buku 1 - The Maze Runner

Thomas arrives in a place known as the Glade, left with no memories except his name. He meets other teenage boys called Gladers who have created a community. Each Glader is assigned to a task in different departments headed by a Keeper. Shortly after arrival, Thomas gets a tour by Alby, the oldest and the leader, and some other Gladers.

A gigantic maze surrounds the Glade. Inside, mechanical creatures called Grievers roam it at night. The huge doors into the maze close at sunset and reopen in the morning. Every month supplies are sent, and a new boy arrives in an elevator called, "the Box," It is the same elevator Thomas arrived in. There are also Beetle Blades, mechanical bugs which spy on the Gladers, with "W.C.K.E.D." (World in Castastrophe - Killzone Experiment Department) written on them.

After Thomas arrives, an unconscious girl arrives carrying a note reading, "She's the last one." She is taken to the infirmary to recover from a coma before being questioned. Meanwhile, Thomas learns that the Gladers have unsuccessfully been trying to solve the Maze for two years, and that the antidote to a Griever sting revives small bits of memory. Chuck (a twelve year old boy), and Newt (the Gladers' second-in-command), befriend Thomas. Gladers exploring the Maze are called "Runners." Minho, the Keeper of the Runners, and Alby, the Gladers' leader, search for a dead Griever that Minho found while running the maze the day before. However, the Griever is found to be not dead and it stings Alby. Minho struggles to carry Alby back to the Glade, but as the doors close on them, Thomas runs into the Maze to help.

Hearing approaching Grievers, Minho leaves Thomas with an unconscious Alby. Thomas saves Alby and, finding Minho, tricks pursuing Grievers into falling off "the cliff" (an abyss within the Maze). Minho and Thomas return to the Glade as the doors open the next morning.

As the acting leader, Newt calls a "Gathering" to decide Thomas's fate for entering the Maze without permission. It is decided to make Thomas a Runner after serving one day in "the Slammer" (jail).

The day after, Thomas joins Minho running the Maze. They quickly discover a "Griever Hole" through a cliff, exposing the outside world. He also discovers words covered in vines that say, "World in Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department", assuming that WICKED is the acronym.

After returning to the Glade, Thomas is shocked that the girl speaks telepathically to him. Her name is Teresa, and she says she has triggered an "Ending." Soon afterward, Teresa awakes and befriends Thomas. The same day, the sky turns a dull gray, which Thomas attributes to the Creators of the Glade. That night, the Maze doors remain open, leaving the Gladers unprotected from the Grievers. The Grievers start taking one person each night. Alby also burns down the map room, but Minho and the other Runners had moved all the maps to a secret room. The Gladers align the maps, which spell out words. They have no relation to each other, and the Gladers determine it is a code.

Desperate to retrieve his lost memories, Thomas allows a Griever to sting him. After recovering, Thomas explains that he and Teresa were forced to help the Creators design the Maze. He says he and Teresa share a telepathic link. The way out of the Maze is over a cliff face and that it is an illusion to trick them. This is where the Grievers enter and exit the Maze. By following the Grievers, they can escape by punching the code words into a computer on the other side. Thomas leads the Gladers into the Maze and they confront a small army of Grievers. About half the Gladers die, but Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck escape down the hole and punch in the code and shut down the Maze. A door opens nearby.

The 21 remaining Gladers descend down a spiraling slide that dumps them into a massive underground bunker. There they meet the Creators: thin, pale, joyless adults who take copious notes while observing them from behind glass. A woman greets the Gladers, telling them they have done well. Gally appears and throws a knife at Thomas. Chuck steps in front of it, sacrificing his life to save him. Enraged, Thomas attacks Gally and knocks him unconscious.

Suddenly, a group of gunmen storm the room and shoot the woman and the Creators. The Gladers are taken out of this facility and put into a large bus. As they are boarding, a hideously scarred woman grabs Thomas and tells him that he is here to save everyone from the Flare before the driver runs her over. Thomas and Teresa learn from a rescuer that the world was ravaged after solar flares slammed Earth, killing millions within days, leaving the world a wasteland. A disease known as the Flare now threatens humanity. The group's goal is to stop the tests WICKED is doing, and find the cure for the Flare.

After two hours, the bus stops at a dormitory-like building. Inside, the Gladers find bunk beds with blankets, bathrooms, and food. They finally feel safe. Thomas drifts off to sleep feeling there is hope for the future.

