It was August 23 when it started -- a Friday -- an outbreak of Arab anti-Jewish violence in the Holy Land unprecedented at the time in its ferocity. It began when Haj Amin al-Husseini, mufti of Jerusalem, ally of the Nazis and mentor of the current PLO leader Yasser Arafat, falsely accused Jews of defiling and endangering local mosques, including al-Aqsa. The call went out to the Arab masses: "Itbakh al-Yahud!" -- "Slaughter the Jews!"
And so they did. For seven days in 1929, 19 years before the state of Israel was born, Arab mobs terrorized communities throughout the land of Israel, killing 133 Jews and injuring more than 300. Jerusalem, Motza, Hebron, Safed, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, and other parts of the country were the scenes of severe anti-Semitic attacks. The ancient city of Hebron, home to the Cave of the Patriarchs, suffered the worst violence. Sixty-seven Jews were killed by hundreds of their Arab neighbors in the space of one day -- the Jewish Sabbath. The homes where Jews thought they could find safety, including that of Eliezer Dan Slonim, the sole Jewish member of the Hebron Municipal Council and a friend to local Arab elders, became slaughterhouses. In Slonim's home alone, 22 people were murdered that day, including his wife and two young children. After the massacre, in a perverse inversion of morality, the British mandatory authorities exiled the Jewish survivors to Jerusalem, ending a 3,000-year-old Jewish presence in Hebron. That presence was only renewed in 1967, with the Israeli takeover of Judea and Samaria (the "West Bank" ).
But the 1929 pogroms were not the first incidence of Arab bloodletting in the land of Israel. In 1921, Arab gangs attacked Jews in Jaffa, Rehovot, Petah Tikva, and other Jewish towns. Forty-seven Jews were killed and over 140 were wounded. The Haycraft Commission, appointed by the British government to investigate the events, concluded:
The racial strife was begun by the Arabs, and rapidly developed into a conflict of great violence between Arabs and Jews, in which the Arab majority, who were generally the aggressors, inflicted most of the casualties... an already acute anti-Jewish feeling extended it into an anti-Jewish riot. A large part of the Muslim and Christian communities condoned it, although they did not encourage violence. While certain of the educated Arabs appear to have incited the mob... unfounded stories of provocation were believed and acted upon without any effort being made to verify them.
Yet, the same commission found, that the "fundamental cause" of the riots were the victims themselves:
...a feeling among the Arabs of discontent with, and hostility to, the Jews, due to political and economic causes, and connected with Jewish immigration, and with their conception of Zionist policy as derived from Jewish exponents....
Similarly, the decade following the massacres of 1929 also saw attacks on Jewish towns in f Israel. From 1936 through the beginning of 1939 Arab gangs roamed the country, killing Jews where they could. At the time, Saudi Arabian king Ibn Saud informed a British colonel, H. R. P. Dickson:
Our hatred for the Jews dates from God's condemnation of them for their persecution and rejection of Isa (Jesus) and their subsequent rejection of His chosen Prophet... for a Muslim to kill a Jew, or for him to be killed by a Jew ensures him an immediate entry into Heaven and into the august presence of God Almighty.
That three-year "insurrection" took the lives of 415 Jews. The Arab Higher Committee, headed by the Mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini, led the campaign of terrorism yet again.
It behooves friends of the truth to recall the foregoing history when Arab spokesmen and PLO apologists attempt to "contextualize" terrorism against Jews in Israel by blaming it on "the Israeli occupation of 1967." Such violence did not start in 1967, or even upon Israel's founding in 1948; it was never limited to any geographical boundaries; and its source is not political. As a Friday-sermon broadcast on Palestinian Authority television last year declared, "blessings to he who shot a bullet into the head of a Jew... the enemies of Allah, the cursed nation in the Koran, whom the Koran describes as monkeys and pigs, worshippers of the calf and idol worshippers." There was also a message for the future in the words of that PA-appointed cleric, "Allah shall make the Muslim rule over the Jew, we will blow them up in Hadera, we will blow them up in Tel-Aviv and in Netanya... We will enter Jerusalem as conquerors, and Jaffa as conquerors, and Haifa as conquerors and Ashkelon as conquerors..." Referring to a Hadith (a Muslim oral tradition attributed to Muhammad or his disciples), the preacher said that nature itself will come to assist the Muslims in their pursuit of the Jews "...until the Jew will hide behind the trees and stones and the tree and stone will say: 'Muslim! Servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, kill him!'"
It was a Friday -- September 29, 2000 -- when it started this time, too -- an outbreak of Arab anti-Jewish terrorism unprecedented in its unremitting ferocity. It began when PLO leaders loudly accused Jews of defiling and endangering local mosques, including al-Aqsa.

