SUBANG JAYA, Aug 11 – "Sudah jadi... sudah jadilah (“What can I do… what has happened has happened).
That's the first inkling of the reasons behind Selangor MB Datuk Seri Abu Hassan Omar’s resignation.
He was reported to have told his deputy, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad, around midnight of August 10, when news broke that the Selangor MB has resigned.
Subsequently, the turn of events happened at rapid-fire pace.
Yet, Dr M did it again in upholding the integrity of UMNO and the government.
The Prime Minister had wasted no time in accepting ‘Mr Clean’ Abu Hassan’s resignation.
That fired intense discussion on the reasons behind Abu Hassan’s resignation.
Abu Hassan said he decided to quit “to look after my health and also need to spend time with my wife, children, grandchildren and family members”.
The Prime Minister said Abu Hassan resigned “due to personal reasons”.
The headline of a front-page comment by New Straits Times Group Editor Ahmad A. Talib screamed: “Tongues wag but Abu Hassan has done the right thing”.
Talib said while “his decision must be respected, the reasons must have been overwhelming and very compelling for Dr Mahathir to have accepted the resignation immediately”.
“Attempts by Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen from Selangor also failed to convince Dr Mahathir to reconsider his decision.”
“It does seem that Abu Hassan’s “personal” reasons were simply too strong, too compelling,” he wrote.
Prior to his resignation, rumours had begun circulating over a month ago of Abu Hassan, 60, allegedly being involved in a sex scandal, according to a News Straits Times report.
A July 7 article published in Jawa Pos, a vernacular Indonesian tabloid based in Surabaya, especially fuelled the rumours.

In the article titled “Menteri Besar Selangor Bantah Skandal Seks”, Jawa Pos said two men who claimed themselves as UMNO activists, went to its Surabaya office to disclose Abu Hassan’s alleged sex scandal.
The two men, whose identities were not disclosed, told the Indonesian tabloid: “We have come from afar to reveal the shameful sex scandal of our Minister. As a leader of the ummah, his actions were inappropriate.”
The two men handed over a few documents to Jawa Pos saying that those were the results of almost five years of investigation.
Similar documents were said to have been circulated during the recent UMNO election, among the UMNO grassroots and even senior state government officers.
While waiting for the replacement to be announced by the Prime Minister, it is interesting to note that New Straits Times, a paper regarded as UMNO’s mouth piece, has taken a no-nonsense stance.
Its group editor Ahmad A. Talib reminded in his front-page comment that two other former chief executives from Selangor left their office in somewhat questionable manner.
He was referring to Datuk Harun Idris (1964 to 1976) and Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib (1986 – 1997).
He declared in strong words: “Are there anymore skeletons falling out of the political cupboard? Or have we seen the last of them?”
“To help make the selection easier, or credible, perhaps those in the position to be considered should raise their hands and own up if they have any skeleton hidden somewhere. For the sake of King and country, and the future of the nation’s children, they better state their liabilities now, before someone somewhere exposes them.”
