Rashid: Thomas Cup team can overcome odds if they stick together

SEPANG: The signs have been far from positive but national singles coach Rashid Sidek is not reading too much into the string of mishaps in Malaysia’s final run–up to the Thomas Cup Finals in Wuhan from May 20-27.

Yesterday, national team manager Datuk Sayed Abu Bakar Abdullah had to miss the flight to Guangzhou with the squad because one of his close relatives had passed away.

Just a day earlier, world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei had to delay his trip to China because he was down with a bad cold. He will leave with coach Tey Seu Bock on Wednesday.

Ready to rock: The Malaysian Thomas Cup squad at the KL International Airport before leaving for Guangzhou yesterday. – S.S. KANESAN / The Star

Last week, the BA of Malaysia had to switch the planned centralised training from Dongguan to Guangzhou due to several factors that would have prevented them from fully utilising the centre.

Camaraderie had also been lacking as the singles and doubles players had not been training together at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

The idea of leaving early was for the team to have time to bond and be totally united for the battle ahead.

Yesterday, national singles chief coach Rashid, who had been in every Thomas Cup campaign since 1986 — as a player until 2000 and as a coach after that — agreed that there had been several obstacles ahead of this year’s Finals.

“I have been to countless team events but I haven’t seen so many challenges prior to the Finals like this one. Hopefully, things will get better from now on,” said Rashid, before taking an early morning flight to Guangzhou with the rest of the team yesterday.

Others on the flight were Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong; coaches Tan Kim Her, Pang Cheh Chang and Hendrawan; sparring players Misbun Ramdan Misbun, Goh Soon Huat, Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming and a small support team from the National Sports Institute (NSI).

Rashid, who was a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup winning team, hoped that the problems would make the players go the extra mile.

“Our team may not be one of the favourites but that shouldn’t dampen the spirit of the players. We hope that the next few days in Guangzhou will fire up the players to defy the odds. They can overcome the challenges if they stick together,” he said.

Hendrawan, who was in the team when Indonesia won the Cup three times in 1998, 2000 and 2002, hoped the first-timers and sparring partners would learn as much as possible in Wuhan.

“I was a sparring partner for the Indonesian team during the 1994 Finals. The experience gave me the motivation to fight for a slot in the team. Taufik Hidayat was also a sparring partner for the 1998 Finals. I hope all the sparring partners will be inspired to become top players themselves,” said Hendrawan.

On the first-timers, Hendrawan said he would do his best to calm their nerves and inspire them to outdo themselves.
Half the Malaysian team will be making their debut in the world’s premier badminton team event.

They are Daren, Wei Feng, Khim Wah-V Shem and Wee Kiong and hopes are high that they will use the Finals as a platform to make a breakthrough to stardom.

Shuttlers to leave for China without sick Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad will leave for Guangzhou today without skipper and world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

The 29-year-old Chong Wei had been down with flu and will need a couple of days to recover.

Chong Wei and his coach Tey Seu Bock will join the team on Wednesday.

The Malaysians will train in Guangzhou for five days and then board a train to Wuhan for the Finals from May 20-27.

Leaving today are Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and coaches Rashid Sidek, Tan Kim Her and Hendrawan.

Tight schedule: Lee Chong Wei attending a promotional event on Thursday.

Yesterday, Chong Wei skipped the team’s final training session at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara but showed up later to explain about his delayed departure.

Hafiz, who is the most experienced member of the team and had been representing the country since the 2002 edition, said Chong Wei’s absence would not dampen the team’s spirit.

“Chong Wei has not been well over the last few days and we understand that he needs a good rest.

“Although he will not be joining us, the important thing is for him to recover,” said Hafiz.

“Yes, we will be short of one member for the next few days but we will not let it pull the team down. All of us know our responsibilities.

“Our team is not the strongest and now, we have to leave without Chong Wei. It may look as though things are not going our way but we are not going to let it affect our focus,” said Hafiz.

“Maybe, this low profile approach to the tournament may do a world of good to us.

“Malaysia always have a chance in team competitions and we will be out to take our chances well. We may look frail outside but inside we are strong and will be banking on our team spirit to pull through.”

The other five contenders for the Cup are four-time champions China, Indonesia, Denmark, South Korea and Japan.

Despite being under the weather, Chong Wei fulfilled his obligations with his sponsors by attending three back-to-back events over the last three days.

Malaysia are looking at a top four finish in Wuhan.

Cheers for Chong Wei at home but concern for Hafiz in Guangzhou

KUALA LUMPUR: There was good news at home when world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei was back in training but in Guangzhou, Mohd Hafiz Hashim’s old injury returned to haunt him ahead of the Thomas Cup Finals.

Yesterday, Chong Wei announced that he was on the road to recovery from his bout of cold after enjoying a light and easy workout at Stadium Juara in Bukit Kiara.

“I met with the doctor today and all is looking good. I’m feeling much better and will be leaving for Guangzhou tomorrow to join my team-mates,” said Chong Wei, his voice still raspy.

