She may be an avid campaigner for equal rights, but Madonna has upset fans by using “gay” as an insult. Not just any insult – she was dissing kale, which is a superfood. You don’t diss superfoods. The superstar , 55, was taking part in a word association game where she labelled Hillary Clinton “angry” and the Crocs shoe as “effective”. The Crocs thing is offensive enough but when presented with the leafy vegetable, she hit out at kale as being “gay”. Fans raged, with one commenting on Buzzfeed’s article: “Saying kale is ‘gay’ is meant to convey that she doesn’t like it, so it is an insult. I am SO TIRED of people using ‘gay’ in a negative context.” Another added: “Madonna is as culturally sensitive as a bull in a china shop. Really. She puts her foot in her mouth constantly.” In January, Madge was forced to apologise after she used the term “n***er” in a caption accompanying a photo of her son, Rocco, on Instagram. She said: “I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram. It was not meant as a racial slur ... I am not a racist.” In yesterday’s piece, the singer also labelled Russian president Vladimir Putin, 61, as “gay”, but that is probably more to do with his anti-gay policies. But kale isn’t the only veg she has got a beef with – as it were – as avocados get some stick, too. The Queen of Pop describes guacamole as “gross germs”, which 3am can only interpret as Madge demonstrating a disgust for communal dipping. Though the tiny amount of germs that are spread in such activities are hardly “gross”. To other kale haters, you should probably know that a cup of the green stuff has more vitamin C than an orange, and is full of calcium and vitamin A. So there. Mirror
