FIA confirms 19 races in 2014

The FIA has confirmed a 19-race calendar for 2014, with South Korea dropping off and provisional races in New Jersey and Mexico also missing.

The Korean Grand Prix will be absent following four years on the calendar, while both New Jersey and Mexico were set to be new additions when announced on a provisional 22-race schedule back in September. However, both have been postponed and the revised calendar - ratified at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Paris - sees the season now end in Abu Dhabi.

Schumacher critical, in coma after ski accident

29 December 2013 – Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition and in a coma as a result of the head injury he suffered in a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday morning, it has been confirmed.

A statement issued by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble explained that the German suffered a "head trauma with coma that required immediate neurosurgical treatment."

Schumacher, 44, was initially taken to a hospital in the valley town of Moutiers after falling at the Méribel ski resort at around 11am local time, during which he hit his head on a rock.

After initial treatment, he was transferred to the Grenoble hospital, where he is currently situated.

Michael Schumacher 'critical' after skiing accident

Michael Schumacher is in a "critical" condition in hospital following a head injury suffered in a fall while skiing with his son in the French Alps.

Schumacher was skiing off-piste in the resort of Meribel when the accident happened on Sunday morning. Although he was wearing a helmet he suffered a serious head trauma and was flown to hospital in Moutiers by helicopter and was subsequently transferred to a bigger facility in Grenoble. He was reported to be conscious immediately after the accident he had lost consciousness by the time he reached hospital.

A statement from Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble said Schumacher had "suffered a severe head trauma with coma on arrival, which required immediate neurosurgical treatment" and that "he remains in a critical condition".

Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director general of Meribel ski resort, told radio station RMC: "The police are in the process of investigating the cause of the fall. He fell at 11.07am, whilst off piste in Meribel. The emergency services arrived quickly at 11.15am. He was in shock, a little shaken but conscious."

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said: "Michael was on a private ski trip in the French Alps when he had an accident. He was taken to hospital and is being cared for by medical professionals. Michael was not on his own at the time of his accident and was wearing a helmet. No other person was involved in the incident."

Professor Gerard Saillant, a close ally and friend of Schumacher, and his former Ferrari team boss Jean Todt were at the hospital along with Schumacher's wife and children. Professor Saillant is an expert in brain and spine injury who oversaw Schumacher's care when he broke his leg in the 1999 British Grand Prix.

Schumacher retired from Formula One at the end of 2012 following a three-year comeback stint with Mercedes. He won the first two of his world championships with Benetton in the mid-1990s before securing five consecutive titles for Ferrari from 2000 to 2004.