In an epilogue, it is suggested that the apparent rescue of the Gladers is yet another test masterminded by the Creators of the Maze and that the one Thomas escaped is not the only one WICKED have been observing.

buku2 - The Scorch Trials

Plot

The book starts in the middle of the night when Thomas wakes up and cannot get back to sleep. He calls Teresa's name telepathically. After a while, Thomas finally falls asleep. Teresa calls out to him telepathically, but cannot seem to get Thomas's attention. He wakes up to seeing everyone panicking about Cranks, people infected with the Flare, outside their door. Thomas and the rest of the Gladers go around to investigate, and find that the room in which they'd eaten pizza with the people who rescued them is locked. They ram the door down and turn on the lights to find the bodies of their rescuers hanging from the ceiling. They enter Teresa's room, which is empty except for a boy named Aris, who's from Group B. He can also talk telepathically and even had a telepathy partner named Rachel, who was killed just like Gally had killed Chuck in the first book. Outside of the room is a plaque that says "Teresa Agnes. Group A, Subject A1. The Betrayer." An alarm, similar to the one on the Glade, goes off and the room door locks until the alarm stops. Thomas opens the door to find no dead bodies. Even the plaque is changed to "Aris Jones, Group B, Subject B1. The Partner."

Next they find a man sitting in the middle of the next room who they call Rat Man. He tells them they are to make their way through the Scorch, a burned out section of the land. As an incentive, they've all caught the Flare and will receive a cure when they reach their destination. Shortly after he leaves, the Gladers discover tattoos on the back of their necks: Newt's says he's "The Glue", Minho's says "The Leader", and Thomas' says 'To be killed by Group B". The Gladers enter a Flat Trans and wander through darkness for about an hour, when they hear strange whispers. Two boys get killed by molten steel balls that cover then decapitate their victims before they roll away. Winston gets attacked too, but Thomas manages to save him. They enter the Scorch, eventually come to a building in which they had heard screaming. Teresa exits the building, and Thomas senses a trap when he approaches her. Teresa is crying, telling him to get away from her. She kisses him and tells him to tell the Gladers to get as far away from her as possible.

Thomas and the Gladers hike towards a city to stock back up on supplies, along the way, he has another "memory dream" where Teresa and Thomas practice talking telepathically. A storm soon hits, killing off seven boys, including Winston. They stay inside a building when a Crank named Jorge welcomes them into the Crank House. Minho insults him and Jorge kicks him twice in a place where he was burnt from getting struck by lightning. Minho attacks Jorge and all the Cranks from upstairs come down. Fortunately, Thomas negotiates a deal with Jorge, keeping the Gladers from getting killed. Thomas meets Brenda, who becomes very forward when he first meets her. They go downstairs and eat, when the roof collapses, separating Thomas and Brenda from the others.

The two of them walk through the Underneath and fight some Cranks. Eventually, they make it onto the surface and sleep in a truck. Thomas wakes up from a nightmare and goes back to sleep. He has another dream memory where he and Teresa are listening in on a conversation between WICKED employees. Thomas wakes up again and sees words printed on a brick saying "Thomas, you're the real leader." They leave the car and are forced into a club by a few strangers. They dance to the music and are forced to swallow drinks that make them feel dizzy. Brenda tries to kiss Thomas, but he says "You're not...her." and "You could never be her."

They wake up in a dark room with the 4 strangers who took them to the club. They are about to kill them when Minho and the other Gladers save them. While fleeing the strangers, a man that Thomas calls "Blondie" shoots Thomas in the left shoulder with a rusty bullet, giving him an infection. After the Gladers fail to heal Thomas, WICKED goes down and gets him in a machine called a Berg. While being healed, he overhears one of the worker's conversations in which a woman stated that he wasn't supposed to get shot. He's taken back to where he came from, and he explains everything to the Gladers.

Later, Thomas hears Teresa's voice in his head, warning him that something terrible will happen, leaving him hurt and scared. And he had to trust her no matter what. She pauses and says that he won't hear from her for a while until they're back together. Newt and Thomas talk about how WICKED only made an exception for him and no one else. They see Teresa and Group B walking towards Group A with weapons. She hits Thomas multiple times with the butt of her spear and drags him back to their base. Thomas is fed once they get there and falls asleep, having another memory dream. The next morning the girls decided not to kill him. Thomas and the girls get about 7 miles away from the "safe haven" when Teresa motions for Thomas to follow her.

