A sex education show, perhaps the first of its kind in Malaysia, will be aired online.

Directed at teenagers, Popek-Popek (meaning "talking" in colloquial Malay) aims to promote understanding in a subject normally considered as taboo here.

Aired by web TV network PopTeeVee, it will be hosted by sex health educator June Low and performance artiste Sudarshan, and will be in Bahasa Malaysia.

Low, who also writes for the show told The Star that Malaysian sex education focused on abstinence, which she said didn't work.

"Comprehensive sex ed has been proven to help teens delay sexual activity, avoid risky behaviour and increase safe sex."

"So that is what we want to do. We want to give people real information when it comes to their sexual health," she said on Sunday.

"Believing that Malaysian teens were capable of making their own informed decisions on sex provided they had the right guidance," she said the show would be more relatable than an American-based programme."

Low added that the show would also double as a question-and-answer platform, with questions asked in the comments to be covered in the next episode.
