Liverpool want to bolster their youth ranks with a deal for Sporting Lisbon teenager Joao Teixeira.

Teixeira, who turns 19 this month, caught the eye when scoring for the Portuguese side against Liverpool in the NextGen Series.

Midfielder Teixeira comes from the famed Sporting academy that produced Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

Player Ratings: Manchester City 0-1 Liverpool

The Reds will take a narrow lead into the second leg at Anfield in two weeks thanks to a Steven Gerrard penalty in the 13th minute and a strong defensive display

Liverpool

José Reina Paez   7.0
Responded to his howler against the same opponents a week earlier with a far better performance. Solid saves as City took potshots at goal, including one excellent stop to keep out a Richards header. Tried to command his area and made a couple of good punches.

Martin Kelly    6.5
Handed a rare start and, on the whole, performed well. Good understanding with the rest of the defence but nearly punished for a loose pass in the second half that Aguero intercepted.

Martin Skrtel   8.0
A very strong display from the Slovakian, leading by example at the heart of the visitors defence. Dominant in the air and showed excellent pace and awareness, especially to snuff out balls played in the channel for Aguero.

Daniel Agger      Top of the Match       8.0

The Dane would have expected a more difficult evening up against City's stellar strikeforce. Superb reading of the game and composed on the ball. Won the penalty after nicking the ball ahead of Savic.

Glen Johnson   7.0
The England international was selected at left-back and produced a solid defensive performance, forcing Adam Johnson inside into a crowded midfield. Looked slightly uncomfortable playing centrally for the final half-an-hour but did a decent job. Was fortunate not to be punished for a nasty challenge on Lescott in the final minute.

Stewart Downing      6.0
Offered an outlet as he hugged the left touchline in the first half and was heavily involved in the early stages, which included a well struck volley that Hart somehow kept out after a slight deflection. Replaced by Jose Enrique in the 59th minute as Liverpool went to five at the back.

Jay Spearing     6.0
Started the game well in front of the back four before being forced off with a hamstring injury in the 53rd minute. Replaced by Adam.

Jordan Henderson    6.5
A busy, energetic performance in central midfield. Seems to be growing in confidence by the game and showed some neat touches. Will only continue to improve playing alongside Gerrard.

Steven Gerrard    8.0
Liverpool's captain was in inspirational form and scored the Reds' goal with an excellent drilled penalty in the 13th minute. Provided energy and vision in central midfield and was always a goal threat, forcing Hart into action with a lovely curling effort from 25 yards.

Craig Bellamy    6.5
The Welshman's pace was always a threat for the visitors - although he didn't quite find the space he wanted up against Clichy. Looked tired in the second half before being replaced by Carragher 11 minutes from time.

Andy Carroll   5.0
You can't say he didn't try. The £35m signing has been linked with a return to Newcastle but showed he's prepared to fight for his Liverpool career. Unfortunately, he didn't have the quality to hold the ball up and relieve pressure, with the ball appearing to bounce off just about every part of his body during the 90 minutes. Glancing header in the first half went just wide.

• Substitutions
José Enrique    6.0
Replaced Downing in the 59th minute and did his job as Liverpool defended deep and kept a clean sheet.

Jamie Carragher  N/A
Played the final 11 minutes in a hybrid defence-midfield role. Won a couple of strong headers.

Charlie Adam  6.0
Replaced Spearing midway through the first half. Appeared slightly off the pace with some of his tackling and showed few signs of his passing ability.

Liverpool are understood to be interested in Inter Milan striker Luc Castaignos on a possible loan.

Kenny Dalglish may have to put most of his transfer budget into signing a defensive midfielder and is looking for extra cover up front.

Dutchman Castaignos, 19, has also been linked with Everton and Tottenham. He signed for Inter from Feyenoord in the summer and they were initially reluctant to let him out on loan.

Demba Ba is reported to be a transfer target for Liverpool, after it was claimed the Newcastle United striker has a £10million release clause in his contract.

The Senegal international has been the signing of the season, having scored 15 Premier League goals since his free transfer from West Ham to Newcastle in the summer.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew has no interest in selling the striker, but his Spurs counterpart Harry Redknapp sparked speculation about the 26-year-old's future by hinting he has a buy-out clause in his deal.

Press reports have suggested a £10million offer would trigger his release and Liverpool are said to be keen to activate the clause, as Luis Suarez, Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll have managed just 11 league goals between them this term.

However, any transfer will have to wait until the end of the season, as Ba is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Newcastle sources insist the player is happy on Tyneside and Pardew has refused to discuss the possibility of him leaving.

'He's a Newcastle player, he has been brilliant for us and that's all I want to say, really,' said Pardew, when asked about the situation after Saturday's 2-1 win over Blackburn.

Kenny Dalglish is hopeful Jay Spearing isn't facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being forced from the field during Liverpool's 1-0 Carling Cup semi-final, first-leg win over Manchester City on Wednesday night.

The midfielder pulled up sharply midway through the first half after playing a pass and was promptly replaced by Charlie Adam.

Dalglish confirmed Spearing was suffering from a tight hamstring, but he's optimistic it's not too serious.

The boss told reporters: "It was his hamstring, but it wasn't too bad. It just went a bit tight on him. I don't think he has pulled anything, but we'll have to wait until the morning when he gets back (to Melwood)."

Liverpool sangkal laporan

- Agensi

MANCHESTER: Pengurus Manchester City, Roberto Mancini yakin bintang Liverpool, Luis Suarez bukan bersifat perkauman namun berpendapat dia masih perlu memohon maaf kepada Patrice Evra.

- Agensi
