With a new villain set to debut in Sherlock series three in the shape of the brilliant blackmailer and information broker Charles Augustus Magnussen, we’ve been wondering whether it is time to focus on introducing new characters into the fabric of the show, or whether there is a genuine desire to revisit those that have appeared previously in a prominent capacity.
The most obvious contender for a desired return is Andrew Scott’s Jim Moriarty. Despite apparently ending his existence rather messily near the conclusion of The Reichenbach Fall, the consulting criminal left an indelible mark upon BBC Sherlock through Scott’s completely unexpected and BAFTA winning portrayal. However, both Andrew and Steven Moffat have repeatedly gone on record to say that Moriarty is dead – though that doesn’t necessarily count out future appearances through the medium of flashbacks of course…
What impact would it have to reintroduce her into the lives of Sherlock and John, when both have placed her firmly in the past?
While Moriarty is definitely the more popular, a far more likely candidate for a return visit (in the present day of the series) is Lara Pulver’s Irene Adler. Lara is on record for saying exactly the opposite of Scott and Moffat regarding her own character, playing a brilliant guessing game with the interviewing media for many months, and clearly desires a return for her character to the series at some point in the future.
Some have protested that Irene has already had her moment in the sun in A Scandal in Belgravia, and that she only originally appeared the once in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original canon stories anyway. But of course, Professor Moriarty, ‘the original supervillain’ according to Moffat, only appeared in person in the one story as well, but left so indelible a mark his presence seems far more important in the Holmes canon.
Indeed, rewatching the entirety of BBC Sherlock reveals what a long, ominous shadow Moriarty leaves, even when his total screen time is only a fraction of the two lead characters. Who is to say this methodology could not be applied to Irene Adler in the context of the series? And what impact would it have to reintroduce her into the lives of Sherlock and John, when both have placed her firmly in the past?
Sherlockology once made a private joke amongst its members that Irene had to return with a suitably dramatic flourish, with the only apt possibility the sight of her landing in the middle of Baker Street with the aid of a Union Jack parachute! But whatever form any possible return for her entails, you can imagine that it would definitely mix up the interactions in the show once again.
It feels odd. Coming back here. This blog. It's taken me about a week to write this. I kept coming back. Deleting bits. Adding bits. The thing is, I'm not an emotional person. I'm emotional, obviously. I have emotions but I don't embrace grief. I guess I'm very British.
I don't like to talk about it.
But I've been told that I should talk about it. That if I don't talk about it I'll be how I was pre-Sherlock. And I can't go back to that. I've a life now.
I understand that he's dead. And I accept it. I still believe in him. In who he was. The truth behind that will come out, I believe that. But Sherlock is dead and that period of my life is behind me.
And that's what life is. Things happen. Then they're in the past. And you move on to new things. New people. New friends. New beginnings.
But it's also important not to forget the past. And I've found a few photos and a few blog posts I never finished so over the next few weeks I'll be doing that really. Remembering the past.
And I won't feel sad about it. Not any more. Because they were good times. We did good and we had fun. And that's what I'm going to remember. My best friend, and he'd kill me for saying that's what he was, is dead. Sherlock Holmes is dead.
Sherlock Lives: Surprise Sherlock series three trailer sends Twitter into meltdown
Those who tuned in to the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who were given another treat in the form of a short teaser revealing some previously never-before-seen footage.
John Watson popped up in all his mustachioed glory, as did Sherlock’s colleague Anderson, sporting a new beard.
In keeping with Sherlock’s modern day setting, a Holmes fan can be seen holding up her mobile phone as tweets and hastags pop up all over the screen.
However, those hoping for an air date confirmation were left sorely disappointed, as the words ‘Coming Soon’ appeared on the screen in the trailer’s closing moments.
As #SherlockLives trended on Twitter, fans were beside themselves with glee.
‘The #SherlockLives trailer was so epic…that My wifi couldn’t handle it and it just went dead for 5 minutes. It was THAT serious’ one person wrote.
‘Yup, BBC, you definitely just killed me’ another tweeted.
‘Cannot wait for new Sherlock… It’s been away for too long!!!’ and ‘MY HEART CANNOT HANDLE THIS’ were also among the many, many ecstatic tweets.
While the UK waits with baited breath for an air date, US fans can remain smug in the knowledge that they will be getting Sherlock on January 19.
