In the last 10 years Sungai Nyamuk has developed into a town with four-star hotels. Sabahans living on the Malaysian side of Pulau Sebatik are envious of the town’s rapid development, which they believe rose from the smuggling of subsidised goods from Tawau. The population of Indonesian Sebatik is 10 times that of Malaysian Sebatik.
