Bayern Munich lost the battle but won the war to stumble into the Champions League quarter-finals despite a 2-0 home defeat that saw them edge through 3-3 on away goals over the two legs of a last-16 tie that produced more theatre than was expected beforehand.

Arsenal struck with their first attack of the first half on three minutes as Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky combined to some effect.

Rosicky slid a lovely ball into the path of Theo Walcott, who took full advantage of a slip by David Alaba to smash the ball across the face of goal where Olivier Giroud was waiting to net his 15th goal of the season.

Despite being pressed back for large swathes of the match, Bayern were wasteful in possession and in front of goal. They almost paid a heavy price when Laurent Koscielny rose highest in the home box to nod Cazorla's corner into the corner of the net on 85 minutes beyond goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Carl Jenkinson (Arsenal) - Has been berated by some critics, but this was a performance of maturity and no little quality as the lively full-back stood up to his task in defence with some authority.

PLAYER RATINGS

BAYERN MUNICH: Neuer 6; Lahm 7, Van Buyten 5, Dante 5, Alaba 5; Martínez 6, Gustavo 6; Müller 6, Kroos 6, Robben 6; Mandzuki 6; Subs:Tymoshchuk 6, Gomez 5.

ARSENAL: Fabianski 7, Jenkinson 8, Mertesacker 7, Koscielny 7, Gibbs 7, Arteta 6, Ramsey 6, Rosicky 6, Walcott 7, Cazorla 7, Giroud 7; Subs: Oxlade-Chamberlain 6, Gervinho 7.

Goals from the somewhat unlikely sources of Nacho Monreal and Gervinho gave Arsenal an important 2-0 win over Swansea City that keeps their challenge for a top-four finish on track.

After Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hit the woodwork twice in the first half, Arsenal had to wait until the 74th minute for their first goal, Monreal slotting the ball past Michel Vorm after Olivier Giroud touched the ball off to the Spanish left-back.

Swansea looked short of energy and offered little in the way of a goal threat as Arsenal added a second in injury time, substitute Gervinho converting after the visitors broke quickly at the Liberty Stadium.

The win takes Arsenal to within four points of third-placed Tottenham Hotspur and two of Chelsea, though the West Londoners have played a game fewer.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Santi Cazorla (Arsenal): He probably should have scored but the Spaniard was at the heart of everything Arsenal created and took control of the game with his precise and purposeful passing.

PLAYER RATINGS

SWANSEA: Vorm 6, Rangel 6, Monk 6, Williams 6, Davies 7, Britton 6, Ki 6, Dyer 5, De Guzman 5, Pablo 6, Michu 5. Subs: Routledge 5, Moore 5.

ARSENAL: Fabianski 7, Jenkinson 6, Mertesacker 8, Koscielny 7, Monreal 8, Diaby 5, Arteta 6, Walcott 5, Cazorla 8, Oxlade-Chamberlain 7, Giroud 6. Subs: Ramsey 6, Gervinho 8, Gibbs N/A.

Nigel Adkins's first game as Reading manager ended in a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal as his new side were punished for an error-strewn performance.

The two previous games between Arsenal and Reading this season had generated 19 goals and Emirates Stadium was treated to another show, even if Arsenal could only boast a 1-0 lead at half-time thanks to Gervinho's close-range finish.

The Ivorian forward then contributed two assists in one of his finest performances in an Arsenal shirt, teeing up Santi Cazorla for a lovely curling finish and Olivier Giroud for a rather fiercer drive that flew past Stuart Taylor to end the game as a contest.

Though Reading responded through a diving header from Hal Robson-Kanu, Mikel Arteta struck home an ill-deserved penalty as Arsenal restored their three-goal lead after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was fouled just outside the box.

The victory takes Arsenal to within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea after their shock defeat at Southampton, while Tottenham remain a further two points ahead. Reading, meanwhile, are seven points shy of safety with only seven matches remaining, wins for Wigan and Southampton doing their cause no favours whatsoever.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Gervinho (Arsenal): You cannot argue with a goal and two assists and although Gervinho did look rather ragged at times, he made a decisive contribution to the contest.

PLAYER RATINGS

ARSENAL: Fabianski 6, Sagna 6, Mertesacker 6, Koscielny 7, Monreal 6, Ramsey 8, Rosicky 7, Arteta 7, Gervinho 8, Cazorla 8, Giroud 8. Subs: Gibbs 6, Podolski 6, Oxlade-Chamberlain 6.

READING: Taylor 6, Kelly 5, Mariappa 5, Pearce 6, Shorey 5, Leigertwood 5, Guthrie 5, Karacan 5, Robson-Kanu 7, McAnuff 6, Pogrebnyak 5. Subs: Hunt 5, Akpan 6, McCleary 6.

Ten-man Arsenal withstood a West Bromwich Albion battering to claim a 2-1 Premier League win despite Per Mertesacker's red card.

Tomas Rosicky was Arsenal's hero - his two goals were more than he had scored in his previous 65 league games, while he also produced a goalline clearance.

But what looked like a comfortable win was thrown into jeopardy when Mertesacker clumsily brought Shane Long down on 70 minutes.

Howard Webb sent the German off and James Morrison converted the resultant penalty.

West Bromwich squandered several good chances to take at least a point in the frantic final stages, with Romelu Lukaku and Shane Long both guilty of bad misses.

The win moves Arsenal into fourth place ahead of Chelsea, who play their game in hand against Sunderland on Sunday.

PLAYER RATINGS

WBA: Foster 7, Jones 7, McAuley 7, Olsson 6, Ridgewell 7, Yacob 7, Brunt 6, Dorrans 7, Morrison 6, Thomas 7, Long 6. Subs: Rosenberg 6, Lukaku 6.

ARSENAL: Fabianski 6, Sagna 6, Mertesacker 5, Koscielny 6, Monreal 7, Arteta 6, Ramsey 6, Rosicky 8, Cazorla 6, Gervinho 7, Giroud 6. Subs: Vermaelen 6, Gibbs N/A, Coquelin N/A.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Tomas Rosicky: It can only be the Little Mozart - two goals at one end, a clearance at the other. A true match-winning performance.