“I felt miserable when I could not join my team-mates (who left on Sunday) but what has happened is beyond my control.

“My body just needed some rest. I will pick up the pace soon,” he said.

While Chong Wei sounded positive, Hafiz began his training in Guangzhou on the wrong footing.

“My old foot injury is back. I have decided to take it easy because I did not want to aggravate it. I will see how it goes in the next few days. I’m getting all the necessary treatment,” said Hafiz through a text message.

This is the same foot injury that forced Hafiz to retire from a first-round match against Ashton Chen of Singapore in the South Korea Open in January and it took him several weeks to recover.

If Hafiz’s condition worsens, back-up shuttler Chong Wei Feng will have to step in.

The others in Guangzhou are Liew Daren, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem, Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong and sparring players Misbun Ramdan Misbun, Goh Soon Huat and Chooi Kah Ming-Ow Yao Han.

Doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her said “The players have settled down here.

“They did the warm-up and cool down as a team and also spent time together during meals.

“There’s more team work here and the players are getting the feel for the Finals.”

Tuesday May 15, 2012 - THE STAR

Japan will be a bigger threat this time around, warns Razif
RUN-UP TO THOMAS CUP FINALS
By RAJES PAUL

STARTING today, Starsport takes a look at five contenders of the Thomas Cup Finals – China, South Korea, Denmark, Indonesia and Japan – to gauge their strengths and weaknesses compared to Malaysia. We start the series with former international Razif Sidek analysing Japan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Japan are fast rising as a major threat in the Thomas Cup and Malaysia have to be on guard if they don’t want to return home from Wuhan with their tail between their legs.

Two years ago, Malaysia suffered their first ever defeat to Japan in the Finals when they lost 2-3 in a group tie – much to the horror and disbelief of the home supporters at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Now, the Japanese side look even stronger and are oozing with confidence ahead of the Finals from May 20-27.

They have two singles stars in Sho Sasaki and Kenichi Tago and they can also bank on three solid men’s pairs – Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato, Hirokatsu Hashimoto-Noriyasu Hirata and Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa – to ruffle some feathers. All of them are ranked in the world’s top 16.

Yesterday, Razif Sidek, a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup Finals winning team, said a clash with Japan could go either way.

“I reckon the score will be either a 3-2 win or 1-3 defeat for Malaysia. Japan used to have only one strong singles and one formidable doubles pair during my time but now, they have depth in the team,” said Razif.

“From the past results, Japan look good to challenge for one point in the singles and two in the doubles.

“Their doubles players have beaten our pairs quite often of late.

“They are indeed capable and their only drawback is inconsistency.”

Razif said world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei should not face a problem against Sho Sasaki in the first singles. The Malaysian has never lost to Sho before in all their five meetings.

“The record clearly shows Chong Wei is a superior player. This point is for the Malaysian’s taking,” said Razif.

Razif, however, is quite concerned with the next three matches involving Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Liew Daren and Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem.

“The first doubles could be 50-50, depending on who the Japanese field. Kien Keat-Boon Heong have a good record against the first Japanese pair Naoki-Shoji (the Malaysians had beaten them in all three meetings) but Japan may move up their second pair Hirokatsu-Noriyasu. Koo and Tan had lost to them twice before. This match could be tricky,” said Razif.

“Based on recent results, I don’t think Daren stands a chance against the formidable Kenichi. Kenichi’s standard is one level higher.

“Our second doubles pair are ranked lower and it will be quite challenging for them to come through.”

Khim Wah-V Shem do not have a good record against the Japanese.

“They lost to Hirokatsu-Noriyasu in the Thomas Cup qualifying round in Macau and were beaten by Hiroyuki-Kenichi in the quarter-finals of last month’s Asian Badminton Championships in India.

Razif, however, is confident Hafiz can seal the tie for Malaysia if it needed a decider.

Hafiz may face first timers – either Takuma Euda or Riichi Takeshita – and Razif said: “Hafiz has enough experience to take on either one of them.”

In 2010, Hafiz failed to save the tie for Malaysia when he lost to an experienced Shoji, who has since then swtiched to doubles.

Malaysia and Japan may meet in the final if both qualify for the elimination round as group champions.

They will be seeded joint third-fourth and will go into separate halves.

But if Malaysia lose their Group B tie to Denmark, they may end up meeting Japan in the elimination round due to the draw.

Only the top two teams in the group make the elimination round. The group champions will be seeded while all the second-ranked teams in the group will be drawn to meet the seeded teams.

Both Japan and Malaysia have set a semi-final target.

~ ni razif punye analisis kalau lawan ngan jepun ....

aku setuju ngan pendapat dia .... kalau kita jumpa jepun, kalau menang mungkin 3-2 ...

terpulang kepada pemain doubles mana yg diturunkan ...combination scratch pair  yg mana ...

2nd single jepun tago terlalu kuat utk daren ...

hafiz kalau betul2 fit  mungkin ada harapan utk menang 3rd single ... kalau chong weifeng yg main tak pasti la ..

so kena pastikan dua2 doubles kita menang

- Bernama
