For most couples, the holiday season is a time to exchange gifts, gorge themselves silly and watch Christmas movies -- together. But this Christmas, Jennifer Lopez will have no one to stand under the mistletoe with: Fiance Ben Affleck will be traveling to the war-torn Middle East to entertain U.S. troops serving in the region. While there, he'll host a screening of his new action thriller, Paycheck, which opens in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

Do we detect a pattern? On her 34th birthday last July, Jen was also left to celebrate without Ben on the Canadian set of her movie, Shall We Dance? Two months later, Ben nixed their Sept. 14 wedding day, according to insiders. Now, he's leaving her to sip her eggnog by herself on Christmas Eve.

To add insult to injury, a source tells Star, Jen only found out about the trip when it broke in the newspapers last week! "She truly believed they were going to spend the holidays together," a source close to Lopez says. "Of course she was upset, but he told her it was something he had to do for the movie." What he didn't tell her was that he was the one who asked to go to the Middle East.

According to John Hanson, a USO spokesperson, Ben was scheduled to arrive in the Mideast via Bahrain, home of the Navy's Mideast headquarters, and not expected home until the night of Dec. 25, if not later. "Ben contacted us a few weeks ago and asked if he could do something special for the troops over the holidays," Hanson tells Star.

J.Lo's mother, Guadalupe, has mixed feelings about his mission. "She's proud of Ben for helping the troops," says a source close to her, "but she also wishes J.Lo wouldn't be home alone on Christmas Eve. She wants her daughter to be happy -- especially over the holidays."

Affleck may be going with good intentions, but the result should also give an amazing public relations boost to Paycheck. He's already hit the talk show circuit, but nothing can compare to the popularity bump that comes from standing in front of cheering U.S. troops.

Hanson, the USO spokesman, thinks that Ben's motives are less cynical. "Ben can spend his Christmas wherever he wants," he notes, "but the troops have no choice. It's just his way of saying 'thank you.'"

Ben Affleck is so fed up with the wedding gossip surrounding him and J.Lo that he's decided to get hitched to best pal Matt Damon instead! Joker Ben, 31, had journalists in stitches when he was asked if he'll finally marry Lopez in the new year in Savannah, Ga. "OK, I'm going to answer this question because it's important," he said. "Now that it's legal in Massachusetts, Matt and I have agreed to get married in Provincetown on New Year's Day." Asked if J.Lo would be the maid of honor he quipped, "I don't know. In a partnership ceremony do you have a maid of honor?"

IT seems Ben Affleck's gambling habit is contagious - and has spread to his lady Jennifer Lopez.

J-Lo, 34, had told Ben to curb his casino habit or face ruining their relationship. But she seems to have changed her mind and is taking a sporting interest.

The couple, who are holidaying in Las Vegas, were spotted playing a game of all-night poker at the Hard Rock Hotel where they are staying.

For once Lady Luck smiled on J-Lo and she won a big hand. After all the duff movies she released last year, her winning streak had to start sometime. However, Ben doesn't look as if he's on a role at all!

The second annual "ET Hot List" ranks celebrities by their number of mentions on "Entertainment Tonight" during the last year and Jennifer Lopez usurps the throne of 2002's leader, Jennifer Aniston, who falls to No. 2.

Michael Jackson follows close behind, with "Paycheck" star Ben Affleck and Golden Globe nominee Nicole Kidman rounding out the top 5.

"It has been an incredibly eventful year of weddings, almost weddings, sex scandals, animal attacks and celebrity deaths," says Linda Bell Blue, executive producer of "ET."

Ever since Sean "P.Diddy" Combs bought a sprawling Miami mansion last month, he and Jennifer Lopez have been spending time together -- and on Jan. 11, they were virtually inseparable, according to an eyewitness.

J.Lo flew into Miami that evening around 11 p.m. then went to the Opium Garden in South Beach with her entourage. P. Diddy and posse popped in at 1:30 a.m., joining J.Lo in the VIP section, my source tells me. At one point, a male tourist created a melee when he tried to snap a photo of them: Someone grabbed the man's camera and a huge kerfuffle ensued, according to an eyewitness. But after the situation settled, the ex-couple huddled back in the corner, deep in conversation until after 4 a.m.

My sources tell me P. Diddy has also been checking in on Jen's home when she's away. This may seem suspicious to outsiders, but it's no surprise to me, since P. Diddy told me last month how he feels about her: "I want the best for Jennifer," he said. "I mean, she's my girl... my homegirl."

Ben and Jen have come to an end.

A publicist for Jennifer Lopez tells The Associated Press that she has broken off her engagement to Hollywood hunk Ben Affleck. And this time, it appears it's for good.

Affleck's camp isn't saying much. Publicist Ken Sunshine says his office doesn't comment on the private matters of its clients.

The two some have been under constant media scrutiny for the past year and a half.

They were supposed to tie the knot last September. But they abruptly put off those plans citing "excessive media attention."

They appeared together in the romantic comedy "Gigli" last year. It proved to be a bomb. They'll be on screen again in "Jersey Girl," which is due out in March.

The new Us Weekly pegs Tuesday as the exact day that Bennifer became undone.

The magazine, which Thursday broke the story of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's split, describes the separation as a mutual decision.

But it also cites a source as saying Lopez, now sans her 6.1-carat engagement ring, "was tired of waiting for him (Affleck) to come around."

The 33-year-old Wedding Planner star was said to be eager for marriage and a baby. The 32-year-old Affleck was said not to be.