Aris appears and holds a knife to Thomas's back and leads him into a cave. Thomas sees a glowing green door, which he thinks could mean that there is radioactive substance inside. Teresa reveals that she and Aris had a relationship both before and during the Maze and the Scorch Trials. She also said that she manipulated Thomas to escape the Maze. Teresa holds Aris and kiss right in front of Thomas who felt betrayed. Betrayal and anger overpower Thomas' feelings towards Teresa. They lead him through the door and into a gas chamber. Thomas attacks Aris and Teresa, but does not succeed. Gas is then released and Thomas passes out. While knocked out, Thomas has another dream of one of his memories about being sent into the Swipe, then into the Maze. Thomas wakes up, and then the gas chamber opens. Aris and Teresa then enter and begin to explain everything and how their betrayal was not real. Teresa apologizes, but Thomas still won't trust her. He takes his chances and joins them both as they run to catch up with the other groups, as they only have a few hours until they must be at the safe haven. Teresa explains along the way that her telepathy with Thomas was "cut off" when WICKED came into her room and told her to tell Aris that they had to get Thomas to the point that he feels totally betrayed by them, and if they did anything against WICKED, Thomas dies. They kiss near a valley, but Thomas feels nothing, clearly indicating that their relationship will not be the same from there on.

They make it to the safe haven, but monsters with bulbs all over their bodies appear out of strange pods and start engaging both groups and then they begin to fight. Three people die in the fight. The Berg comes back and picks up the Gladers. A guard on it gets angry for them taking Jorge and Brenda with them, forcing Thomas to choose whom to kill. He chooses Brenda, thinking it's a test, but he's wrong. He manages to keep both. They're fed and bathed and all fall asleep. Thomas has one more dream where Brenda speaks to him telepathically, saying things are about to get bad. He wakes up in a padded white room. Teresa is telepathically speaking to him, saying the Flare was rooted too deeply in him, and they took him away. Thomas, who feels betrayed, decides not to trust Teresa anymore after all the lies that she had said. Telepathically, he finds courage and tells Teresa, "Teresa. Go away." Words that he could not have said aloud. Teresa agrees and tells him one final thing, "WICKED is good" and stops all telepathy.
Characters

Thomas: The protagonist, a teenage boy who was a Runner in the Glade. He discovered that he had a part in helping WICKED and building the Maze when he was stung by a griever. He has the ability to speak telepathically with Aris and Teresa. The tattoo on the back of his neck that was given to him by WICKED researchers says, "To be killed by Group B". Thomas struggles with many conflicts throughout the book, such as becoming the real leader, being betrayed by Teresa, and most importantly, SURVIVING THE SCORCH. This causes him to become confused, hurt, and betrayed.
Newt: An English boy with long blonde hair. He was the leader of the Gladers while in the maze after the former leader Alby died in the first novel. He has a slight limp, and is Thomas's and Minho's friend. The tattoo on the back of his neck designates him as "The Glue".
Minho: A Korean American boy who was the Keeper of the Runners in the Glade. He is snarky, aggressive, and stubborn which gets him in trouble frequently. He is friends with Newt and Thomas. The tattoo on the back on his neck shows that WICKED intended for him to be "The Leader"
Brenda: A girl from Canada who has turned almost full crank. Both Jorge and herself help lead the Gladers through the Scorch, but Brenda mostly leads Thomas after they become separated from the rest of the group. She looks up to Jorge as a father.
Aris Jones: Another boy who was involved with WICKED before the maze. He spent the first novel with Group B. He can speak telepathically with Thomas and Teresa. His best friend - Rachel - was killed when Group B escaped their maze. The tattoo on his neck designates him as "The Partner".
Teresa Agnes: Thomas's best friend before the Glade. She can speak telepathically with Thomas and Aris. She spends much of the novel with Group B, whom she becomes the leader of. She becomes under control of WICKED at times, which makes it difficult for Thomas to trust her. She was to be known as the "The Betrayer".
Jorge Gallaparga: A man who presents himself as the leader of the Cranks. He appears to be dangerous and psychotic, yet also humorous. He is a father figure to Brenda.
Sonya: A past leader of Group B.
Harriet: A past leader of Group B.
Rat Man(Dr. Janson): The first researcher to present himself to the group.
Rachel: She played the same role as Thomas, but in Group B. She was killed as Group B was escaping their maze.
Frypan: The cook for the Gladers in Group A.
Winston: The keeper of the Slicers in Group A, responsible for killing the livestock for food.

book 3 -The Death Cure

Plot

Protagonist Thomas is held in solitary confinement, but is eventually released. He and some others soon learn from Assistant Director Janson that the claim of a cure for the Flare (a deadly disease) was a lie. However, while many of the people present are immune, not all are, and many in the outside world despise the immune. The Gladers are offered the chance to restore their memories, and it is also revealed that the controlling device in their brains will be removed in the process. This means that Thomas, Teresa, and Aris will no longer be able to communicate telepathically. Most accept the procedure except Thomas, Minho, and Newt, who are later forced into the process but escape with the help of Brenda. It is revealed that Newt is not immune to the Flare.

