Arsenal marched to the Premier League summit with a 3-1 victory over Stoke City at the Emirates Stadium with £42 million summer signing Mesut Ozil playing a pivotal role in all three goals on his home debut.

They broke the deadlock inside five minutes when Aaron Ramsey tucked home a loose ball after Asmir Begovic had palmed out Ozil’s free-kick before Stoke equalised through Geoff Cameron, the American stroking the ball past Wojciech Szczesny after Marko Arnautovic’s volley had struck the post.

The visitors missed a great chance to take the lead when Kenwyne Jones miscontrolled when through on goal and it was to prove costly as Arsenal grabbed their second when Per Mertesacker headed home from Ozil’s corner.

Stoke improved after the break but it was the hosts who grabbed the important fourth goal when Bacary Sagna’s looping header found the far corner of Begovic’s goal.

Ramsey forced a great save from Begovic late on as Arsenal made it four wins on the bounce to move two points clear at the top of the league - although North London rivals Tottenham joined them on 12 points after snatching an injury time victory against Cardiff later on Sunday.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mathieu Flamini (Arsenal): Consistently broke up Stoke attacks and marshalled the Arsenal defence behind him. Looks like an inspired piece of summer business from Wenger.

Premier League - Arsenal remain in profit despite another trophyless season

The sale of striker Robin van Persie to Manchester United helped Arsenal remain in profit in 2012-13, a season when the English Premier League club again failed to win a trophy.

Van Persie's departure to the eventual champions fuelled anger among Arsenal fans at the way the club, majority owned by American Stan Kroenke, was being run.

However, the London team finished fourth in the league to clinch a spot in the lucrative Champions League for a 16th successive season. A strong start to the current season and the signing of German Mesut Ozil have further lifted the mood.

Profit before tax was £6.7 million in the year to the end of May, down from £36.6 million a year earlier.

Arsenal said it made a £47 million profit on the sale of Van Persie and Alex Song, the midfielder who moved to Barcelona. However, the club said it had invested 58.7 million pounds on buying new players and extending contracts.

Since the figures were compiled, Arsenal have spent an additional £42.5 million on buying German playmaker Ozil from Real Madrid. They currently lead the Premier League as they seek a first major trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005.

Albion - whose first XI featured eight changes and their opponents' nine - had the best chances of the first half, with a Craig Dawson header being pushed over by Lukasz Fabianski.

There was also Steven Reid's free-kick, seemingly sent over by a slight touch of Fabianski's glove, although the goalkeeper argued he had not made contact, hoping to prevent a corner that was given nonetheless.

There was no question that Fabianski had produced a save, and a good one, to keep out Youssouf Mulumbu's strike on the hour mark.

And a minute later Arsenal had the lead as Mulumbu lost possession, Bendtner slipped in Thomas Eisfeld and the 20-year-old German midfielder slotted in what was his first Gunners goal on his maiden start.

West Brom equalised in the 71st minute when Saido Berahino, scorer of a hat-trick in round two, headed past Fabianski from close range.

Baggies substitute Morgan Amalfitano hit the bar in extra time but the teams could not be separated over 120 minutes.

In the shoot-out, West Brom initially had the advantage after Luke Daniels saved Serge Gnabry's effort, but misses from Dawson and Amalfitano allowed Nacho Monreal to seal victory for the away side.

An impressive Serge Gnabry opened the scoring for Arsenal as they beat a resilient Swansea City 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium to open up a two-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Aaron Ramsey added a second four minutes later to make the points safe, despite Ben Davies firing a late consolation to set up a dramatic finale.

With Southampton the only other team in the top six to win on Saturday, Arsene Wenger's men now sit two points clear of Spurs at the top of the league thanks to a fifth consecutive win in the league.

In a muted first half, both sides were allowed to bring the ball forward, but neither were incisive enough to create any clear chances.

That only changed in the last minute before the break, when Gnabry burst from the centre of the midfield and set up Olivier Giroud to take a touch into the box, only to shoot wide.

Jack Wilshere was rarely seen, though he was lucky to escape a yellow for a number of petulant challenges.

The second half opened just as quietly - the first incident of note was the goal on the 58th minute. After Giroud and Wilshere combined to find Ramsey, the Welsh midfielder’s reverse pass found Gnabry, who blasted the ball across Michel Vorm.

Less than five minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead. Wilshere won a 50-50 challenge with Jonathan De Guzman just past the halfway line, the ball was worked to Ramsey, cutting inside to blast the ball into the goal.

From there, Arsenal were rarely troubled despite giving Swansea plenty of possession.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mathieu Flamini: Cynical when he had to be, playing constructively when he had the ball, Flamini allowed the players ahead of him the freedom to eventually breakdown Swansea's defence.

PLAYER RATINGS:

Swansea City: Vorm 6, Tiendalli 6, Amat 6, Flores 6, Davies 7, Canas 6, Shelvey 6, De Guzman 6, Dyer 6, Routledge 6, Michu 6. Subs: Bony 6, Pozuelo 6.

Arsenal: Szczesny 6, Sagna 6, Koscielny 6, Mertesacker 6, Gibbs 6, Wilshere 6, Ramsey 7, Flamini 7, Ozil 6, Gnabry 7, Giroud 6. Subs: Monreal 6, Jenkinson 6, Arteta 6.
