Malaysia Warships For IMDEX Asia 2007

SINGAPORE, May 7 (Bernama) -- Two Royal Malaysian Navy warships will berth at the Changi Naval Base here next week for the International Maritime Defence Exhibition Asia 2007 (IMDEX Asia 2007).

The KD Pahang and KD Laksamana Tan Pusmah will be here alongside some 20 other warships from 14 countries participating in the international maritime defence show serving the Asia-Pacific region.

Singapore will be represented by RSS Formidable, the republic's very latest Lafayette class frigate, and RSS Persistence.

The 3,200-tonne, 144-metre long RSS Formidable, commissioned on Saturday, is regarded as the Singapore navy's most powerful warship. It is the first of six stealth frigates to officially enter service.

Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean said at the commissioning of the ship that the modern sensors and weapons on the frigates would provide surveillance and combat capabilities over a wide area, including a zone of influence in the air that spans hundreds of kilometres.

The other five frigates will be commissioned over the next two years.

IMDEX Asia 2007 organiser said that this year's show, the sixth in the series, would see the biggest participation of warships totalling 22 vessels altogether.

Previous IMDEX Asia events have seen the presence of between 12 and 18 warships.

Besides Singapore, other countries sending their warships are Australia, Bangladesh, China, France, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"The presence of the large number of warships is an integral part of the show and a reflection of Singapore's excellent relations with international navies and their respective countries," the organiser said.

More than 135 exhibitors from 21 countries will showcase the latest in naval equipment and cutting edge technologies at the event on May 15-18 which is expected to attract some 7,000 trade visitors.

Among the international companies which have confirmed their participation are Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, EADS, BAE Systems, Navantia, Thyssenkrupp, Thales, DCNS, Saab, MBDA, L3 Communications, Agusta Westland and Singapore Technologies.