Jim Prince and a team of American accountants - hired by Arafat's own finance ministry - are combing through Arafat's books. Given what they've already uncovered, Arafat may be rethinking the decision. Lesley Stahl reports.

"What is Mr. Arafat and the Palestinian Authority worth today?" asks accountant Jim Prince. "Who is controlling that money? Where is that money? How do we get it back?"
So far, Prince's team has determined that part of the Palestinian leader's wealth was in a secret portfolio worth close to $1 billion -- with investments in companies like a Coca-Cola bottling plant in Ramallah, a Tunisian cell phone company and venture capital funds in the U.S. and the Cayman Islands.
According to Fayyad, "There is corruption out there. There is abuse. There is impropriety, and that's what had to be fixed."
"Arafat for years would cry poor, saying, 'I can't pay the salaries, we're gonna have a disaster here, the Palestinian economy is going to collapse,'" says Indyk. "And we would all mouth those words: 'The Palestinian economy is going to collapse if we don't do something about this.' But at the same time, he's accumulating hundreds of millions of dollars."

Following the defeat of Turkey in World War I, Britain strengthened its power in Palestine. Massive immigrations of Jews from many countries raised the Jewish population in Palestine from about 50,000 buy the beginning of 1900 to approximately 300,000 before World War II.

Setting the Record Straight
In response to George Jonas’ Nov. 25 (“Israel’s War of Independence Continues”) article, I would like to make a few comments. Jonas claims that the continuing conflict in the Middle East is due to the Arab and Muslim world’s rejection of the legitimacy of the Jewish state. That statement makes a great leap of logic and ignores many crucial variables in the equation. In order to reformulate this equation one must find the source of the Arab/Muslim world’s difficulty in accepting the legitimacy of Israel.
Let it be mentioned that until the early 1900s Jews, Muslims and Christians lived in peace in Palestine. The mass immigration of European Jews into Palestine beginning in the 1890s was initially accepted until their intentions were known – that is, the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. So, contrary to popular thought a Jewish presence was not rejected outright but until the presence of the Palestinians was threatened.
Now, as for the Peel Commission, it would be more accurate for Jonas to say that it was voted against by the Jewish Congress despite the urgings of Ben Gurion and Weizmann. Furthermore, Jonas does not even discuss the role of terrorism by Jewish groups. In 1939 the Irgun calls for the conquest of Palestine by force. In 1944, Stern and Irgun join forces to carry out a terror campaign against the British. At that time, the Conference on Arab Unity called for the formation of an Arab state in Palestine in which non-Arab communities – including the Jews – would enjoy full citizenship rights. Essentially, the Arabs were still willing to include the Jewish community despite the operations of terror being committed against British and Arab targets throughout Palestine.
The climax of the terror campaign was the bombing of the King David Hotel in July of 1946 killing 91 people. Jonas forgets to mention the role that that bombing played in Britain’s decision to quit the Mandate and transfer it over to the United Nations. In addition, British Minister Lord Moyne was gunned down by Jewish terrorists in Cairo in 1944 shocking Churchill – a supporter of Zionism. And the Nakba (“catastrophe”) refers not solely to the creation of the state of Israel but to the Arab blood that was shed in the process of its creation. No mention is made of the massacres of Palestinian civilians of which the most famous one – which remains imbedded in the Palestinian psyche – is the April 9, 1948 massacre at Deir Yassin.
Had Jonas mentioned some of these facts, we may have a better understanding of the situation and of the Arab-Muslim perspective. I felt it was necessary to balance Jonas’ argument by setting the record straight.

