Odds against the Danes as they try to turn tables on Malaysia, says Frost
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: In football, Manchester City overcame a 44-year jinx to lift the English Premier League title. In badminton, Denmark will be hoping for a similar stroke of luck to end their eternal wait to lift the Thomas Cup.

But they appear doomed to fail yet again, as former Danish great Morten Frost Hansen readily concedes.

Denmark’s first real challenge will be against Malaysia in the Finals in Wuhan from May 20-27. Denmark are in Group C with Malaysia and South Africa.

The group champions will be seeded in the elimination round while the second placed team’s fate will be determined by a draw. So there is every possibility of Malaysia and Denmark meeting again in the knock-out stage.

Denmark and Malaysia are both banking on a combination of old and new players for this campaign.

Except for their former world junior champion Viktor Axelsen, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Mad Peiler Kolding, the others, like the evergreen Peter-Gade Christensen, Jan O Jorgensen, Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, Jonas Rasmussen-Mads Conrad-Petersen and Joachim Fischer Nielsen, who is known more for his prowess in the mixed doubles, have played at least once before for Denmark in the Finals.

Malaysia have five seniors – Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Hoon Thien How – and five newcomers – Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong.

Frost feels Denmark should gun for wins from their second and third singles and one doubles to stand a chance of beating Malaysia.

“Peter will lose as he can’t match Chong Wei’s blistering pace. His recent poor form will also affect his confidence,” said Frost, who had coached Malaysia, South Africa and Denmark before taking a sabbatical last year.

With Christensen still trying to find his footing after his ankle injury, a 17th defeat in 18 meetings against Chong Wei seems inevitable.

Former All-England champion Frost said Jorgensen and Vittinghus could turn the tide for Denmark but much will depend on their match temperament.

“Jan should win as I’m not sure how stable Daren is based on his performances over the last 12 months. But Jan can get rattled if things don’t go his way,” said Frost.

The Olympic-bound Jorgensen had been consistent for the last six months and did well to dump four-time world champion Lin Dan in the second round of the Malaysian Open in January. Daren’s form, however, has been inconsistent.

Denmark’s third player Vittinghus is like Jekyll and Hyde, one minute he is brilliant, the next, even I can beat him!” quipped Frost

“Having to play under severe pressure, as Denmark have to win two singles, Hafiz stands a very good chance of delivering the winning point if the match goes to a decider. I don’t think Denmark dare to play Viktor although he is most likely the coolest under pressure.”

On the doubles match-ups , although Denmark boast world No. 3 Boe-Carsten in their ranks, Frost said that it would be evenly contested.

“The doubles can go either way. Most likely a split or both for Malaysia. The Danish top pair may be the favourites against Koo-Tan but Mathias is always getting very nervous. In the second doubles, Rasmussen has been playing badly lately. His partner Conrad can get edgy as well.

“I reckon Denmark may field a scratch partnership of Fischer-Rasmussen (the two most experienced doubles players) to bolster their chances against Malaysia’s young pair in the second doubles.”

On Malaysia’s good record against Denmark in team events, Frost said: “The trouble with Denmark is that they sometimes underestimate the fact that Malaysia always lift their game in the Thomas Cup. All in all, Malaysia are the favourites but you never know.”

‘Jangan terlalu letak harapan’

Mouth-watering clash if Malaysia and Indonesia face off in China

KUALA LUMPUR: A clash between Malaysia and Indonesia in the Thomas Cup Finals has always been a mouth-watering affair.

And doubles legend Park Joo-bong expects another momentuous battle between these two arch-enemies if they come face-to-face in the Finals at Wuhan from May 20-27.

If Malaysia top the group, they will be seeded in the elimination round and a fresh draw may pit them against Indonesia in the quarter-finals.

For the last eight years, the luck of the draw had kept them apart. At their last meeting in the Thomas Cup Finals in 2004, Indonesia brought the roof down at the Istora Senayan when they defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the quarter-finals.

And Joo-bong expects another interesting tussle should these two teams meet because “both countries have players of about the same standard and they somehow rise to the occasion in the team competition”.

Click on image for larger view

“They have old-timers who relish playing in team competitions and new players hoping to make breakthroughs. It will be close, with both sides having an even chance of winning,” said former Olympic champion Joo-bong, who currently coaches Japan.

Malaysia will be out to win points through their seasoned campaigners Lee Chong Wei, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Koo Kien Keat and quietly hoping for their debutants Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng and Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah to strut their stuff.

Indonesia will be counting on their old hands Taufik Hidayat, Simon Santoso, Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Alven Yulianto and rising stars Tommy Sugiarto, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka, Mohd Ahsan-Bona Septano and Ryan Agung Saputra to outshine their rivals.

