A Michigan elementary school teacher’s future is in jeopardy after footage surfaced of her not helping but filming an 11-year-old autistic boy trying to get his head out of a classroom chair last November. According to local news station WNEM, the footage was taken in a fifth grade classroom at Oaktree Elementary in Goodrich. Officials say teacher Nicole Mcvey recorded the boy’s struggle on her cell phone while the rest of the class stood by. Mcvey is heard asking the boy if he wants to get tasered before the principal comes in, who tells her the situation is not an emergency. The principal resigned shortly after the video went public. The board voted to fire the tenured Mcvey last year, but parents actually voiced support for her at a school board meeting last Monday. Mcvey is currently on paid administrative leave, but private tenure hearings will decide her future. Goodrich Superintendent Scott Bogner sent WNEM this statement: “Under Michigan’s tenure law, that teacher has a right to a private hearing of any charges against her. The district is obligated to respect that right and will not discuss specifics of this case.”
