2014 Detroit Auto Show: Nissan Sports Sedan Concept brings it all...and a floating roof!

The Nissan Sports Sedan Concept that was unveiled Monday at the 2014 North American International Auto Show is a strong prediction of what is to come in NIssan's near future, perhaps even the next-generaiton Nissan Maxima. The key design feature? The Sports Sedan's floating roof adds an air of lightness and speed to the concept while thin pillars give the vehicle's interior a roomier feel.

The Nissan Sports Sedan Concept joins the Nissan Resonance and the Nissan Friend-ME as a strong forecast of future product. 

Nissan unveiled the third in its series of design concepts here in Detroit. The first, the Nissan Resonance, signaled the direction of upcoming mid-size crossovers. Next was the aggressive Friend-ME coupe-like sedan, which was showcased at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2013.

The Nissan Sports Sedan Concept that debuted in Detroit on January 13 at the North American International Auto Show is a prediction of what is to come in Nissan’s future large sedans. The concept, says Nissan, applies sports car performance standards and a new design philosophy to a 4-door sedan.

Don’t be surprised if the next Maxima looks a lot like this design concept, though Nissan did not confirm that.

Dramatic lines on the Sports Sedan Concept are especially striking.

The “V- motion” sweep on the grille floats up to the hood, to emphasize power and motion.  This bold design element supports the marque and it will be part of the future of Nissan’s identity. The boomerang-shape lighting signature accentuates the rear design of each vehicle. 

The most striking element of the Sedan Concept, other than the very dramatic lines, is the innovative floating roof. It really does appear to be floating above the body of the car, adding a sense of lightness and speed to the concept. Thin pillars open the greenhouse and lighten the vehicle's interior.

The concept is wide, low to the ground and muscular. It’s short front and rear overhangs, reduced ground clearances, small gaps between wheels and fenders give the concept a sporty, athletic stance (as opposed to an overly aggressive look).

The concept promises a connected, high-tech environment for all passengers and high contrast interior colors and materials.