Joo-bong said that both the teams’ success would depend very much on the doubles combinations.

“I would give the first point to Malaysia. Chong Wei is a better player than Simon and should win the first singles without much problem. I can’t remember when Simon last won against Chong Wei,” said Joo-bong.

Simon has only won once in their eight meetings – way back in 2009 at the Japan Super Series.

“It is difficult to make Koo and Tan the favourites in the first doubles because of their poor form of late. Koo-Tan have the guile and talent but the Indonesian youngsters have showed marked improvement. It could go down to the wire,” said Joo-bong.

The Indonesians are definitely better, having beaten the Malaysians in three out of five meetings.

“There is no doubt that Taufik is a much superior player than Liew Daren. Taufik has a knack for bringing out his best in a team competition. It will be difficult for Malaysia to dream of a point in the second singles,” said Joo-bong.

“The second doubles will be interesting indeed. If it is a straight forward line-up, it should pit Olympic and world champions Markis-Hendra against Khim Wah-V Shem. On paper, Markis-Hendra are the favourites but they have not been in good form.

I think Indonesia may scratch their second doubles. They may pair up Alven with either Markis or Hendra in the second doubles and it will be tough for the Malaysian youngsters to come through.”

If the match has to be decided in the third singles, Joo-bong believes that this is where Malaysia will suffer a heartbreak.

“Hafiz is the more experienced player but he may find the going tough against either Tommy or Rumbaka. It will be very close and, for now, I think the youngsters are looking better physically.”

A Korean enigma
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be in big trouble if South Korea take the Thomas Cup Finals seriously.

Former international Cheah Soon Kit said South Korea have better depth compared to Malaysia “but their success will depend very much on whether they want to go all out to win their first team title”.

Soon Kit says it would not surprise him if the Koreans treat the Finals in Wuhan from May 20-27 as a warm-up to the London Olympics.

Dangerous: South Korea’s second–ranked singles player Shon Wan–ho will be a big threat in Wuhan.

“South Korea have never won the Thomas Cup, but that has never bothered them. In fact, they don’t seem too keen to end the drought,” said Soon Kit, a member of the 1992 Thomas Cup winning team.

“I have observed that the Koreans don’t show the same kind of aggression that Indonesia, Malaysia, Denmark and China do in the Cup.

“In South Korea, gold medallists at the Olympic Games and Asian Games are assured a lifetime pension. And whenever the Finals are in the same year as the Olympics or Asiad, they tend to give little focus to the Thomas Cup.”

Soon Kit believes that if South Korea decide to have a real crack at the team title, then they would surely be the favourites to beat Malaysia.

“Overall, Malaysia are good at winning only one point through Lee Chong Wei, who is a better overall player than the Koreans’ aging top shuttler Lee Hyun-il. It will be tough for Malaysia in all the others ties,” said Soon Kit.

Besides Chong Wei, the others in the Malaysian team are Liew Daren, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong.

The other singles players in the South Korean team are reigning India Open champion Shon Wan-ho, Hong Ji-hoon and Lee Dong-keun. But all eyes will be on their impressive doubles line-up of Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung, Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Kim Sa-rang-Kim Ki-jung.

Soon Kit expects South Korea to have a slight psychological edge following Wan-ho’s win over Chong Wei in the India Open final.

Wan-ho will be oozing with confidence when he takes on Daren and I’m inclined to give the Koreans a sure point here,” he said.

“South Korea are very strong in the men’s doubles.

“Their first and second pairs have impressive records against our top pair of Koo-Tan. Our second pair have not beaten Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong before. The odds are surely against them.

I think a move to scratch our doubles players will only further dilute our strength. The coaches must think wisely before making any decision to field a surprise line-up.”

On Hafiz’s chances against either Ji-hoon or Dong-keun, Soon Kit said: “Hafiz probably has a chance of winning but do you think the tie will come to the decider? If Malaysia’s doubles turn saviours then, maybe, we can hope for Hafiz to turn the tie around for us.”

Malaysia did well to beat South Korea at the Thomas Cup qualifying round in Macau in February, but it was against a team without the services of Jae-sung and Park Sung-hwan because of injuries.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong did well to beat Sung-hyun-Yeon-sung for the first time in seven meetings but it will be an uphill task against Yong-dae-Jae-sung. The Malaysians have only beaten Yong-dae-Jae-sung twice in 14 meetings.

Koreans still a threat without Jae-sung, warns Kim Her

WUHAN: Malaysia will continue to treat South Korea with respect although they have arrived here for the Thomas Cup Finals without doubles speciallist Jung Jae-sung.

Jae-sung, who forms a lethal combination with Lee Yong-dae as the world’s second pair, is down with a back injury and has stayed back to recover for the London Olympic Games, which is a priority for him.

