10 urban transformation centres in the pipeline

IPOH: Ten Urban Transformation Centres (UTC) are in the pipeline.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah (pic) said yesterday the federal government was discussing with state governments to develop these one-stop centres in the major cities.
He said this was part of the Urban Transformation Programme so that urbanites were not left out from the government’s vision.
“The cost of city living is higher than that in the rural areas. Urban residents also need government help sometimes,” he said.
Ahmad Husni said the urban transformation centres would be different from the recently-launched Rural Transformation Centres in Gopeng and Wakaf Che Yeh in Kelantan.
The centres would house government agencies, NGOs, banking and financial institutions, health and medical facilities, educational centres, safety and security services, welfare aid, entrepreneurship consultancy centres, and business space to cater to urbanites.
“There will be free tuition services and sports facilities for youths, and interpreters for the elderly who are not well-versed in Bahasa Malaysia,” he said after launching the new Chemor market here.
He said the centres, which were part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy, would be in state capitals and developed through public-private partnership.
Ahmad Husni also said the ministry was talking to several private institutions to collaborate and contribute financial assistance in the forming of the centres.
“The reward for cooperating in this community development project will be returned in the form of incentives, like government tax exemptions,” he said.
He said the Perak government had proposed the Ipoh Central Market building for one of the centres.
The first centre will be launched by the prime minister in Malacca in June.
