Three men charged over church arson (Update 2)By M. MAGESWARI

KUALA LUMPUR: Three despatch riders, including two brothers, claimed trial at a Sessions Court here to burning the Metro Tabernacle Church AG early this month.
They are siblings Raja Muhammad Faizal Raja Ibrahim, 24 and Raja Muhammad Idzham Raja Ibrahim, 22, and their friend Azuwan Shah Ahmad, 23.
They were accused of committing mischief with fire of the church in Desa Melawati, Wangsa Maju with intention to destroy it at 11.50pm on Jan 7.
The trio were said to have committed the offence with several people who are still at large.
Upon hearing the charge on Friday, the handcuffed trio appeared gloomy.
If convicted, they could be jailed for up to 20 years and fined under Section 436 of the Penal Code.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Anselm Charles Fernandis asked the court to set their bail at RM20,000 in one surety, saying that it was in view of the gravity of the offence and public interest.
However, the three friends pleaded for lower bail saying that they came from a poor family and could not raise a higher bail.
The three friends asked the court to consider that they were first offenders.
However, the prosecutor pressed that the bail was reasonable due to their actions.
Upon hearing this, Sessions Court judge S.M. Komathy Suppiah asked the prosecutor about the type of evidence available for the case.
DPP Anselm said there are direct and circumstantial evidence against the trio.
Komathy set the bail at RM20,000 in one surety for each accused. However, she said she would allow each accused to post RM10,000 as security for their release pending disposal of the case.
The trio then expressed their intention to engage a lawyer for the trial and asked for an extension of time to handle legal matters.
Idzham applied for the judge’s leniency to give them two months to appoint a lawyer, saying that they have not met their family members for some time.
However, DPP Anselm asked the court to give a month for the preparation.
Komathy set March 12 for mention.
The media reported earlier that the police arrested eight men involved in the arson attack on the church to assist in the investigation of the case.
The church was one of a few Christian places of worship attacked since early January. It was set on fire and the ground floor was completely gutted.
The attacks were believed to be linked to the High Court ruling on Dec 31 last year to allow the use of the word “Allah” in the Catholic weekly Herald.
