The Oktoberfest, in the Palestinian Christian town of Taybeh, rounded off its 8th consecutive year successfully last weekend, with more than 15,000 visitors over the two days. Concert of Dam Rap, Toot Ard, The Sun, Trio Dona Zefa, X Games.
The Taybeh Festival rounded off its 8th consecutive year successfully Sunday 7th October, with more than 15,000 visitors over the two days. Initiated in 2005 by the newly elected Mayor David C. Khoury, the Taybeh festival is a unique and original event in Palestine, offering a diversity of concerts and shows, and presenting a large variety of local Palestinian products. Beginning with 4,000 visitors, five sponsors and just a few stands, the festival has quadrupled in size, significantly diversifying the number of Palestinians goods and cultural performances it has to offer.
Nowadays, five cooperatives, the Catholic Church, and the Boys and Girls Scouts work alongside the Taybeh municipality to make this event an annual sensation. The 2012 edition offered over fifteen concerts (including four foreign bands), ten performances by the Taybeh Folklore Dance Group, shows by the Palestinian Circus School and the Al-Harah Theater, and over forty stands of Palestinians local products, artifacts and mobile restaurants.
Maria C. Khouri, the festival’s organizer, explains, “it is important to enhance cultural exchanges. The festival attracts many foreigners; it is a great opportunity to introduce them to local Palestinian products and to our culture through traditional music and dance performances. It is also a window for Palestinians to discover foreign music. The festival offers a moment of relaxation away from the occupation. And at the same time, we want to show we are alive; we celebrate life and peaceful resistance.”
The festival also has a positive economic impact, boosting the local economy during a time when the majority of the West Bank villages are facing serious economic hardships. Mariam comments, “The festival has definitely helped the town to develop and has made it a true alternative tourist destination. We inspired many other cities and towns in organizing their own festival reflecting their cultural uniqueness. I am glad we succeeded in pushing the economy in this creative way.”

Gereja pun Israel gi bom. Bukan Arab Moslem jah yang diserang.
Arab Moslem Palestina ini pun asyik la diperlihatkan terseksa tiap hari seperti takda life di tivi Malaysia. Padahal ada jah masa layan hiburan seperti join Arab Idol bagai.

SEJARAH SEBENAR OKTOBERFEST
Pengetahuan kita tentang sejarah dan budaya asing lemah, jadi senang dikelentong oleh kapitalis penunggang budaya ("cultural appropriator").
Salah satu contoh ialah polemik pasal Oktoberfest kebelakangan ini. Politikus sibuk nak buat modal. Ada yang nak tunjuk mereka "holier than thou", ada yang nak tunjuk mereka "more liberal than thou".
Tapi semua "missed the point" bahawa "Oktoberfest" yang cuba diadakan hanyalah beer fest yang berlindung disebalik nama Oktoberfest. Kalau nak buat beer fest kenalah deal dengan prosedur dan pihak berkuasa. Itu common sense, tak perlu nak polemikkan soal hak dan kebebasan, atau kononnya "appreciate German culture".
Sebenarnya mereka know nothing pasal Oktoberfest.
Oktoberfest adalah pesta rakyat ("volksfest") di kawasan Bavaria (atau Bayern) untuk meraikan hasil tuaian. Ia mempunyai sejarah beratus-ratus tahun, kemudian ia dijadikan sambutan tahunan besar-besaran sempena perkahwinan Putera Mahhkota Ludwig pada tahun 1810 dan diteruskan sehingga kini.
Pada asalnya, "Bavaria is not Germany". Negara bernama "Germany" hanya wujud bermula tahun 1871. Sebelum 1871, yang ada hanya berpuluh-puluh negeri yang dihuni oleh orang Jerman ("German states").
Menjelang abad ke-19, sebuah negeri Jerman dari utara bernama Prussia cuba menyatupadukan semua negeri-negeri Jerman menjadi sebuah negara "Germany". Bavaria tak nak join Germany sebab Bavaria ni negeri Katolik, sedangkan kebanyakan negeri-negeri Jerman tu negeri Protestan. Namun Bavaria akhirnya join disebabkan kalah perang dengan Prussia.
Sentimen pemisahan itu masih ada, cuma tak sekuat Catalonia atau Scotland. Namun Bavaria tetap ada pride dia. Oktoberfest adalah masa untuk orang Bavaria mempamerkan budaya dan identiti tersendiri yang berbeza daripada Jerman yang didominasi oleh Prussia.
Mereka memperkenakan pakaian tradisional ("trachten") seperti Dirndl dan Lederhosen. Muzik tradisional Bavaria dimainkan. Dan simbol-simbol Bavaria seperti bendera biru-putih dikibarkan. Lambang biru-putih ni boleh nampak kat logo BMW (akronim kepada Bavarian Motor Works) dan logo kelab bola sepak Bayern Munich.
Itulah "Bavarian pride". Jadi kalau nak kata Oktoberfest sebagai "celebration of German culture" adalah satu insult kepada orang Bavaria. Was zum teufel ist "German F&B Festival"? Just call a spade a spade.
Beer yang dihidang semasa Oktoberfest juga merupakan sumber pendapatan orang Bavaria. Beer mereka bukan sebarang beer tapi "Oktoberfestbier/Festbier" atau "Märzen". Jenis beer ini dilindungi oleh undang-undang "Protected Geographical Indication" di bawah EU. Jadi, kapitalis beer yang bukan berasal daripada Bavaria tak boleh nak tunggang Oktoberfest. Sebaliknya mereka mensasarkan negara yang kurang kesedaran tentang sejarah dan budaya seperti US dan negara-negara Asia macam kita ni.
Satu-satunya Oktoberfest yang "authentic" di Malaysia ialah Oktoberfest yang dianjurkan oleh Malaysian-German Society (MGS) sejak tahun 1973 di Pulau Pinang. Untuk tahun ini, MGS buat secara bebas alkohol (http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/nation/2017/10/04/non-alcoholic-beers-to-debut-in-penang-oktoberfest-this-year/). Orang Jerman sendiri pun bertolak ansur sebab niat mereka nak promote budaya, bukan nak promote beer.
Yang selainnya lebih kepada Kelentongfest. Penaja utama pun Carlsberg dan Heineken. Apa jadahnya Carlsberg (syarikat Denmark) dan Heineken (syarikat Belanda) nak promote budaya Jerman? Tapi orang kita tak kira, tengok ada "-berg" dan "-ken" je terus ingat Jerman.
Jadi, kalau kamu betul sayangkan budaya Jerman atau lebih tepat budaya Bavaria, baik kamu simpan duit pergi ke Munich menghadiri Oktoberfest yang sebenar untuk menyumbang kepada ekonomi Bavaria. Bukannya memperkayakan kapitalis yang menunggang budaya.
Otherwise, you're just a cultural appropriator, not a cultural appreciator.
