马来西亚华商——钢铁大王钟廷森

钟廷森，祖籍广东汕头潮南区（潮阳），1944 年生于新加坡。
19 岁时缀学进入父亲钟水发的马来西亚公司工作。
1972 年，他前往印尼开设钢厂，1978 年接管父亲在马来西亚的业务，设立了当时马来西亚第一家较大的铸钢厂。为配合家族在新加坡业务的向外拓展，他将父亲创办的德兴制造公司、德昌制造公司及金狮金属制造公司合并，改名为金狮（私人）有限公司，他本人出任集团董事长，人称 “钢铁大王”。
除钢铁外金狮集团主要业务还有车辆、轮胎、电脑、造纸业、啤酒、零售及房地产等。
该集团是 1993 年开始在中国投资百货零售、车辆制造和酿酒业，是在中国投资最大的马来西亚企业，分别中国各地的百盛就是其业务之一，业务广布中国二十余个省、市、自治区，成效斐然。
2003 年7月，钟廷森当选马来西亚中华工商联合会总会长。他还兼任马来西亚国家经济发展委员会主席一职。

马来西亚金狮集团董事长钟廷森，集团所属有 320 家公司及关系企业，所控制的万嘉制钢私人有限公司与合营制钢有限公司，钢铁产量占马来西亚 60% 的份额，钟廷森也因此被称为“钢铁大王”。
金狮集团分别在新加坡和吉隆坡的股票交易所公开挂牌，目前钟氏家族控制了 13 家上市公司，遍及钢铁业、车辆、轮胎业、电脑业、百货、房地产、纸浆与纸张、种植业等，享誉东南亚.
钟廷森祖籍广东潮阳，1943 年生于新加坡，他从 10 岁开始学习做生意，“白天上学，下午在父亲公司学习，父亲手把手地教我。” 他的父亲钟水发上世纪 40 年代在新加坡开设了德昌制造厂，制造及出口狮标铁质家具、钢柜等，1956年把业务扩展至马来西亚，除家具外还从事橡胶产品制造和食品加工业。
1958年，父亲需要帮手，不到15岁的钟廷森就参与父亲的马来西亚公司工作。没有想到从此他就在马来西亚生根发展，从钢铁业做到轮胎，又做到汽车行业、百货行业等。
1971年，28 岁的钟廷森去印尼考察，发现当地人口多，又比较落后，很多行业尚处于空白，直觉告诉他这里有商机。经过考察，他想开一家生产铁质家具和办公用具的厂。创业之初，先后遇到印尼金融政策变化等重重困难，但他默默地努力工作，从设厂、融资到拓展分销网，无一不身体力行，业务逐渐走上正轨，并于第二年开始盈利，第三年就赚了 100 万马币。
1976年，他把在印尼赚的钱带回马来西亚，投资钢铁厂。
1978年，他投资 1200 万马币，成立了当时马来西亚第一家较大的钢铁厂——金狮合营制钢厂。第一年便达到 10 万吨产量，开业一年半后就盈利 1700 万马币。在他的有效管理下，产量亦飞速增长，第二年提高25%，第三年达到 15 万吨。 接着他又投资80吨电炉与连铸生产线，将废钢融化成钢水，铸成钢锭。1983 年又投资两条线材生产线，产量增至85万吨。钢铁厂逐渐壮大，现在产能达到500万吨，未来3年将达到 780 万吨，成为马来西亚钢铁行业翘楚，钟廷森也因此被称为“钢铁大王”。
父亲去世后，钟廷森接管了父亲在马来西亚的业务，他将父亲创办的德兴制造公司、德昌制造公司及金狮金属制造公司合并，改名为金狮（私人）有限公司，于 1981 年在吉隆坡上市。合营制钢厂则于 1982 年在吉隆坡上市。
在钢铁行业打下坚实基础后，钟廷森开始出击其它行业：
1981 年始，他进入房地产领域，目前其房地产公司是马来西亚五大房地产公司之一，每年有 3000 多个单位的房子出售；
1983 年进入种植业，种植可可和棕榈树等；
1985 年进入百货业，在百货业和房地产业，他投资达16亿马币，拥有马来西亚最大的百货公司；
1987 年进入汽车和摩托业；
1989 年进入轮胎、集装箱行业；
1993 年进入海绵铁行业；
1995 年进入纸浆业。
依靠自己的努力，他在马来西亚乃至东南亚构建了自己的事业版图。
进入上世纪 80 年代，金狮集团走向全盛时期，每年营业额平均增长率达到 34%。
该集团于1982年起分别在新加坡和吉隆坡的股票交易所公开挂牌。
到 1996 年，集团总资产、营业额均超过 100 亿马币（约合人民币 215 亿元），员工超过 4 万人，拥有上百家企业，除新加坡、马来西亚的企业外，其余分散在东南亚其他国家和美国、日本、台湾、香港等国家和地区，其中上市公司13家。在马来西亚上市的 7 家公司为金狮机构、合营制钢、合营货柜、金狮多元控股、金狮森林工业、金狮工业机构及银石机构。
2004年，整个集团的营业额为 182 亿马币（约合人民币392亿），税后净利 7 亿马币，员工 4 万 9 千人。
未来三年计划投资 51 亿马币，是马来西亚私人投资于制造业的最大企业。
钟廷森为中国人所熟悉是从百盛开始的。
1992年，他决定以北京为突破口，与中国工艺美术（集团）合作，在中国开设第一家店。
北京百盛自始至终本着 “尽如您意” 的服务宗旨，采用开放式的购物环境，鼓励售货员卖货，业绩和奖金直接挂钩，这样百盛的营业额是国营商场的5倍。百盛采用全国电脑联网，这样采购和资金调控亦能科学安排。在随后的几年内，广州、沈阳、青岛、济南、南京、重庆、成都、西安等地先后投资建起百盛百货店。目前百盛在中国有 40 多家店，生意最好的是北京，其次是上海。2005 年 11 月，百盛在香港上市。
从 1992 年在中国投资以来，金狮集团业绩扩展迅速，而且向多元化发展，迄今已投资 8 亿美元，主要在制造业，包括汽车及零部件、摩托车配件等，已涉足在中国的企业有长铃摩托、金城摩托、钱江摩托、江淮汽车、天津大发汽车、未来软件等，员工达 6 万人。
钟廷森说：“企业做大了，感觉责任很重大！”。
