Indoor plants are a decorative plus for any household, but they’re so much more than just a pretty, leafy piece used to pull a room together. Plants offer loads of health benefits, purify the air, and help de-stress with fresh, natural scents. Here are 6 houseplants that will add to the comfort and calm of your home.

Aloe Plant
This is a popular one, not only because of well-known health benefits but also of how easy it is to care for since they don’t need much water. Crack open the hard, smooth leaves to reveal a cool gel that works wonders on irritated skin, cuts and burns. The almighty aloe is also a superstar when it comes to purifying the air in your home and monitoring for harmful chemicals from cleaning products. When the air becomes too toxic, the leaves will begin to show brown spots–a perfect indicator to keep air in check!

Snake Plant
If you are looking for an extra breath of fresh air in your home, the snake plant is the ultimate go-to. They don’t need much light or water, making them perfect for brightening up a dim corner. What’s special about the snake plant is that it absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen through the night (most plants only do this during the day time) so it works overtime cleaning the air for a healthier living environment.

Spider Plant
A breeze to care for and with a reputation as an air purifying beast, it’s no wonder the spider plant has been one of the most popular house plants for years. It made the NASA list of best air-purifying plants because of its ability to clear out toxic pollutants such as benzene, formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and xylene.

Citrus Plants
Stick a small lemon, orange or grapefruit bush in a bright spot of your home and enjoy the fresh, invigorating scents of citrus year round. It may come as a surprise, but these plants are quite easy to grow with plentiful light and will even produce fruit if cared for properly. Citrus must be watered regularly and fertilized through summer and spring for best results.

Rosemary
Delightfully fragrant, a cinch to care for and the perfect cooking companion makes the rosemary plant an all-star houseplant. Keep it in the kitchen by a window and water 1-2 times a week and watch it grow rather quickly. The piney smell of this herb is intoxicating. Pluck some fresh rosemary sprigs and add them to your cooking to enhance the flavors of food  in a whole new way.

Also great for cooking, especially Italian food, the basil plant promotes heart health, boosts the immune system and works wonder for healthy looking skin. This green leafy herb is quite pungent, emitting a distinct yet delicious scent that will invigorate the senses as well as your home.
