A woman who found an unopened ‘love letter’ from the Second World War era has vowed to return it to its rightful owner.

Sheila Polk, from Dallas in Texas, discovered the letter inside the pages of a book she bought from a charity shop in Plant City, Florida.

Addressed to a Helen Rothurmel – a member of the African American WACS unit stationed at Love Field, Dallas – the letter was sent in 1945 by a Sergeant Albert Alm, who was based at Palm Springs, California.

Ms Polk believes the note could be a love letter, but this is difficult to prove since she has vowed not to open the sealed envelope until she finds the intended recipient.

Another potential hurdle is that Helen Rothurmel may no longer be alive. However, Ms Polk is determined to return it.

She told Fox News: ‘Her life could have been changed from this one letter. You know, it is a personal sentimental thing.

‘They do movies about lost love, and I’m thinking who knows what is in here that she has never seen? Who knows? I would love for her to get it.’

The post office apparently attempted to deliver the letter on three occasions but it never reached Ms Rothurmel. It is hoped military officials might be able to help trace her.
