Air Travel: Hatyai International Airport

The Hatyai International Airport with a completely terminal is about 9km from the city centre... There are only a few flights a day to/from the airport... Only Thai International Airways and other budget airlines flies this route... Tiger Airways from Singapore, Nok Air, Thai Air Asia and Thai Oriental Airlines from Bangkok... the Malaysian Air Asia has temporary suspensed it flights from Kuala Lumpur due to low demand... Passenger coming in from Malaysia normally flies to the nearest airport at Alor Setar and then go to Hatyai by taxi... For international flights, do not forget to save 500 baht for the airport departure tax..

There are daily flights to and from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi and singapore's Shangi Airport. Thai AirAsia, Nok Air, One-Two-Go and Thai Airways. As for me, I've only tried Thai AirAsia. It charged me that time 4200ThB for return, including everything, very cheap! In the other hands, I spent more than 4 hours waiting for my flight! It's delayed for getting back to Bangkok.

The ubiquitous Tuk Tuk, seen everywhere in Thailand with Hat Yai being no exception. The Hat Yai ones have 4 wheels and a steering wheel as opposed to the ones with 3 wheels and motorbike-style handlebars seen in some other places.

HAT YAI , the transport axis of the region, is a concrete mess, but attracts half a million tourists a year, nearly all of them Malaysians who nip across the border to shop and get laid. It's only 50km from the border with Malaysia, and you can get to many destinations from here by direct share taxis, air-con minibuses (tickets available from any Hat Yai travel agent) and trains.

The train station , on the west side of the centre at the end of Thanon Thamnoon Vithi, has a useful left-luggage office (daily 6am-7pm with an unpredictable break for lunch; B5-10 per piece per day); the bus terminal is far to the southeast of town on Thanon Kanchanawanit, but most buses make a stop at the Plaza Cinema on Thanon Petchkasem, on the north side of the centre.

Share taxis and air-con minibuses have different ranks around town. Regular flights connect Hat Yai with Johor Baru, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore; the airport is 12km from town and served by Thai Airways minibuses, whose office is at 190/6 Thanon Niphat Uthit 2 (tel 074/233433).

The TAT office is at 1/1 Soi 2, Tha Niphat Uthit 3 (tel 074/243747) and the tourist police have offices at Thanon Sripoovanart on the south side of town (tel 074/230972), and near the Odean department store on Niphat Uthit 3; the immigration office is on Thanon Petchkasem (tel 074/233760). There is an Internet office on the corner of Soi 2, Thanon Nipat Uthit 3, next to TAT.

Probably Sunthorn Poo. There's a whole statuary theme park devoted to him in Amphur Klaeng, Jungwat Rayong.

An Electrical Engineer from BorYang (one of Songkhla's alternative names) provided the image below. He even tells us who commissioned 'Er Outdoors' and how many 'Baths' it cost:-

http://www.qsl.net/hs9dmc/

This bronze statue was sculpted in 1966 by Jitr Buabus, the former director of the Arts and Craft College in Bangkok in response to the idea of the Mayor of Songkhla Municipality at the time, Khun Charn Karnchanakapun. It was constructed with a budget of 60,000 bath funded by Songkhla Municipality and has become the symbol of Samila Beach ever since.

The Mermaid was a main Phra Apaimanee. an old Thai story written by Soonthorn Phu, the great poet of King Rama II (1809-1824)
