Liverpool have held talks with the representatives of Jaguares striker Jackson Martinez.

The Colombia international, 25, has also attracted strong interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal but his club have raised the price since negotiations were opened in September.

He was originally available for a bargain £5.5million but Jaguares now want £8.5million.

Liverpool are looking into the possibility of loaning Inter Milan forward Mauro Zarate, according to The National.

However, for any deal to happen, Inter would have to release Zarate back to his parent club Lazio because the 24-year-old is currently on a temporary contract at the San Siro until June.

ALEX FERGUSON has questioned the need for peace talks ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League encounter with Liverpool FC at Old Trafford on February 11.

Relations between the two clubs have been soured since the racism row between Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra exploded when the two sides last met in October.

Further bad blood was spilled as Liverpool attempted to defend their striker, with the Reds questioning why Suarez’s word was being ignored in favour of Evra.

Subsequently, Suarez was found guilty of making racist comments by an independent disciplinary commission and banned for eight matches.

Yet even in accepting the punishment earlier this week, Liverpool – and Suarez – have avoided any suggestion of an apology to Evra.

United have said nothing on the entire matter, other than questioning the need for Liverpool’s statements in support of the Uruguayan prior to the disciplinary hearing.

Privately they have been irritated by Liverpool’s stance throughout and Ferguson has cooled talk of discussions between the two clubs, reports of which emerged yesterday morning, before they meet again, by which time Suarez will be available.

“It is nice of them to do it through the press,” said Ferguson.

“You would have thought they would come to Manchester United first.

“I do not see why there is any need for it. But I have nothing to say about it.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes all players should be educated over the way they are expected to behave on the pitch.

The PFA are contemplating the introduction of cultural understanding sessions – which so far have initially been aimed at youth-team squads – in an attempt to avoid more controversies such as those surrounding Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Chelsea captain John Terry.

And Wenger would welcome any extra initiatives to help all footballers become more respectful.

“There is a need to educate both the foreign players and the English players as well, because the English players are not better,” Wenger said.

“You want respect from everybody, foreign players, English players and that everybody is treated exactly the same, not only Suarez but as well the other players. As long as you have players live on television who can say ‘f*** off’ to the referee and get away with it, you cannot convince me you don’t need to educate players. You have to take the right decisions.”

Liverpool striker Suarez has been banned for eight games by the Football Association after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Chelsea defender Terry is to appear in court for alleged racist comments made to Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, which he denies.
