Police have busted an Internet love scam syndicate run by 14 Africans after three women from China suffered losses amounting to RM9.5 million after being conned by the syndicate since late last year.
Director of the Commercial Crimes Division Bukit Aman, Dato’ Wira Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said, all of the men aged between 22 and 32 years were arrested in 4 separate raids conducted on last April 25th. at a condominium in Taman Mutiara Indah, Puchong.
According to him, they also seized 7 units of laptops, 3 desktop PCs, 27 mobile phones, 2 Samsung tablets, 3 units of external hard disks, 5 units of pendrive, 4 units of wireless router, 3 units of wireless broadband modems, 12 pieces of ATM cards and 1 unit of “Magic Jack” – a device for making Voice over Internet calls.
Based on information and investigations, the syndicate used the identity “Goodman” to interact and to mislead the victims with gifts and romantic words. The victims were then asked by the suspects to deposit monies into several local bank accounts before they disappeared from trace.
All suspects have been remanded since 26th April till 1st May 2013.
