KUALA LUMPUR: Sebuah gerabak tren Transit Aliran Ringan (LRT) terbakar berhampiran Stesen Setiawangsa, pagi tadi dipercayai akibat masalah brek.

Penolong Pengarah Operasi Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Kuala Lumpur, Azizah Ismail berkata ketika anggota bomba di tempat kejadian mendapati asap tebal memenuhi ruang di salah satu daripada empat gerabah tren berkenaan.

"Ketika bomba tiba, gerabak sudah dikosongkan dan kereta api itu digerakkan ke lokasi landasan yang lebih selamat oleh petugas LRT.

"Siasatan awal mendapati kebakaran berpunca daripada masalah brek. Api dapat dikawal dalam masa tiga minit dan padam sepenuhnya kira-kira 20 minit kemudian," katanya. -

KUALA LUMPUR, 22 Julai – Rapid Rail wishes to apologise to its customers for inconvenience caused resulting from two incidents of braking failures of the Kelana Jaya LRT four-car trains today. We have highlighted this subject of the four-car trains’brake failure to the public in February and what happened today is actually is a continuation of the same problem.

We have been asked train manufacturer – Bombardier and Knorr Brake Company, in search of a solution to this brake failure challenge, which had been highlighted to them since early this year. Both Bombardier and Knorr Brake Company have acknowledged that there is a design issue.

While working for a long term solution, our engineers have been attending to the brake callipers of the existing 35 four-car trains in replacing the brake seals. As of today, some 40 percent of the 560 units of brake callipers have been fitted with new brake seals. This is, however, only a containment measure as Bombardier and Knorr Brake Company come out with a permanent solution.

This issue has resulted in lower number of serviceable train in a number of occasions over the last few months. Since identified, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has been conducting special checks on the brake systems of the Kelana Jaya Line LRT trains to mitigate the challenges. Additional roving technicians are also being deployed on the ground to ensure swift response in the event of service interruption.

Being a fail-safe system, any brake failure will result to the train to stop, and this had resulted in service interruption and caused inconvenience to the customers as the train would need to be rescued and sent to the nearest stabling track.

While facing this challenge, the safety of passengers is never compromised. We had two instances of the brake failure today with the first incident involving a Gombak-bound train at Station Titiwangsa at 8.19am. Service was disrupted until 8.45am.

The second incident involved another Gombak-bound near Universiti Station 12.18pm. A total of 53 passengers was transferred to a rescue train. Service resumed normalcy at 12.35pm by using alternate track.

We noted that there were sparks of fire resulting from the brake dragging issue. The liquid discharged due to leakage will cause excessive smoke when hitting the hot iron track. It should be noted that any occurrence of fire is not immediate. The train would have stopped and a rescue team would be immediately dispatched to commence efforts to evacuate the passengers.

In today’s incident, all passengers were already transferred to rescue train when the brief fire occurred. Both fires were put off by Rapid Rail rescue team members by using fire extinguishers in the trains.
