Al Ahly of Egypt won a record sixth African Champions League crown on Sunday with a 4-2 aggregate victory over Coton Sport, despite drawing 2-2 in the return leg...
Ahly won the first leg final 2-0 in Cairo before managing a last-gasp draw in Cameroon.
The Red Devils from Cairo are now the most successful team in Africa's foremost club competition as they have also won the trophy in 1982, 1987, 2001, 2005 and 2006.
City rivals Zamalek have won the tournament five times.
In the first 45 minutes, home team Coton Sport, who played Oumara Sanda in place of suspended Ahmadou Ngomna, had begun in excellent fashion in front of a packed 35,000-strong crowd that had braved the heat wave in the Northern Cameroonian town of Garoua.
Ahly soaked the early pressure and when they took control of the ball, they tried to keep possession so as to take the fight out of their desparate opponents.
Goalkeeper Abdel Hamid produced a spectacular save in the 20th minute when a rocket of a shot let fly by Karim Lassina from 30 yards was bound for goal. And 12 minutes later, Baba failed to connect home a corner on 32 minutes with the Ahly goal at his mercy.
Against the run of play Ahmed Hassan scored off a cross from Mohamed Aboutrika with a deft flick inside the box on 38 minutes for the opening goal of this return leg final.
Abdoul Karim Lassina drew level for the "greens and whites" with a left footed shot during a goalmouth scramble in first half injury time.
In the second half, impressive Ahly goalkeeper Abdel Hamid denied Coton Sport when he scrambled to safety a Kamilou Daouda shot on 54 minutes. Moments later Baba failed to direct his shot on target when put through by the enterprising Daouda. on the hour mark the Niger striker's header missed target by inches.
Later Ousmaila Baba put the home team in front in the 62nd minute when he nodded home from six yards, giving Coton Sport a fighting chance at victory.
Baba missed several glorious chances including one in the 87th minute before skipper Shady Mohamed converted a penalty in the dying moments of this final after Ndam Ndam committed a foul in the box. Two goals to the good with mere seconds to go, Ahly had done it.
Besides winning the cash prize of a million US dollars, Ahly will also represent Africa at the FIFA World Club Cup in Japan in December.
They placed third at the tournament two years ago. |