After narrowly escaping an attack, the group flies to Denver, with Jorge as the pilot, in the hopes of meeting a former WICKED neurologist, Hans. In Denver, their comrade Gally tells them about an anti-WICKED organization, called the 'Right Arm'. They find Hans, and WICKED attempts to control Thomas to kill him, but Brenda and Minho stop him, and Hans frees Thomas from control. Later, Thomas discovers that Newt has been taken to a Crank sanctuary (housing those driven insane by the Flare), and Newt refuses to return. Thomas and his group are caught in a Crank riot but escape, and Thomas reads Newt's letter, in which Newt begs Thomas to euthanize him. Thomas and the others are captured by bounty hunters, but convince their kidnappers to take them to the headquarters of the Right Arm, where they meet Vince, the group's leader. Plans are made to infiltrate WICKED headquarters. Thomas has previously been invited back to participate in the third phase of the Trials, so he agrees to plant the device allowing the Right Arm into the building. While driving to the building, Thomas spots Newt. Newt attacks Thomas and yells that it's all his fault that he limps and that he tried to commit suicide, because Thomas helped W.I.C.K.E.D and put Newt in the Maze. Newt begs Thomas to shoot him, so he will not turn into a Crank. Thomas ends up shooting him and leaves him. He runs away with closed eyes because he can't see what he just did to his best friend.

Thomas plants the device, but is told by Janson that he is the Final Candidate, whose brain shall be removed to collect the final data for a cure to the Flare. Thomas later discovers that Janson is suffering from the Flare and is eager for Thomas' operation to save himself. Just before the operation, Thomas, and hundreds of other immunes, are saved by Chancellor Ava Paige, WICKED's leader, who provides several maps for a series of escape routes.

Thomas, Minho, Teresa, Gally and Brenda go underground to the Mazes, where the new round of Immunes are being kept. They collect the people as the Right Arm detonates their explosives, causing the underground caverns to begin to collapse. As they reach the Flat Trans to escape, Janson and several others appear and attempt to capture Thomas, but Thomas manages to strangle and kill Janson. By this time the explosives have reached the storage room, where Thomas stood. Still dazed after killing Janson, Thomas fails to react when the ceiling was falling about to crush him. Teresa pushes Thomas out of the way of a falling piece of concrete and traps herself instead. The weight of the concrete eventually kills Teresa. The survivors cross the Flat Trans into the green wilderness. After reaching their destination, Brenda tells Thomas that although the cure could not be found, they have everyone else to repopulate the world, and they kiss. In the epilogue, Ava Paige laments that a cure for the Flare was never discovered, the Immunes will be able to restart civilization, that the plague had been deliberately released to control the population, and that Jorge and Brenda were "two carefully placed agents".

novel 4 - The Kill Order (thirteen years before the events of maze runner)

Plot

Set thirteen years before the events of The Maze Runner, the novel chronologically begins in New York City when the world is hit by solar flares. Mark and Trina form an alliance with Alec, Lana and others who rescue them from a group of street urchins. The group flees to the Lincoln building to avoid an impending tsunami, and most manage to survive although some of their group are lost along the way. They camp out in the building for weeks until a yacht arrives and the ship's crew takes them hostage and kills one of them. Alec manages to take out their captors and they take the yacht as their own. Then they pilot the boat to the Appalachian Mountains.

The beginning of the novel takes place in North Carolina one year later, when the small village where Mark, Trina, Alec and Lana live is attacked by huge helicopter-like vehicles, known as Bergs. The crew of the Berg showers them with darts, killing some of them. Mark and Alec manage to subdue and take over a Berg, then they crash it at a distance. Mark and Alec realize that the darts were filled with a deadly virus. The group encounters a village where they meet a 5 year-old girl named Deedee, whom they take along with them. As Mark and Alec leave the group for a while, they encounter an infected cult who believe Deedee is a demon of some sort, as she is believed to be immune from the virus darts. They manage to escape the cult, but they realize that a forest fire has been triggered and that Trina, Deedee and Lana are gone from the campsite. They continue their trek to the safe haven, thinking that the three girls are there.

