due to an engine problem. In eighth, Vázquez’s teammate Adrian Martín managed to hold off last race winner, Red Bull KTM Ajo’s Danny Kent, who will be hoping to fight for the podium once more tomorrow.

Despite having set the fifth fastest time of the session, Binder’s teammate Luis Salom will start from tenth, as he was given a five-spot grid penalty by Race Direction after his crash with Folger last time out in Motegi. Both Team Italia FMI’s Romano Fenati and Mahindra Racing’s Danny Webb crashed in the session, but walked away unscathed.
