SPAN: Don't make unilateral decision on water rationing
PETALING JAYA: State water concessionaires have been reminded not to make a unilateral decision on water rationing.
Energy, Green Technology and Water Min-istry said they needed to get approval from the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) before carrying out any water rationing.
In a statement yesterday, the ministry said SPAN could instruct concessionaires to conduct water rationing if supply in a state reached the critical level.
It said water concessionaires could also seek SPAN’s approval to implement rationing but they needed to justify it and include contingency plans that cover management strategies, ration schedule, communication plans and other mitigative steps.
“Although water levels at most dams and rivers are dipping, the water supply condition in most states is still under control.
“So far, only Syarikat Air Johor Holdings (SAJH) has been given approval to conduct water rationing for the Kluang district. Besides that, Negri Sembilan and Selangor are also under observation following low levels at the dams and rivers,” said the statement.
SAJH has been rationing water in Kluang since Feb 18 following low level at the Sembrong Kiri river, which affects production at the Sembrong Timur treatment plant.
The process involves scheduled water supply for 51,036 accounts, under which residents will receive uninterrupted supply for two days followed by rationing for a day.
SPAN said that the water supply conditions in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur were being monitored as dam levels were still low and two treatment plants – in Cheras Batu 11 and Bukit Tampoi – remained closed.
In Negri Sembilan, SPAN said the situation was still under control and rationing was not necessary yet.
The dry spell has caused water shortages in Selangor and, more recently, Negri Sembilan. |

Undangan Negeri Balakong, Eddie Ng Tien Chee mendakwa penghantaran lori tangki
- Bernama

Pembazir air paling banyak:-
Penang tops the list for being the highest water consumer in the country for last year at 299 litres per person as compared to the national average of 215, this is despite the PBAPP imposing a Water Conservation Surcharge (WCS) to penalise consumers who waste water. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.co ... thash.W7bZMWX7.dpuf |

GEORGE TOWN - Penang may experience water rationing if the Air Itam dam falls to 40% of capacity with the water supply to last only for 43 days at that level.
Chief Minister and Penang Water Supply Corporation Lim Guan Eng said the dam would reach the 40% level if there was no rain at the catchment area for the next 30 days.
He said the water level at the dam was currently at 71% capacity but was dropping fast.
Lim said the corporation was trying to maintain the reserve capacity to last another 90 days by bringing in water from the mainland.
"Consumers should not waste water by washing cars or gardening," he said in a statement today.
Nonetheless, he said the corporation was ready to face the seasonal dry spell at the beginning of the year by ensuring all three dams in Penang were at the maximum level in January.
He said the water level at the Mengkuang dam was at 50.5% which was enough for 84 days and Teluk Bahang dam at 91% which was sufficient for 277 days.
"There is no need for water rationing now," he said but stressed that water should not be wasted. - Sundaily