They arrive at the site and sneak in to what appears to be the Post-Flares Coalition's (PFC) base. They sneak in and eavesdrop on a convention and realize that the virus is widely known as The Flare, a virus that shuts down the thinking-part of people's brains. They also learn that the girls were given back to the cult. They are caught eavesdropping and manage to escape and steal a Berg, before Mark realizes that The Flare has already taken his mind. Inside the Berg, Mark and Alec find a Transvice, a gun that evaporates people's molecules. They recharge it in order to use it to battle the infected.

Their journey inside the Berg takes them to Asheville, where they find Lana. Lana was badly tortured by the infected, leading Alec to fight the infected. He is forced to kill Lana using the Transvice to end her suffering. They find Trina and Deedee at an old house, where Mark realizes Trina has the Flare and has forgotten about him. They are attacked by the infected and manage to escape back to the Berg, with Mark realizing that Deedee is immune to the virus. Mark plans on delivering Deedee to the Flat Trans in Alaska. They camp out on their journey and continue, as it is revealed that Alec also has the Flare.

Mark and Trina manage to deliver Deedee to the Flat Trans before Mark orders Alec to crash the Berg into the building. Mark and Trina embrace, leaving the world together as they chose to die, with the Berg crashing in the building, killing three of them.

In the epilogue, two years later, a woman's son is taken away from her by authorities from W.I.C.K.E.D., as he is immune to the virus. The employees name him Thomas. Deedee is renamed Teresa, and Teresa is arranged by W.I.C.K.E.D. to meet Thomas, as they will help set up the maze in the future.

In the Prologue, taking place eleven years later, Thomas is ordered to get the Swipe and put in The Box, as he is one of the candidates needed inside. Thomas is then sent to the maze, setting the events of The Maze Runner in motion.

novel 5 -2016

The Fever Code is the fifth book in the science fiction series, The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner.

Of the novel, Dashner said that he always wanted to write about how the rest of the Gladers got to the maze and what they did before Thomas entered the box,[1] therefore the book is set in a time before The Maze Runner and after The Kill Order.

who teressa

    "WICKED is good."
    — Teresa

Teresa Agnes (originally named Deedee) was a Glader and a creator of the Maze with Thomas; said to be named after Mother Teresa.
In The Kill Order, a year after the Sun Flares, Deedee was living in a village with a large group of people, including her parents and brother Ricky. When The Flare began to spread, everyone in her village shunned and abandoned her when they found out she was immune to the virus, believing her to be a demon of some sort. In the end, Teresa told Thomas that her original name was Deedee.

Minho is described by Thomas as an Asian with strong arms and short, black hair, who looked to be a little older than him. He is aggressive, tough, and loyal, and uses sarcasm a lot. Also noted to have one of the best senses of humor amongst the Gladers. Minho also likes to have the last word. His name was mentioned in an interview with the author, James Dashner, and he said it is a reference to a possible future scientist.

World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department, generally abbreviated to WICKED (WCKD in the movie adaptation), is an organization originally formed to find a cure for The Flare. After the Sun Flares, the remaining governments of the world combined their resources to set this organization up, for the world was in desperate need for a cure. For the purpose of experimenting, they selected about a hundred children between the age of 12 and 17, many of whom were immune to the Flare. They passed them through The Trials, such as the Maze and the Scorch, which involved various variables which were designed to stimulate the Killzone of the brain so they could record specific patterns. They planned to use these killzone patterns to discover why these children's brains were able to fight off the Flare, hopefully allowing them to produce a cure. Thomas, Teresa, Aris, and Rachel are all WICKED members that went through the trials.

Throughout the series, Teresa Agnes and Ava Paige frequently mention that WICKED is good, implying that every action or intention WICKED does is justified. This oxymoron is a prime example of doublethink, and serves as a type of propaganda tool for WICKED. Of course, as seen throughout the series, WICKED is indeed wicked, with the organization performing very few good deeds. Towards the end of the series Teresa finally realizes that WICKED is not really good at all, but Chancellor Paige still clings to the idea.

In The Kill Order, Mark reads messages between members of the Post-Flare Coalition, a government organization of sun flare survivors. He learns of a secret branch, the Population Control Committee who release the Flare due to limited resources and increased population. It can be assumed that these organizations are precursors to WICKED as Chancellor Paige admits WICKED released the Flare for means of population control.

WICKED's ultimate fate is unknown, although it is safe to assume that WICKED is destroyed by The Right Arm during their attack in The Death Cure.
