Langkah kanan The Gunners

Montpellier:

Sentuhan berbisa Podolski

“Podolski memberi impak besar.
- AP

Arsenal can beat City and Chelsea
September 20, 2012

The best players of last season leaving, cries of ‘Arsenal in crises’ echoing all over the media and here we are after four games, Arsenal unbeaten and two points behind league leaders, Chelsea. Arsenal have the best defensive record till now conceding just one goal this season.

Now Arsenal have to face an acid test. The next two games are critical for the gunners. They have to face the English Champions and the European Champions: Manchester City at the Etihad on 23rd followed by Chelsea at the Emirates on 29th September. These next two weeks can shape the season for all title contenders. If Arsenal manage to get 4 points out of the possible 6, they should be in a very strong position. It would also suit them if Manchester United drops points against Liverpool. All that being said, we have reason to believe that Arsenal can beat both City and Chelsea, and grab all 6 points. It might be too early to say anything about the title race but for winning the title, all such games can make a big difference.

If we talk about head-to-head statistics, Arsenal has had the upper hand against most of the teams they have faced in the league. Out of the 180 games played between Manchester City and Arsenal, Arsenal has won 93, City 47 and 40 games ended up in a draw. But things have changed in the last couple of years. Manchester City are now Champions of England. Arsenal haven’t won the league since 2004. This season, however, Arsenal has had a better start. There are many loopholes in the City defence that Arsenal can exploit. Both Arsenal and City are unbeaten till now but Arsenal have had a better defensive record. Conceding just one goal, their defence has got a new life since Steve Bould took over. There might be questions raised over how reliable Mannone is in goal. Wojciech Szczesny was out of Tuesday’s Champions League game due to an ankle injury and there is no official statement released by Arsenal on how long he will be on the side-lines. As it stands, Vito Mannone is Arsenal’s no. 1 goalkeeper in the absence of Szczesny and Fabianski.

Koscielny pegs back City

Laurent Koscielny earned Arsenal a deserved 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium with a late equaliser as Manchester City's stuttering start to the season continued.

The Gunners had much the better of the first half but could not make their dominance count and Joleon Lescott headed the hosts in front from a 40th-minute corner.

That looked like being the way it would stay as Arsenal struggled to find a way to goal, but Koscielny proved the unlikely hero with an unstoppable shot eight minutes from time.

Wenger: 'A point was the minimum we deserved'

Dear Arsenal supporter,

I was pleased with Sunday's result because a point was the minimum we deserved when you consider what we put into the game.

I was happy also with the quality of our display and our spirit, but I was also a bit frustrated because I feel there was an opportunity to pick up all three points. We had early chances and very late chances, especially when Gervinho missed the target from the edge of the box.

Overall I hope that a result like this will reinforce our belief and confidence and reassure us about our potential in this league.

We conceded a goal from a corner and I take that criticism on board, but it's worth noting that Manchester City are the team who score more goals than anyone else from set pieces.

At the other end of the pitch it is true that we missed chances, and it's important to be clinical in games like this, but I believe that will come. When you have the basic quality that we showed on Sunday, the rest can improve.

Vito Mannone had another good game in goal. He looks very solid. He made a little mistake on the corner for Man City's goal, but I am happy that it didn't affect his game after that. I like what he is doing.

I can confirm that Thomas Vermaelen did not play because he had 'flu so we left him at home.

Laurent Koscielny had a great game and stepped in very well. We have a number of classy centre backs, and it is a very difficult choice. No matter who is left out, they will feel disappointed. But I will rotate the centre backs and take into consideration the strikers we will face.

Thanks for your support.

Arsenal benam Coventry 6-1

LONDON: Penyerang Perancis, Olivier Giroud mengakhiri penantian untuk meledak gol apabila membantu kemenangan besar Arsenal 6-1 ke atas Coventry pada pusingan ketiga Piala Liga Inggeris di Stadium Emirates, awal pagi tadi.

Selepas kemarau gol enam perlawanan, Giroud akhirnya memperoleh gol sulung bersama kelab barunya itu pada minit ke-39. Bagaimanapun, bekas penyerang kelab Montpellier itu gagal menambah jaringan apabila sepakan penaltinya pada separuh masa kedua diselamatkan penjaga gol lawan, Joe Murphy.

Namun Arsenal terus menambah jaringan menerusi Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain pada minit ke-57 diikuti jaringan pemain sayap Russia, Andrey Arshavin enam minit kemudian.

Gol keempat Alsenal disumbat Theo Walcott pada minit ke-74.

Coventry cuba memberi saingan dan akhirnya berjaya mencuri satu gol menerusi Callum Ball pada minit ke-78.

Pemain remaja Sepanyol, Ignasi Miquel pula menambah derita pelawat untuk gol kelima dua minit kedua dan Walcott menutup kemenangan besar Arsenal untuk gol keenam pada minit-minit terakhir perlawanan. - AFP
