IPTS berstatus Universiti Swasta menjurus Perubatan & Sains Kesihatan Siri 2

  • Universiti Perubatan Antarabangsa (International Medical University - IMU)
  • Universiti Perdana
  • Universiti ''Asian Institute of Medical, Science & Technology'' (AIMST)
  • Universiti MAHSA
  • Universiti Metropolitan Asia (AMU)

Private Universities Specialised in Medical & Health Sciences Part 2

With the establishment of more private education institution
in early 2000s, a number of private colleges specialised allied health sciences field started to attract enrollment from SPM school leavers who are looking for courses related to medical & health sciences. With the setting up of International Medical University (IMU), other private medical colleges which focused their strength in medical courses is being upgraded to full-fledged Universities, the likes of MAHSA group of colleges & Masterskill (now known as AMU). Private Universities that specialised with more than 70 - 90% courses offered for medical & health sciences courses become top pickings amongst SPM / STPM school leavers who didn't get enrolled to medical courses in public universities due to limited placement.

List of Private Universities Specialised in Medical & Health Sciences Part 2:

  • International Medical University (IMU)
  • Perdana University
  • Asian Institute of Medical, Science & Technology University (AIMST)
  • MAHSA University
  • Asia Metropolitan University (AMU)

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY (IMU)

HISTORY OF IMU

27 years ago, it was clear that Malaysia was facing a serious shortage of doctors. Dr Kamal Salih, a visionary, and Dr Mei Ling Young, a social scientist with a strong interest in development, hit on a brilliant, simple idea – if young Malaysian students could not go out into the world to get the medical education they wanted and deserved, they would bring it to them.

And so the idea for the International Medical College (IMC) was born.
Kamal and Mei Ling roped in Dr Saidi Hashim, who had helped start the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)’s Medical School and Professor Ong Kok Hai, also a USM colleague, to help put the plan for the school together. They in turn invited two leading medical educationists – Professor Ron Harden and Professor Ian Hart to join the team.

The six of them then put together a unique model that would see medical students spend the first 5 semesters at the International Medical College (IMC) in Kuala Lumpur, before moving to any one of the Partner Medical Schools (PMS) around the world. It was a radical idea – a world’s first – that changed the model for medical education. And in the process, helped build a better Malaysia.

The IMC curriculum was unique not just in its teaching and learning methods, but also in the fact that it was designed to be universally accepted as a Phase 1 by some of the world’s best medical schools. And its unique Self-directed Learning approach taught students to break away from teacher-dependent learning and to be responsible for their own learning.

In November 1992 – after only 2 years of intense planning and with five leading PMS on board – the IMC opened its doors to students in Jalan Selangor, Petaling Jaya.

The college was officially launched on 13 April 1992 by the then Education Minister, YB Datuk Amar Dr Sulaiman Haji Daud, demonstrating the full support of the Malaysian Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.

Since 1993, there have been 32 cohorts of PMS students, totalling 2,519 in number. Today, IMU has 29 renowned PMS, which between them offer around 240 places a year to IMU in this exciting, innovative and transformational education model.

WHY IMU?

An established private medical & health sciences University, IMU is Malaysia’s first and most established private medical and health sciences university with 27 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education. IMU has SETARA-2017 rating of 6 stars (Outstanding) under the Mature University category.

A specialist university with 100% focus on medicine & health sciences

IMU is a university wholly specialising in medicine, health sciences and complementary medicine programmes which means that all resources are devoted to excellence in this area of education. Comprising of five schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, the IMU has something to offer everyone interested in pre-university, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous learning programmes in the field of healthcare.

Integrating education with research and healthcare practice

IMU is also pioneering the close integration of Research and Healthcare practice together with Education. Students get early exposure to research projects by interacting with the established IMU Institute for Research, Development & Innovation (IRDI) throughout their degree.

Over the years IMU has also established partnerships with leading hospitals in the country to allow its staff and students to get continuous and extensive real-life clinical experience. It also operates its own private clinics, IMU Healthcare, in areas such as Dentistry, Chiropractic and Chinese Medicine to ensure close integration of real practice with education.

Partner to the world’s prestigious universities

IMU pioneered the partner university model. It has established a strong global network of more than 29 partner institutions of higher learning. These collaborations cover most of the undergraduate programmes offered in IMU.

This reflects its historic commitment to opening doors to education and training opportunities outside Malaysia via credit transfer and twinning programmes, opportunities that would not otherwise be available to Malaysians. IMU’s diverse partner universities include universities from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America, Ireland, China and United Kingdom.

Renowned and highly experienced faculty

IMU’s lecturers are highly-qualified in their fields of expertise with extensive experience in not only academia (teaching, research and publications) but also in clinical/professional practice. Through exclusive arrangements with our Partner Universities, senior faculty members from those universities participate in yearly quality assurance reviews which ensures that IMU’s benchmarks global standards.

Some also come as visiting lecturers to teach specialised subjects on a rotational basis at IMU.

IMU learning philosophy produces competent & caring healthcare professionals.

IMU’s Learning Philosophy is grounded on its core values, which fosters students’ development into knowledgeable, competent and caring healthcare professionals who are critical thinkers, reflective and yet proactive. The IMU Cares programme provides ample opportunities for IMU students and staff to engage and serve the community.

Active involvement in the community allow students to translate knowledge gained in classrooms into health education to the public, enhance communication skills and strengthen professional and technical skills in real world environments. All this combines to create graduates who are committed to lifelong learning and imbued with a sense of good citizenship, leadership and ethical behaviour.

Graduate ‘employment ready’ with a professional network of peers

At IMU you will have relevant clinical exposure and / or industrial placements which better prepares you to become a healthcare professional, giving you an advantage in the employment market. In addition you will study alongside a diverse population of students and practitioners from all healthcare fields. This inter-professional learning allows you to appreciate how the different fields in healthcare practice relate and complement each other, which better prepares you for employment.

You will also have the chance to develop strong friendship amongst peers that will be the foundation of an extensive professional network upon graduation which will facilitate your career development.

A Medical University with Self-Accreditation Status

In 2017, IMU is the first and only private Malaysian medical university to receive the self-accreditation status from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). The self-accreditation status entitles a higher education provider (HEP) to accredit its programmes except for programmes that require accreditation and recognition of the relevant professional body. MQA awards the status to public universities and private campus branches based on the respective institution’s solid and reliable internal quality assurance system.