The British daily the Financial Times has stressed the Israeli forces have deliberately installed buffer zones in the Palestinian areas with the aim to damage the Palestinian economy and restrict the movement of the Palestinians.
The May 26 article said that the policy of isolating the Palestinians, pursued by Israel is undermining international efforts made to rebuild the cities of the West Bank where great damage was inflected as a result of the recent Israeli invasion.
The paper remarked that Israel is building barbed wire around the cities of the West Bank and Hebron and intensifying military check points at their entrances in order to defuse the Palestinian Intifada and strike the national resistance movements.
The Financial Times said "The Israelis are introducing permits for travel between towns at the same time as the army extends and strengthens the barriers that restrict movement."
Also, the official Palestinian news agency stated last Saturday that: "Israel effectively maintains apartheid-style policies to enforce its control and military occupation and cut the West Bank into eight Bantustans, effectively isolated from one another, with movement control exercised by the Israeli occupation forces. Palestinians needing to travel are required to apply to the Israeli occupation authorities for a special permit to enter or leave a zone. The new permits (or 'passbooks') are only valid from 5.00 am until 7.00 pm and must be renewed every month. This measure resembles the system of "pass laws" as used by the apartheid regime in South Africa, where black South Africans were confined to reserves and their movements restricted to certain places after specified hours under restrictive laws.
"Israel's restrictions on Palestinian movement, its besiegement on Palestinian towns, villages and refugee camps and Israel's closure policy already has had a devastating effect on all aspects of the lives of the Palestinian civilian population, including access to supplies such as food and medicines, humanitarian aid and assistance, hospitals and field clinics, schools, universities, and workplaces, and access to religious sites.
"The Israeli army has literally imprisoned the Palestinian population in restricted areas by the widespread use of trenches, barbed wire, and dirt and concrete blockades that prevent movement outside of towns and villages. "According to the UN Committee Against Torture, Israel's policy of closures may amount to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment in breach of article 16 of the Torture Convention, which Israel ratified in 1991. Moreover, the effects of the apartheid policies imposed by the Israeli occupation authorities on Palestinians violate other legal duties to which Israel is subject, primarily the right to work, the right to health, and the right to education, as they appear in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Additionally, the restrictions are based on racial discrimination. Moreover, the new measures are a clear form of collective punishment, which is absolutely prohibited by the Fourth Geneva Convention.

I don't think it's right to blame the whole Jewish race just like its not right to label all Muslims as terrorist. Just read the papers - retired and resrve Isreali pilots, NS officers and more are willing to risk punishment by speaking out and protesting againts what they feel are cruelties done on to Palestinians by their military. There are also Jewish NGOs who sympathise and are working with Palestinians. I don't think they deserve to be victims of a suicide attack. I don't think anyone desrves that.

The Jewish new year got off to a rousing start in Israel's West Bank. On Friday night, just as a family was beginning its Rosh Hashana celebration, a Palestinian gunman burst into its home and started shooting. The assailant was killed in the melee, but not before he had wounded two people and had taken the lives of a 30-year-old man and a 7-month-old baby girl.
As is their wont, Israeli officials are blaming Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for supporting terrorists and are hinting that they will seek revenge.
"This shows again the ugly face of Palestinian terrorists," said government spokesman Jonathan Peled in a New York Post report. "It shows they are totally oblivious to the sanctity of life, the sanctity of religion."
Pot, meet kettle.
Israel's Ha'aretz provides more details of the tragedy:
The gunman infiltrated the isolated settlement [of Negohot, southwest of Hebron] at around 9:30 P.M., from the northwest, through a part that was not fenced.
Armed with an M-16 assault rifle, he knocked on the door of one of the homes on the edge of the settlement. A 30 year-old man who was visiting at the house opened the door and was critically wounded by the gunman. He died a short time later.
The owner of the house and a soldier opened fire at the gunman, who tried to escape and while fleeing fired a number of rounds at the house, one of which hit and critically wounded a seven-month-old baby who also died a short while later.
An army reserve unit that rushed to the scene killed the gunman.
The wounded - the girl's father and a woman - were taken to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, and the woman has since been released to her home.
No group has yet to claim responsibility for the attack.
Rosh Hashana, a 10-day period which leads up to Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is supposed to be a time for the Jewish people -- which include members of Israel's government -- to reflect on the things they have done wrong and to commit to doing better in the future in hopes of creating a better world. It doesn't appear the Ariel Sharon administration is on the right track here.
As Rabbi Michael Lerner of the pro-peace Tikkun Community notes in his New Year's letter, some Jews -- among them, members of the Israeli government -- are guilty of a number of sins:
* "not publicly criticizing Israel for its unwillingness to end the Occupation of the West Bank and allow the Palestinian people to build their own society
* blaming the entire Palestinian people for the (inexcusable and murderous) acts of a few hundred immoral terrorists, and then inflicting collective punishment on the entire Palestinian people, including denial of food and water, bombings from the sky, assassinations of suspected terrorists that often involve killing dozens of other innocents, house demolitions, and the building of a "security Wall" in the midst of the West Bank (thereby expropriating yet more land)

Rabbi Lerner notes one more sin:
"not standing up for Israel or the Jewish people when it is being unfairly criticized, held to a different standard than everyone else, and not adequately challenging anti-Semitism when it rears its ugly head in the anti-war movement or among those who have legitimate criticisms of Israeli policy but then move beyond that to sweepingly dismiss the rights of the Jewish people, including our right to be just as screwed up as everyone else without being singled out for being worse than we really are."
Indeed. I don't wish to single out Israel's leaders and those citizens who are Zionist-to-a-fault for criticism here, as it is obvious that there are Palestinians who show no respect for human life or for the beautiful spiritual tradition that is Judaism. Examples would be the suicide bombers who plague innocent Israeli people, the assault-gun-wielding gunman who ruined a family's holiday celebration, and Yasser Arafat, who does appear to give at the very least tacit approval to the inhumane terrorist acts committed by a small minority of militant Palestinians. Surely Palestinian leaders and citizens who don't stand against their terrorists have much for which to atone. But Israeli government spokespersons lose credibility when they only point fingers at murderous Palestinian militants.

