Cuaca sejuk Korea cabaran utama buat Chong Wei

“Bermain di tempat sejuk biasanya membuatkan pergerakan bulu tangkis perlahan, jika melakukan smash sekalipun, tahap kelajuan berkurang sekali gus membolehkan lawan melakukan pukulan balas,” kata Chong Wei.

Tough love paying dividends

By FABIAN PETER
Soong Fie Cho

IT may have been the toughest three months for Sabah’s Soong Fie Cho and Amelia Alicia Anschelly since they left their hometown to join the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but the pair are looking at it as a form of motivation to reach greater heights.
The duor, who were recently crowned women’s doubles champion at the National Circuit Grand Prix Finals in Alor Star, will participate in the Maybank Malaysia Open Superseries for the first time under BAM’s management.
“It’s completely different, and we are still trying to adapt to the training style here,” said Fie Cho.
“In Sabah, we train five times a week and each session last for about two hours.
“Here it’s six times a week and there are two sessions each day, it’s pretty tiring and tough.”
Fie Cho 24 and Amelia 25 have been partners for the last three years.
“Missing home is definitely one of the biggest challenge, but we are very happy with our progress, and winning the National Circuit Grand Prix final is one of our biggest achievements.
“I really hope we continue to do well.”
Fie Cho-Amelia competed in the Malaysia Open last year, but they did not make it past the first round of qualifying. They are hoping to at least make the last 16 this year.
Apart from Fie Cho and Amelia, the other women’s doubles pair competing in the Malaysia Open are Goh Liu Ying-Lim Yin Loo, Chow Mei Kuan-Yean Lee Meng and Shevon Lai Jemie-Merylen Ng Poau Leng.
Top doubles pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun and Woon Khe Wei, are doubtful however as Khe Wei is still suffering from a left ankle injury. They have already pulled out of the Korea Open Superseries Premier from Jan 8-13.
The Maybank Malaysia Open Superseries will be from Jan 15-20.
