Having achieved 2012 World Championship glory in the inaugural Moto3 season courtesy of Sandro Cortese, Aki Ajo’s Red Bull KTM team have maintained a strong rider line-up for the season to come – despite Cortese’s move up to Moto2.
Ajo can count with three talented young riders for 2013 and Luis Salom, Arthur Sissis and Zulfahmi Khairuddin will all be aiming for regular podiums. Salom in particular has been touted as a potential title candidate after his two GP wins and total of eight rostrum finishes last year.
After the team’s private workout in Almeria last week, the three riders took part in the first official Moto3 test of the pre-season in Valencia this week, with Salom (pictured above) finishing the three-day Valencian practice excursion third on the overall timesheet, 0.370s off pace man Maverick Viñales.
“I had a crash on the first morning of testing at Valencia, but I got back out really quickly and I set a fast lap almost immediately,” the 21 year-old Spaniard told redbull.com.
This was an important test as obviously this is a race circuit so we need to have a good set up for when we come back here.
“This gives us a chance to work more on our new bike.”
On his specific goals before the first race of the year in Qatar, he added: “We want to get there with as much work done as possible, so we are really ready to go. There is a lot still to do but we need to have everything in place so that we can turn up and run at the front.”

Salom’s young Australian colleague Sissis, meanwhile, described his testing experience at Valencia thus: “We were working on additional settings and initially it didn’t feel good but I’m quite pleased with how it went in general.”
Although Sissis finished the Valencia test in 15th place overall he is hoping for solid results this year after achieving his first GP podium in his home race towards the end of 2012.
“I just want to be as fast as possible and do much better than last season,” he said. “A few more podiums would be good, I got one last year and I want more.
A few top-three finishes and top six overall is my aim.
“If I can stay with Zulfahmi in most races I will be happy, maybe I can beat him and then I won’t be the third placed Red Bull KTM rider every week! I think Zulfahmi will be fast though.”

For his part, Khairuddin described his winter activity to date, commenting: “We had a great winter. I spent all my time in Malaysia and we had great weather so I was training six days a week!
I live close to the Sepang circuit where there is a Motocross track and a Supermoto track where I worked.
“We were also in the gym a lot, three days a week. I’m pretty happy with my fitness and I’ve improved a lot compared to last year.”
The Red Bull KTM Ajo team will continue their pre-season work next week at the Jerez test.
