Introduction:

We’ll skip past the “Samsung, why?” jokes about the new entriest level Android handset from the Koreans, the Samsung Galaxy Y, since entry level doesn’t necessarily mean a subpar device, and such devices often sell by the boatload. The Y stands for “young”, and means an affordable handset for teens or emerging markets in the sub-$180 price bracket.

Some of the Galaxy Y’s specs are marginally better than the Galaxy Mini, for example, like a slightly faster 832MHz processor and less weight, but the camera is 2MP vs 3MP in the Mini. The biggest improvement actually seems to be the Android OS version – we are running Gingerbread on the Galaxy Y.

We also have a design that is not your typical cheap black plastic handset, but is this an event enough to earn big sales in the low-end Android range, considering it's always crowded down there? Read on the review to find out...

In the box:

  • Samsung Galaxy Y handset
  • 2GB microSD card
  • Wall charger
  • microUSB cable
  • Warranty and instructions leaflets

Design:

The outer appearance of the Samsung Galaxy Y stand out  with a silvery back cover and chrome-like rim around the screen half – only the front is black. Alright, one for the design team here, since it found a cheap way to break away from the mould.

The Samsung Galaxy Y is very small, and gets lost in larger hands

You can compare the Samsung Galaxy Y with many other phones using our Size Visualization Tool.

Moreover, the battery cover has tapered edges and is dotted like snake skin, which make the phone easier to hold. The phone is very small, and gets lost in larger hands, but the 0.45” (11.5mm) thickness is just enough for a good grip. Needless to say, working it with one hand is not an issue, and your thumb reaches everywhere.

The basic 3” LCD display has 240x320 pixels of resolution, but it is fairly bright, and the viewing angles are decent. A slightly larger screen with better resolution would have managed to set it further apart, since now it sports a display equal to the previous lowest of the low from Samsung. Even at that small size, the interface still looks grainy due to the crappy resolution.

Buttons below the display

The power/lock button on the right, and the volume rocker on the left are easy to feel, and get pressed with soft but distinct travel. We have a microUSB port at the top covered with a protective flap.

sesiapa yg berbelah bahagi nak beli galaxy W @ galaxy Y, saya letakkan artikel ini
Samsung Galaxy W Vs Samsung Galaxy Y Mobile Comparison

If you are looking for some good middle end or lower end Android phones, you don’t have many choices. Many would have suggested the Galaxy W, for it has been a very good seller in the recent days while the Galaxy Y, which falls in the lower end of the price bracket is the cheapest Android smartphone from Samsung. While you decide the budget and choose your pick, take a look at the comparison here:

Display

The Galaxy W I8150 comes with a 3.7 inch Super LCD while the Galaxy Y comes with a 3.0 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen. The Galaxy W’s screen has a 480×800 pixels resolution but the Galaxy S has a screen resolution of 240x320pixels.

Both the phones have two touch sensitive below the display along with a physical button and support Multi-touch.

Winner: Galaxy Y (if you like a small yet powerful device)

Camera:

Galaxy W has a 5 Megapixel camera in the rear and has an LED Flash too. It records HD video at 720p and has a secondary VGA camera for video calls via 3G, Skype or Google Talk but the Samsung Galaxy Y has 2 Mega pixel camera at a maximum resolution of 1600×1200 pixels and the camera cannot do HD recording and it records video at 480p. There is no LED flash in the back and does not have a secondary camera on the Galaxy Y.

Winner: Galaxy W

Memory:

The Galaxy W has 2GB of internal memory and a microSD card slot which supports upto 32 Gigabytes of storage, making a total of upto 34GB.

On the other side, The Galaxy Y has 160MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot which supports upto 32 Gigabytes of storage.

Both the phones do not have any microSD card inside the box in most of the regions, however Samsung’s box contents and packaging may vary country to region. So do check in your area before purchasing for it.

Winner: Galaxy W

Connectivity:

The Galaxy Y has two HSDPA bands: 900/2100 and gives maximum speeds upto 7.2Mbps on HSDPA while the Galaxy W has similar bands on HSDPA as well and has a support of upto 14.4Mbps on HSDPA and 5.76Mbps on HSUPA . Wi-fi bands are the same on both the phones supporting the latest band of Wi-Fi, the 802.11n and 802.11b/g as well. Also note that GSM bands 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 are available on both the phones making it available to a wide range of countries.

GPS is available on both the phones and Bluetooth is 3.0 enabled on the Galaxy Y as well as Galaxy W and comes with A2DP support.

Winner: Galaxy W

Operating System and UI:

Samsung Galaxy W has a latest version ofGingerbread, 2.3 with Samsung’s User Interface, Touchwiz 4 and the Galaxy Y comes with 2.3.5 Gingerbread on it too. Both the devices come with Samsung;s Own TouchWiz UI which has just received a lot of improvements over its predecessor, the TouchWiz 3.0 .

Looking at it from the User Experience and from a normal man’s perspective, both the phones have a similar User Interface to operate through it.

Winner : Galaxy Y

Battery and Processor

The Galaxy W has a 1500mAh battery while the Galaxy Y claims to have around 17 hours of talktime and 6 hours and 20 minutes of standby time on 2G while the Galaxy W which is a pretty powerful device in terms of its hardware.

The i8150 has 512MB of RAM along with a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor powered by the Adreno 205 GPU and a Hummingbird chipset while the Galaxy Y has a 832 MHz ARM 11 processor powered by a Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset.

Conclusion

There is a price difference of a few dollars but the Galaxy W is indeed the way to go forward, for the excellent specifications it contains and coming to the mobile phone segment, the Galaxy W has very few competitors in its price segment while the Galaxy Y is priced really low in India and has been selling really well. Do make sure you check out the phone before buying, especially when you are going for a middle-low end device.
