Arsenal’s £42.4 million record signing Mesut Ozil produced a masterful performance as the Gunners held off a Sunderland fight back to win 3-1.

Illness couldn’t prevent Ozil from starting in a free role behind Olivier Giroud, and the German’s influence was immediate. Ozil controlled Kieran Gibb’s long ball with a delightful first touch and rolled in a pass for Giroud with his second – and the Frenchman netted with a silky first-time finish.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal): While Mesut Ozil is already proving a brilliant acquisition, Aaron Ramsey pips him to the post here. Committed defensively and showing a real eye for goal, Ramsey is developing into an accomplished box-to-box midfielder.

PLAYER RATINGS

Sunderland: Westwood 6, Celustka 6, Diakite 6, Roberge 6, Colback 6, Johnson 7, Ki, 5, Vaughan 5, Mavrias 5, Altidore 7, Fletcher 6. Subs: Gardner 7, Borini 6, Wickham N/A.

Arsenal: Szczesny 7, Jenkinson 6, Sagna 7, Koscielny 6, Gibbs 7, Wilshere 8, Flamini 7, Ozil 8, Walcott 7, Giroud 8, Ramsey 9. Subs: Vermaelen N/A, Monreal N/A, Akpom N/A.

Wenger: 'Ozil was outstanding'

                                                                                Dear Arsenal supporter,

We had an outstanding first half at Sunderland but in the end we had to find the mental resources to win the game.

We created a lot but we missed chances to win the game before half-time and 1-0 is always a dangerous scoreline. Sunderland came back in the second half, they were stronger while we dropped physically. But we showed we could dig deep to get the win we wanted.

Altidore's disallowed goal was the big talking point and it's one of those decisions that are controversial because the referee blows straight away for the foul. If there is no goal, people would complain because he didn't give the foul. But we were a bit lucky in that situation.

Mesut Ozil made his debut and he was like the team - he had an outstanding first half and dropped in the second half. He was ill on Thursday and I made a late decision to play him. He was outstanding in the first half and created a number of good opportunities, as well as our first goal.

Olivier Giroud scored that first goal and I'm extremely happy with him. Not only because he scored, but his overall link play is improving from game to game. I think he is becoming a very important player for us.

Aaron Ramsey is another player who has made a big step forward. His two goals showed how much confidence he has at the moment, he demonstrated his quality and his composure.

Aaron's intelligence, his desire to improve and his willingness to listen to advice have all helped him to improve. He is a good learner and he has a fantastic engine as well.

We have a few injuries at the moment with Santi Cazorla ruled out for a few weeks with an ankle problem and I don't think he will play before the next international break. But we have a good squad and we will do our best to make up for Santi's absence.

Thanks for your support.

  Arsène Wenger

Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey scored second-half goals as Arsenal rode their luck to beat Marseille 2-1 in France.

Arsenal saw more of the ball but the hard-pressing Marseille had created the better chances until the visitors went ahead on 65 minutes.

Walcott got a helping head from Lucas Mendes, whose dreadful clearance landed to the unmarked Walcott. The England forward finished with aplomb. Marseille had just gone close when Per Mertesacker sliced a clearance off the bar.

The in-form Ramsey added a fine late second, going on a mazy run before drilling a low effort past Steve Mandanda.

Jordan Ayew pulled one back from the spot in injury time after he was fouled by Ramsey, but it was too little too late for Elie Baup’s side.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal): A bombarding performance from the left-back, who finally showed the mature performance we’ve been waiting for. Two assists as well as a solid shift defensively.

PLAYER RATINGS

Marseille: Mandanda 6, Morel 6, Nkoulou 6, Mendes 5, Fanni 6, Imbula 6, Romao 6, Payet 7, Valbuena 7, A.Ayew 6, Gignac 6; Subs: Khlifa 6, J.Ayew 7, Thauvin NA

Arsenal: Szczesny 7, Gibbs 8, Koscienly 6, Mertesacker 6, Sagna 6, Flamini 6, Wilshere 6, Ramsey 7, Ozil 6, Walcott 7, Giroud 5; Subs: Monreal NA, Miyaichi NA
