 A husband whispered ‘I won’t be long behind you’ over his wife’s body before taking a lethal overdose, an inquest heard. Adrian Cross, whose wife, Tammy, had been battling a heart condition, was found wrapped in her pink dressing gown and clutching her photograph. The 45-year-old consumed a cocktail of painkillers and antidepressants just hours after he identified her body, the hearing was told. His aunt, Yvonne Thornley, described how she went to the hospital and saw Mr Cross him leaning over his wife. ‘He said, “I’ll see you later, Tam”,’ she told the court. ‘I thought he meant he was going back up to the hospital – but obviously he didn’t.’ Mrs Cross had endured severe pain and breathing difficulties for years because of scarring to her heart, the inquest heard. The 37-year-old, who married Mr Cross in 1999, lost weight and suffered constant vomiting in the months before her death. She was taken to hospital after having a fit in bed but died in October last year. Her sister, Dawn Jones, described how she saw Mr Cross, from Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, at the hospital and he said: ‘You know the score, Dawn.’ She added: ‘That meant he was going but none of us thought he would do it then. He always said, “If anything happens, I’ll be straight behind her”.’ A toxicology report showed high levels of the pain medication oxycodone and the antidepressant sertraline in Mrs Cross’s system which, coupled together, caused her death. Her father, David Allan Jones, said she may have taken more tablets than prescribed because she kept vomiting. Aberdare coroner Andrew Barkley recorded a verdict of suicide for Mr Cross and a narrative verdict for his wife. Metro