Former Legal Adviser to the Palestinian Delegation to the Middle East peace negotiations Francis A. Boyle, a professor in International Law, opined in 2001 that the Israel-Palestine conflict is not a symmetrical one, in that Israel's occupation of the West Bank is immoral and illegal. (He defends Palestinian retaliation, saying that "the Palestinian People are defending Themselves and their Land and their Homes against Israeli war crimes and Israeli war criminals, both military and civilian." I agree that Israel's occupation is inhumane, immoral, and illegal, but in my opinion, nothing justifies suicide bombings or the recent Rosh Hashana murders. In fact, I believe Boyle has some atoning to do, as well.)
But the professor notes, correctly, that much blood is on some Israeli
hands:
In operative paragraph 1 of its 19 October 2000 Resolution, the U.N. Human Rights Commission "Strongly condemns the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force in violation of international humanitarian law by the Israeli occupying Power against innocent and unarmed Palestinian civilians ... including many children, in the occupied territories, which constitutes a war crime and a crime against humanity; ..." And in paragraph 5 of its 19 October 2000 Resolution, the U.N. Human Rights Commission "Also affirms that the deliberate and systematic killing of civilians and children by the Israeli occupying authorities constitutes a flagrant and grave violation of the right to life and also constitutes a crime against humanity;...'' Article 68 of the United Nations Charter had expressly required the U.N.'s Economic and Social Council to "set up" this Commission "for the promotion of human rights."
And, he adds,
there are different degrees of heinousness for war crimes. In particular are the more serious war crimes denominated 'grave breaches' of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Since the start of the Al Aqsa Intifada, the world has seen those inflicted every day by Israel against the Palestinian People living in occupied Palestine: e.g., willful killing of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli army and Israel's illegal paramilitary settlers. These Israeli 'grave breaches' of the Fourth Geneva Convention mandate universal prosecution for their perpetrators, whether military or civilian, as well as prosecution for their commanders, whether military or civilian, including Israel's political leaders.
Boyle concludes,
In fairness, you will note that the U.N. Human Rights Commission did not go so far as to condemn Israel for committing genocide against the Palestinian People. But it has condemned Israel for committing crimes against humanity, which is the direct precursor to genocide. And I submit that if something is not done quite soon by the American People and the International Community to stop Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Palestinian People, it could very well degenerate into genocide, if Israel is not there already. And in this regard, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is what international lawyers call a genocidaire--one who has already committed genocide in the past.
Global human-rights organization Amnesty International, unlike Boyle, has no dog in this race. In July 2002, the London-based group released a report critical of Palestinian terrorists in which it stated,
"The attacks against civilians by Palestinian armed groups are widespread, systematic and in pursuit of an explicit policy to attack civilians. ... They constitute crimes against humanity ... They may also constitute war crimes."
Not surprisingly, Palestinian officials dismissed the report as biased and unbalanced. But Amnesty, in numerous documents, including a June 2003 press release, points its finger at the Israeli government too:
In the past two and half years the Israeli army has killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and Palestinian armed groups have killed more than 700 Israelis. Most of those killed were civilians and included some 350 Palestinian children and more than 90 Israeli children. ...
The Israeli army has also destroyed more than 3,000 Palestinian homes, vast areas of cultivated land, and hundreds of commercial and public properties. Prolonged and disproportionate closures and curfews imposed by the Israeli army throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip have impeded or prevented Palestinians' access to medical care, education and work. Poverty, unemployment and health problems, including malnutrition, have spiraled as a result.
The spread of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip continues and the measures taken by Israel purportedly to protect the freedom of movement of Israeli settlers, whose presence in the Occupied Territories violates international law, have resulted in increasingly widespread abuses of the local Palestinian population's human rights.
"The Israeli government and army must stop imposing collective punishment against Palestinians," the organization said.
The recent violent break of the truce between Israel and Palestine and the resignation of pro-peace Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas make the road to conflict resolution increasingly bumpy and treacherous. If peace is to be achieved, it is crucial that Amnesty International's advice is followed: "Israeli and Palestinian sides must put an end to killings and other attacks against civilians."
Before that will happen, I suggest that everyone open themselves up to the message of Rosh Hashana: Look backward at one's sins. Look ahead to what one can do to atone for past sins and work to create a better world -- a world of peace, justice, and mutual respect.
