Arsenal 2-0 Napoli: Ozil opens account for comfortable Gunners

Mesut Ozil scored his first goal for Arsenal as an early onslaught saw off a surprisingly sloppy Napoli at the Emirates Stadium.

In a pulsating start, he German caressed home an Aaron Ramsey cross on eight minutes, having been found unmarked by the Welshman on the edge of the penalty area.

Ozil then capitalised on some slack Napoli defending from their own throw-in by surging to the byeline and squaring for Olivier Giroud to double the Gunners' lead, and the advantage proved decisive.

Ozil Stars As Arsenal Cruise Past Napoli

ARSENAL'S impressive start to their Champions League campaign continued as Mesut Ozil inspired them to victory over Rafael Benitez's Napoli at Emirates Stadium.

The £42m (RM220m) deadline day signing from Real Madrid scored his first goal for Arsenal with a brilliant finish, and then set up a second for Olivier Giroud as this Group F meeting was effectively decided within the first 15 minutes.

Arsenal's domination ensured the rest of the game was little more than a formality as Napoli, riding high in Serie A, never threatened to upset the optimism that has swept around Arsenal and also taken them to the top of the Premier League.

At the heart of it all was Ozil, the German combining natural grace with deadly contributions that proved too much for Napoli, who had proved their own pedigree by beating last season's Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund in their opening group game.

Arsenal produced the perfect follow-up performance to their win in Marseille and they now head a group that looked littered with hazards when the draw was made.

Jack Wilshere scored his first Premier League goal in three years to help Arsenal move top of the table with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

The attacking midfielder had been heavily criticised by manager Arsene Wenger after newspaper images emerged of him smoking a cigarette outside a nightclub earlier in the week, but was quick on the draw as he saw a shot come off the boot of Jonas Olsson before speeding past home goalkeeper Boaz Myhill on 63 minutes.

It was Wilshere's first league goal since a 4-2 win at Aston Villa in November 2010. He had played 54 Premier League matches since his last goal.

It cancelled out Claudio Yacob's opening effort for West Brom after he rose to power a header into the net from Morgan Amalfitano's cross three minutes before half time.

A draw ends Arsenal's record run of eight successive away wins in the Premier League, but they did not do enough to claim all three points with West Brom producing a stout performance in front of their fans.

Wenger has the consolation of seeing his side return to the top of the standings on goals scored ahead of Liverpool. Arsenal have 16 points from seven games.

PLAYER RATINGS

West Brom: Myhill 8, Jones 7, McAuley 7, Olsson 7, Ridgewell 7; Yacob 7, Mulumbu 8, Amalfitano 7, Sessegnon 6; Berahino 6, Anelka 5. Subs: Morrison 6, Brunt 6, Long 5.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Youssuf Mulumbu (West Brom): An industrious performance at the heart of the West Brom midfield. Produced one tackle on Jack Wilshere that had to be timed perfectly in the penalty area.

Arsenal hit new aesthetic heights, scoring two of the goals of the season so far, as they extended their lead at the top of the table with a 4-1 win over Norwich.

Mesut Ozil was on the scoresheet twice as the Gunners went two points clear of Chelsea and Liverpool, with Jack Wilshere finishing off a remarkable team goal and Aaron Ramsey continuing his stunning form with a brilliant solo effort.

Wilshere was asked to perform in an unfamiliar right-sided role to accommodate the returning Santi Cazorla, but it was from a central position which he instigated the outstanding team move that brought the opening goal on 24 minutes.

The midfielder snuck away from his marker deep in his own half, carried the ball forward and then fed Cazorla to trigger a mesmerising move of five successive first touches, the penultimate one of which was a gorgeous flick from Olivier Giroud to play in Wilshere, who finished superbly for one of the goals of the season.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Mesut Ozil (Arsenal): Even if Wilshere and Ramsey scored better goals, Ozil claimed two as he turned in another highly influential performance in the No. 10 role. He dictated Arsenal’s attacks and continues to make his team-mates play to a higher standard.

PLAYER RATINGS

Arsenal: Szczesny 6, Sagna 6, Koscielny 6, Mertesacker 5, Gibbs 7, Wilshere 8, Arteta 6, Flamini 6, Cazorla 6, Ozil 8, Giroud 8. Subs: Ramsey 8, Rosicky 7, Bendtner 6.

Norwich: Ruddy 7, Martin 5, Bassong 6, Turner 6, Olsson 5, Tettey 5, Fer 6, Howson 6, Snodgrass 5, Pilkington 5, Hooper 5. Subs: Redmond 6, Hoolahan 6.

TALKING POINT:

Arsenal are title contenders, no doubt about it. The signing of Ozil was a watershed moment for the Gunners, elevating their play on the pitch and the perception of the club off it. Arsenal are playing with the flair and arrogance of old, and this was a stunning display of their capabilities. It wasn’t the most dominant performance, but the quality of the goals were exceptional and few can now doubt that Arsene Wenger has a team that can win a trophy this season.