With Jae-sung out of the Finals, which start tomorrow, South Korea will be banking on Yong-dae, Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong and Kim Sa-rang-Kim Ki-jung to keep the flag flying high for their country in the doubles department.

Malaysia’s doubles chief coach Tan Kim Her feels that Jae-sung’s absence would not dilute the Koreans’ doubles strength.

“They will still be strong in both their first and second doubles. They can either make Sung-hyun-Yeon-seong as the top pair or team up Yong-dae with one of them as the top pair,” said Kim Her.

“Youngsters Sa-rang-Ki-jung are no pushovers either. They are young and dangerous and no one should underestimate them.

Now, we won’t know who the South Koreans will field and this will make it even more difficult for us. They can pull off a surprise by fielding a scratch pair in both the first and second doubles and still be strong.

Jae-sung also skipped the Thomas Cup qualifiers in February because of a shoulder injury. In his absence, Malaysia toppled South Korea to seal a ticket for the Finals.

Malaysia are in Group C with Denmark and South Africa while South Korea are in Group D with Germany and the United States.

Malaysia and South Korea may meet in the elimination round as a fresh draw will be conducted as soon as the last group matches are concluded on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kim Her, who was happy with the players’ team spirit so far, said they would hold their first training at the venue – Wuhan Sports Gymnasium Centre – today.

World No. 1 Wei must beat Lin Dan for M'sia to upset China
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei must beat his archrival Lin Dan if Malaysia hope to pull off a win over China in the Thomas Cup Finals.

Former badminton icon Park Joo-bong feels that a good start by Chong Wei will be the ideal motivation for Malaysia against tops seeds and heavy favourites China in the Finals, which start in Wuhan tomorrow.

On paper, China, who boast of an impressive line-up, look good to win their ninth Thomas Cup title and a fifth in a row with home ground advantage. But Joo-bong is not closing the door completely on the other title contenders, including Malaysia.

Besides Lin Dan, China will be banking on Chen Long, Chen Jin, Du Pengyu and their equally powerful doubles pairs of Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng, Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen and Hong Wei-Shen Ye.

Unlike China, Malaysia will be banking on an under-strength team – Chong Wei, Liew Daren, Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Chong Wei Feng, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Lim Khim Wah-Goh V Shem and Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong – to topple the badminton giants.

If Chong Wei wins, Joo-bong said Malaysia should pile on the pressure in the doubles department to steal two points.

“The tussle between Chong Wei and Lin Dan should be keenly contested. For now, Lin Dan is in a slightly better position. His level of concentration has improved since the All-England. He was quite unstable during the Opens in Malaysia and South Korea,” said Joo-bong.

“At the All-England, Chong Wei conceded a walkover to Lin Dan because of injury. He was also not on top of his game during the India Open and Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold.

“Lin Dan will have great support from home fans but Chong Wei can challenge him if he is in good condition. A win for Chong Wei will surely give a tremendous lift to his team-mates.”

In the doubles, Kien Keat-Boon Heong and Khim Wah-V Shem are expected to take on Cai Yun-Haifeng and Zhengdong-Xu Chen respectively.

World No. 8 Kien Keat-Boon Heong have a 4-8 record against four-time world champions Cai Yun-Haifeng. They, however, have not met this year. Last year, they had one win each – with the Malaysians triumphing at the All-England and the Chinese getting their revenge at the Japan Open.

In the second doubles, Khim Wah-V Shem hold the psychological edge over Zhengdong-Xu Chen, having beaten them in the Japan Open last year.

So, there is a possibility that China may field their reserves Hong Wei-Shen Ye instead. The Malaysians lost to this promising young pair in the opening round of the home tournament in January.

“Cai Yun-Haifeng are in their 30s but they still have great speed and power in their game. If the Malaysians can counter them in this area, they will have a chance,” said Joo-bong.

“Malaysia’s second pair are still not very stable. We have seen some good performances but they have also dished out lousy games.

“They have to raise their game to stand a chance.”

Joo-bong said it would be quite impossible for Malaysia to win points through their second and third singles – Daren and Hafiz. The duo are likely to face the formidable Chen Long and Chen Jin respectively.

“Chen Long should beat Daren hands down. How fit is Hafiz? Can he counter all the furious attacks of Chen Jin? Unless Hafiz increases his speed and improve on his killing shots, he will struggle,” said Joo-bong.

Ironically, the last time Malaysia played in China, a relatively new team surprisingly defeated China 3-1 in the semi-finals of the Finals in Guangzhou in 2002. But China exacted revenge two years ago when they humiliated Malaysia 3-0 in Kuala Lumpur.
